Is It Okay For Vegetarians To Kill Spiders?

I am a veggie and my mother says that I should not squash/kill or hoover up spiders.

Thing is I'm scared of spiders and everytime I see them I have to get rid (kill) them. I can't get rid of them without killing them because I'm scared that they'll crawl all over me. The same goes for other insects/bugs like flies and wasps. I always get a rolled up newspaper and splatter them.

Also, as a veggie, apparently I'm not supposed to joke about shooting birds (even though I would never actually do it because I love animals (apart from bugs/insects)) and come out with expressions like 'like lambs to the slaughter'.

Do any other vegetarians do/say anti-vegetarian things?

Sure it is, but spiders are pretty cool. I let them be, even if they're in the house. And it's sure as shit ok to squash these motherf***ers on sight:

Only if it's about to devour you.

I never kill them but that's just a personal policy.

I always trap them in a glass and throw them out alive into the air.
Wasps, however, I murder. Bees ditto. Although, there is a world bee crisis, so I may stop.

Bees are alright. A non killing policy is always best.

Wasps are just BASTARDS!

I hardly ever see any spiders, but whenever I come across one, I grab it with a paper towel then flush it down the toilet .. same with any other insect I don't like

don't like messes :thumb:

That's not my arm by the way.

YES, PLEASE. PLEASE.
I will anyway everytime I have the guts, so just say it's right.

Vegetarian, not sadistic. I can't share a world with them, I'm sorry.

Ooh, I bet my younger son would love one of those as a pet!

But what's with all the spider-killing, people? We're not talking about poisonous species here. Leave the harmless little spideys alone!

Kate *who spring-cleans around spiders' nests if the baby spiders haven't yet hatched out and skittered away to safety*

I don't mind spiders. I like spiders. Things like Centipedes and insects that jump and move quickly I'm uneasy about.

hahaha, been argueing about this at work today,
i have a severe spider phobia, so I usually have to kill them, i just can't do the collecting in a cup and chucking outside thing, (believe me ive tried!!) i cant cope with them at all, ive been know to have all the furniture out and the carpet up if ive seen a spider and its got away, because i wont sleep in that room until i KNOW exactly where it is, (and dispatch it to spider heaven or get someone else to chuck it outside).

I know its not nice, i dont really WANT to do it, and i dont agree with killing things at all with 3 exceptions...
(in this order)

humans
wasps
spiders.

:blushing:

Re: hmmmmm

Plenty of new members can read some of the hilarious threads which they missed.

Well I've never knowingly killed anything. Spiders are escorted off the premises with paper and a glass and flies are usually a tasty snack for one of my dogs which is beyond my control. I've accidentally ran over frogs and toads but went home and did three hail Mary's as penance and wore a hair shirt for a few nights.

Maybe they want to discuss, not just read. Nothing wrong with that.

I have a zero tolerance policy against all insects that enter my house. Sorry guys, you'd better stay outside!

oh and you should NEVER kill bees, bees are ace, and they dont sting unless really cornered. :)

What's a hair shirt?

Okay, but how can you decide who is who? I mean, when I'm panicking, I hardly have time to get them introduce themselves.

Re: hmmmmm

I try not to kill spiders, ive got a spider catcher, its got a longish handle so you dont have to get too close, and a sliding door type thing that enables you to trap the spider, and then throw it out side.... however, if spider is more than 4 inches wide, inc legs, its not big enough so some times i just have to get the dog in to deal with spider!! Why do dogs eat them??? rank! mr mozfish is worse, wont go anywhere near them!! big pussy!!! xx
