As Morrissey has yet to release a true solo career compilation, whether it be a "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits", that I'm completely pleased with, I've been working on my own personal "Ultimate Hits" mix (as is my want!). I am having a tough time narrowing down the last handful and I would love your input. As he has so many singles and popular songs (at least amongst his fans), I've been creating a 2-part compilation, 21 tracks each, or "2-disc set" for people like me who still think in those terms. ;) It's a "hits" compilation, not necessarily a "best of", although the lines of that are obviously quite blurry. If you vote, though, think in terms of popularity; what do you consider Morrissey's biggest singles and most popular songs, not just amongst the masses, but really, according to his true, obsessive fans?

Another way to look at it, if Morrissey created this poll and said he was coming out with an "Ultimate Hits" collection and you, the fans, got to decide the final few tracks, which THREE would you vote for out of these remaining choices?

(If you don't see a song you think is deserving, consider it already on the compilation.)

Thanks for playing along! :thumb:

(And please choose only 3.)

well dude, I see that me and a certain someone voted for 2 of the 3 same songs, which is either a pretty good endorsement for them :thumb:
or just the opposite

That's awesome! I do loves me some lists:)

Question, though: is that TOP 50 a list of what fans considered their "favorite" Morrissey songs, his "best" songs, or, more what I'm going for, which is sort of a combination of the two, his most popular (the "hits")?

(And, thanks for voting, those who have!)

The background to the poll was that each song was voted on separately and given a score our of 10. The scores were averaged out to give an overall rating e.g. 8.97 for More You Ignore Me. People didn't individually provide top 50 (or whatever) lists.
If you're looking at popularity, presumably you mean sales wise, and that would obviously only apply to the singles. The sales are pretty distorted as they are heavily influenced by how hyped and popular Morrissey is at any given moment. This explains why one of his most uninspired songs ever (You Have Killed Me) achieved the joint highest chart position (3 - beating all Smiths songs) coz it came off the back of the post-Quarry hype.

Thanks for the clarification!

Yeah, the singles are what make coming up with a "hits" collection so difficult for Morrissey. One, he has so many of them, and two, many of his actual most popular songs (if you were to ask his biggest fans) weren't singles (Speedway, Trouble Loves Me, Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself, etc). So, I'm sort of looking for a realistic combination of the two. Polls like this and the ranking one you're referencing help give a good perspective. When I, as objectively as possible, combine that with his biggest sellers and most popular "main-stream" songs, I should have a pretty nice compilation that (I think) most fans would be happy with.

Thank you, everyone who has voted so far! The results are really interesting to me. AND, it's super close, so if anyone else wants to throw their three vote opinion into the poll, I would give you my heart (that's if I had one).
