greatest moz/smiths lyric of all time

my favourite smiths lyric would have to be

I was minding my business
Lifting some lead off
The roof of the Holy Name church
It was worthwhile living a laughable life
To set my eyes on the blistering sight
Of a vicar in a tutu
He's not strange
He just wants to live his life this way

not that it's the best but i like it -

two lumps please, you're the bees knees, but so am i

tremendous!

For me it has to be:

Well I wonder
Do you hear me when you sleep ?
I hoarsely cry
Well I wonder
Do you see me when we pass ?
I half die ...
Please keep me in mind
Please keep me in mind

I just gave it a play to double check and I'm thoroughly distraught as expected!
Defo the one for me. Great thread:)

"Leather Elbows On A Tweed Coat Is That The Best You Can Do"

I always tried my best, but that was the only line (well not only...) I really couldn't understand! (and maybe it's because I'm not British or something? )

Don't forget about the tough kid who sometimes swallows nails!!

Also, then on the sand, another man he takes her hand, a smile lights up her stupid face and well it would. CLASS!

Some that havent been mentioned so far...

"It's so easy to laugh/It's so easy to hate/It takes guts to be gentle and kind"

"If you're so funny, then why you on your own tonight? If you're so clever..." etc.

"You say that the day just never arrives/but it's never seemed so far away"

"You are depressed but you're remarkably dressed, that's all you need"

"Take me out tonight/take me anywhere/I dont care/I dont care/I dont care"

"Your prejudice wont keep you warm tonight"

"Jeane/Im not sure what happiness means/but I look in your eyes and I know/that it isnt there"

"And if I seem a little strange/then that's because I am" :D

"Nature is a language/cant you read?" :)

and if a double decker bus.................

This one gets my vote as best lyric of all. Best song too!

don't forget the songs that made you cry
and the songs that saved your life
yes, you're older now, and you're a clever swine
but they were the only ones who ever stood by you

All of the others listed so far have been great, but here's one of my favorites:

Oh, you look so tired
Mouth, slack and wide.
Ill-housed and ill-advised,
Your face is as mean as your life been.
Crash into my arms,
I want you.
You don't agree?
But you don't refuse.
I know you.

Morrissey is the only singer I know of who can sing the very simple line "I know you" and still demonstrate to me, the listener, the familiarity the singer has with whomever he's singing to. It's brilliant.

I couldnt agree more.I all into that song too.
Also, I REALLY like He knows i"d love to se him very much

"He knows, he knows
He knows I'd love
To see him happy
(Or as close as possible)
As close as possible
As close as possible
As close as is allowed

"You're just another person in the world
You're just another fool with radical views
You're just another who has maddening views
You want to turn it on its head
By staying in bed !"
I said : "I know I do"
He doesn't know ...

He Knows I'd Love To See Him is one of my favorites! As is Glamorous Glue, by the way. (I was thinking about posting 'I used to dream and I used to vow')

i used to dream
and i used to vow
i wouldnt dream of it now

i also like "rejection is 1 thing , but rejection from a fool is cruel"

"And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure - the privilege is mine"

When I heard it, well, I knew the idea of love I'd had since I was very young wasn't so far-fetched

And when I'm lying in my bed
I think about life
And I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me

I go for this lyric from Nowhere Fast its Morrissey at his witty best i say.
