Goodbye Cork City FC

Members of the consortium that had agreed to take over Cork City have expressed their disappointment that the club was refused a Premier Division licence last night. With no licence forthcoming, Cork City Investment FC Limited will be wound up at 2pm today.

The group, comprising local businessmen and the supporters group FORAS, had hoped to save Cork City after agreeing a deal with owner Tom Coughlan yesterday afternoon.

However, as that deal was contingent on Cork being granted a Premier Division licence it collapsed in the wake of last night’s decision of FAI’s Licensing Committee to “unanimously” reject the Leesider’s application.

As a result, the High Court will wind up Cork City Investment FC Limited at 2pm this afternoon. Justice Mary Laffoy yesterday postponed that winding-up order by 24 hours to allow the new owners settle a €160,000 tax bill with the Revenue Commissioners.

As the deal has now fallen through, that debt will not be paid. In all, the new group had been willing to pay €600,000 to cover existing liabilities.

A spokesperson for the prospective owners said last night: “With the decision of the Licensing Committee not to grant a Premier League licence, we’re unable to proceed with our bid.

“Unfortunately, this means that the club will be wound up, with devastating consequences for staff, players and creditors.

“This is a sad day for us, the FAI and Cork City, as we are now left without top-flight soccer in the country’s second city.”

Explaining their decision, the FAI’s Licensing Committee said: “Having carefully considered the application and all of the documentation submitted it was the view of the committee that the club fell seriously short of the criteria required to fulfil a Premier Division Licence in a number of areas."

The committee did, however, grant the supporters group FORAS group a First Division Licence for the new season, seemingly paving the way for a new Cork club to ply their trade in the lower tier.

“The committee also considered the application from Friends of the Rebel Army Society (FORAS) and agreed to grant a First Division Licence for the 2010 season,” a statement added.

Bray Wanderers, relegated last season, will now fill the vacancy left by Cork’s omission from the top flight while Dundalk will almost certainly get to play in the Europa League qualifying rounds later this summer.

It's sad to see any club wound up.... the fans are always left with nothing to hold..... the history, tradition, community asset etc all gone......
Maybe the fans can set up the club starting at the bottom of the non league rung as has happened in England?

Cork City today.....Pompey next week??:squiffy:

Who will you support now John? You could pick a ''BIG'' Premier League club over here and join the bandwagon:thumb::lbf:
