Geoff Travis on the Morrissey of today

Rough around the edges: Former Smiths record label manager talks about his latest batch of Irish acts

"The first question you must of course ask Geoff Travis is what he thinks of Morrissey’s ongoing descent into far-right notoriety. Back in 1980s Travis discovered The Smiths and, with his record label Rough Trade, helped propel Moz toward gladioli-flourishing immortality. How long ago that must seem — how bittersweet the memories.

“Not bitter, no,” says Travis. “It was one of those periods that went by in a flash. Morrissey wasn’t the person he now seems to be. He was an interesting character to be around. As a band, The Smiths were an unstoppable force. A lot of years have gone by. I don’t think I’d recognise the Morrissey of today. It’s sad what he’s become, in terms of his views.”"

A brief Morrissey segue in to the article's title.

The list is endless & mostly unproven since he's always saying contradictory things but in general, it's that he supports Brexit, Anne Marie Waters & For Britain (Far Right, but he has said he thinks she's unifying the left & the right), Israel (he doesn't) & Harvey Weinstein & Kevin Spacey (he just speculated) & he's against Halal slaughter & open borders.

He also seems to believe that crimes committed by Muslims are covered up by Western governments (they have been a little bit) & he recommended Douglas Murray, who believes that Saudi backed Islamic ultra-conservatives are taking over Europe aided by West-hating Marxists. Which is mad, but it's published by Bloomsbury, so I'd blame them rather than Morrissey.

but he does support Israel. No?

I recall that Larry King interview when he was asked about it. The way he responded was so strange.

He probably doesn't want to talk about his health but knows he looks ill, so needs to give an explanation. Just like he was trying to explain why his life was so weird, but Larry didn't think it was (he's probably normal for L.A.).

Didn't is correct as the man was never a socialist. His criticism of Maggie made you and others believe he was.

I would imagine he would prefer the epithet of being 'anti-establishment' - he was back then and he remains so now.

17. Are you a socialist?

I am. I don’t belong to any particular party but if I were to be stripped down, as it were, I would be shoved in the socialist box. Why? Just the very obvious things of coming from a working-class background, being exposed to hardships and the reality of life. I think all socialists are absolute realists.

some swooning on his part. Then you have his bit about the need of the world to be blown up
by a talking Comet, which doesnt exist btw, as Comets cant communicate with people.:hammer:

That's probably still true. I think he's just become confused by modern politics because so many ideas & alliances appear to have shifted. The world made no sense to me at all between 2014 & 2017. You need to factor in the internet, the changing global power balance & the crash. All massive changes from what I was taught to expect & I'm half his age.

"Confused" is not strong enough a word. He now claims the Nazis were Leftists. Someone has gotten to him. :(

That's actually not as weird as it sounds - he's been reading a book called Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg, which argues that progressive politics has a totalitarian streak that's akin to fascism & fascism itself was communism with National tradition left in. Which isn't a bad theory.

But he has fallen into the whole neo-con alt-right world & I think it's probably traceable to the fallout from Charlie Hebdo. A horrifying amount of people on the liberal-left were arguing that the magazine had provoked the attack & shouldn't have published. Which was the first time our side was seriously on the side of state censorship & what would be essentially Blasphemy laws. I didn't like the cartoons, but being executed for them is a million times worse.

I have never read one single line of poetry. I could be really beautiful. (It's actually quiet nasty to try to hurt someone in this regard, when you're real agenda is a better record deal.) Geoff, by the way, is a very important person. Without him, my musical taste would have looked very different and far less adventurous. A key figure. Show him some respect.

Skinny, it was called the National SOCIALIST WORKERS Party.

The Nazi Party was 100% anti-Marxist. Look no further than Hitler's rise to power. How he siphoned the Conservative vote in Germany and seized control (Machtergreifung) as soon as he saw the opportunity. If you refute this, you can go straight to hell.
