Geoff Travis on the Morrissey of today

Rough around the edges: Former Smiths record label manager talks about his latest batch of Irish acts

"The first question you must of course ask Geoff Travis is what he thinks of Morrissey’s ongoing descent into far-right notoriety. Back in 1980s Travis discovered The Smiths and, with his record label Rough Trade, helped propel Moz toward gladioli-flourishing immortality. How long ago that must seem — how bittersweet the memories.

“Not bitter, no,” says Travis. “It was one of those periods that went by in a flash. Morrissey wasn’t the person he now seems to be. He was an interesting character to be around. As a band, The Smiths were an unstoppable force. A lot of years have gone by. I don’t think I’d recognise the Morrissey of today. It’s sad what he’s become, in terms of his views.”"

A brief Morrissey segue in to the article's title.

Absolutely, plenty of what Morrissey says is eye rolling. Sometimes I feel like someone sitting down with him in the right manner could probably either change his mind on things, or, tease out a lot of the things he believes aren't as bad as he makes them seem .. but he loves sweeping statements and generalisations and sometimes you sit there thinking "god I know what you actually mean, but when you put it like that...". But most people don't look at it on a more critical level. It's black and white, he said this one thing in this one interview so we need 73 articles all feeding off each other calling him the devil, when only maybe 4 of those 73 authors actually read what they're talking about from the source, the rest just read from each other.

Then of course you have some of the people here, who couldn't care less about what he is actually saying, it's just a chance to put the boot in. He could be talking about the dangers of global warming and the benefits of medicare for all and he'd be a dangerous leftie socialist nut job to them, because it isn't about the issues - it's about him.

And in the end, people may ask why I continue to like him if I don't agree with a lot of his stated views - it's because I don't invest that much emotionally in him. I invest in his music and songs and that's about it. So really, half the people here who are clinically obsessed with hating him are absolutely shocking at controlling their own emotions. They have far bigger issues to worry about than what some dude with a good voice thinks.

Well said. If only we had more rational people like yourself posting here.

I don't think he's physically or mentally well. He looks agitated & in pain. But he doesn't have anything else in his life apart from cats & songs, so on he goes.

Must be that terrible cancer.

Time to get the scraper out

this is a guy who gave M a packet of biscuits because the smiths reached a high chart position, cheap bastard, other companies were giving their stars rolls royces in those days, no wonder M tore him apart in autobiog.Ms an easy target these days so expect many more of these articles.
One can only try to ponder the biscuit situation, were they custards creams, or bourbon!!!! Wonder what moz dine with them?

I don’t worship the ground Moz walks on, sometimes I adore him especially his lyrics and sometimes I think..daft sod but FAR right, Hardly. I’ve been unfortunate enough to come across people who are far far right and they hardly compare to comments Moz has made, I think give the guy a break a bit now. Don’t like him fine but stop moaning and moaning on!

I see you’re getting the same troll rating on every single post from Trill, just like I am. It doesn’t matter what I post - it could be me saying how much I like It’s Over, for example - you can guarantee I get the obligatory troll rating. It’s truly pathetic & pointless.

I put Trill on ignore a while back so I don’t even get notified that he’s trolling me.

I feel sorry for him. He’s clearly got issues.

Funny thing is, this is the ONLY post of mine that Trill hasn’t given a troll rating to.

Well said. If only we had more rational people like yourself posting here.

But he did give this post a troll rating immediately after.

Good to see he’s mostly consistently a predictable bore.

I've just discovered ignore. It has reached a point where it's worryingly obsessive & odd for someone who thinks people should be nice. At least I'm not alone.

Fry's been cancelled many times, but always bounces back because he's more socially connected than Morrissey is. But the cancellation process is brutal & usually far nastier than the offense the person is being cancelled for.

Skinny please get work. Stop making up PC terminology there is no such thing as cancellation process. Dont be thick.

Moz just had two sold out tours. In a row.
The ingrate Johnny Le Pew, meanwhile, took a beating in the box office. Word on the street is that his future legacy will be that no one will book him for fear of going bankrupt.
He's done unfortunately.

‘Don't talk to me about people who are nice, 'cause I've spent my whole life in ruins over people who are nice.’

this mediocre and hapless cuck should contact the hospital for :handpointright::guardsman::handpointleft: to give him
some bald head advice.:swear

And now Skinny is acting all Jewish. Peeps are the Mosque must be having a laugh.:drama:

What are these controversial views exactly? Are we allowed to ask?

The list is endless & mostly unproven since he's always saying contradictory things but in general, it's that he supports Brexit, Anne Marie Waters & For Britain (Far Right, but he has said he thinks she's unifying the left & the right), Israel (he doesn't) & Harvey Weinstein & Kevin Spacey (he just speculated) & he's against Halal slaughter & open borders.

He also seems to believe that crimes committed by Muslims are covered up by Western governments (they have been a little bit) & he recommended Douglas Murray, who believes that Saudi backed Islamic ultra-conservatives are taking over Europe aided by West-hating Marxists. Which is mad, but it's published by Bloomsbury, so I'd blame them rather than Morrissey.

Well, didn’t Morrissey consider himself a Socialist back then? Far from what he is today, sadly.

Skinny all this would be controversial in a world full of Skinny clones/fake usernames/aliases.

I thought you were going off to tend to the PR 'firm' that is located in your cell phone.

Didn't is correct as the man was never a socialist. His criticism of Maggie made you and others believe he was.
