The SMITHS CONVENTION MANCHESTER 28 & 29 JULY 1988 - VERY RARE PROGRAMME
Ebay Link
The first Manchester Smiths convention attracted Smiths fans from across Europe and became the blueprint for annual international event.
Morrissey allegedly agonised over whether or not to attend, whizzing by in his white VW Golf on the morning of the event. The programme carries an explanation that Morrissey had given an exclusive interview but withdrew permission to use it as it focussed too much on him, rather than the band.
Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce turned up at the Hacienda and a coach tour pointed out the highpoints of Manchester: iron bridge, Salford Lads Club and all. Some even brought gladioli!
The programme itself is cheaply produced, reflecting the fact that this was an idea in its infancy. It is 20 pages of A5 paper, black & white and appears to have been run off on a photocopier. The condition is very good, given its age.
This is a very rare souvenir.
