Scarlet1987

The sanest days are mad
Vauxhall and I:

In my own sick way, I'll always stay true to you.

Strangeways here we come:

Because you'll slip on the trail, of all my sad remains.

Bona Drag:

Sleep on, and dream of love, because its the closest you will get to love.

You are the Quarry:

The squalor of the mind

sorry...I didn't pay attention to the differentiation between Smiths and Morrissey albums.

Not if we pay attention.

VH - rejection is one thing, but rejection from a fool is cruel
when they've bought you and they've sold you and they've billed you for the pleasure and they've made your parents cry, I will be here

BD - a hostage to kindness and the wheels underneath her

KU - and make no mistake my friend your pointless life will end

YA - scavenging through life's very constant lulls

V&I - don't rake up my mistakes, I know exactly what they are
All of LSGD makes me laugh
you won't smile until my loving mouth is shut good and proper forever

Southpaw - so safely with your software oh miles from the front line

Maladjusted - the gulf between all the things I need and the things I receive is an ancient ocean wide, wild, lost, uncrossed
it's my life to wreck my own way
then at midnight I can't get you out of my head
I don't get along with myself and I'm not to keen on anyone else
OMG - I seem to like Maladjusted

MEBY - I'm here I will not move
I've had more than could be my rightful share of nights I can't bear
emotional air raids exhausted my heart

ROTT - every second of my life I only live for you
I once thought that time accentuates despair, but now I don't actually care
the rest are too scandalous to share

YATQ - i will die with both of my hands untied
here you'll find despair and I calling to you with what's left of my heart

YOR - thank you drop dead (actually all of SISMS)
to the rescue nobody every comes

Swords - all forcible entry and morally bankrupt and never non violent and drawn to what scares me and scared of what bores me years alone will never be returend

YEARS OF REFUSAL

When last I spoke to Carol I said:
"I can't pretend I feel love for you."

(When Last I Spoke to Carol)

Girl-with-the-Thorn

If you hit me it's murder
Mine. The majority are unexplained, and for most of the albums I've chosen more than one, but I love them all...

Viva Hate- Every line in 'Late Night, Maudlin Street'. I really cannot choose a specific one. Other than that, "Angel, don't take your life. Some people have got no pride- they do not understand the urgency of life. But I love you more than life, I love you more than life, I love you more than life, I love you more than life". The whole song reminds me strongly of some bad times with a very good friend, so it's a bit of a weeper for me. And I love the repetition of that final line.

Bona Drag- "But Jesus made me, so Jesus save me from pity, sympathy, and people discussing me".
"This world may lack style, I know, but each bud must blossom and grow"
or maybe
"Yes, I am blind. No, I can't see...there must be something horribly wrong with me. God, come down if you're really there. Well, you're the one who claims to care"

Gah, this is so difficult...

Kill Uncle- "Oh, I don't want to be judged. I would sooner be loved. I would sooner be just blindly loved"
"And if ever I just wanted to cry, then I will, because I can"

Your Arsenal- "I am a poor, freezingly cold soul- so far from where I intended to go. Scavenging through life's very constant lulls- so far from where I'm determined to go...Wish I had the charm to attract the one I love, but, you see, I've got no charm"
"You say that the day just never arrives, and it's never been so far away"
It's the sad ones that always get me on YA, but overall it's one of my favourite albums, so this was a really hard choice.

Vauxhall and I- Easy. "Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt, every jammy Stressford poet. Loafing oafs in all-night chemists, loafing oafs in all-night chemists. Underact, express depression, oh. But Bunny, I loved you"
"I've been stabbed in the back so many many times I don't have any skin, but that's just the way it goes"

Southpaw Grammar- "Oh, have you ever escaped from a shipwrecked life?"
"To be finished would be a relief"

Maladjusted- "When the gulf between all the things I need and the things I receive was an ancient ocean, wide, wild, lost, uncrossed"
"Then at midnight I can't get you out of my head"

You Are The Quarry- "And I will die with both of my hands untied"
"And why did you stick me in self-deprecating bones and skin? Jesus, do you hate me?"

Ringleader of the Tormentors- "Every day I play a sad game called 'In the future when all's well"
"And I've been shifting gears all of my life, but I'm still the same underneath- this you surely knew"
or perhaps
"Things I've heard and I've seen, and I've felt and I've been tell me I'll never be anybody's lover now"

Years Of Refusal- "Life is nothing much to lose: it's just so lonely here without you"
"All the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way to the love I am now giving to you, right here, right now, on the floor"
"This might make you throw up in your bed: I'M OK BY MYSELF!"

Swords- "And when they haul me down the hall, and when they kick me down the stairs, I see the faces all lined up before me, of teachers and of parents and bosses who all share a point of view: You are a loser"
"Take me to the place I've been dreaming of. Where the grotesquely lonely meet the grotesquely lonely"
or
"Because of my poor education, I can't endure my situation. This here is my bed, and I must lie"

Phew. Pretty glad I didn't write explanations for all these, or it would have taken hours. I may come back and do it later though.

I planned on avoiding ?"

Viva Hate - it's got to be Maudlin Street. Classic Morrissey technique of relating a non-story through a mixture of meaningful glimpses, half-anecdotes and emotion.

Bona Drag - Picadilly Palare. I love these lyrics because of their musicality - a prime example of one of Morrissey's strongest traits as a lyric writer, namely his ability to find words that just sound good in the context of the tune and his own voice. "Your lovely eek and your lovely riah".

Kill Uncle - There is a place in Hell for me and my friends. Always irresistible when he's in self-mocking mode. "There is a place with a bit more time..." indeed!

Your Arsenal - Seasick, yet still docked. Which is quite beautiful, but not one of his best. I find in general the lyrics are not YA's biggest forte.

Vauxhall and I - Always had a soft spot for Used to be a sweet boy , perhaps because it manages, much like How Soon is Now?, to bluntly state the obvious and still be interesting. I suppose it resides in plainly saying something that nearly everyone feel and think, but which everybody else would consider embarrassing to actually state. In this case, "Something went wrong/and I know I'm not to blame".

Southpaw Grammar - Southpaw. Another Morrissey specialty, the ambiguous morality tale.

Maladjusted - The title track, for the same reasons as Maudlin Street. On a lot of other albums, the winner would have been Satan Rejected My Soul, which is just so funny and full of spirit.

You are the Quarry - The world is full of crashing bores. You have to love that kind of generalised "Fuck you!" addressed to the world at large. Pulled off with enough grace to let him successfully give the world the bird for being too vulgar.

Ringleader - "Life is a pigsty". If mainly for the strangely compelling line "And if you don't know this, then what do you know?"

My early burglary years - Here I just can't choose between I've changed my plea to guilty and I'd Love to. The former, perhaps the most effective expression of self-conscious alienation in his whole lyrical career. The other, a seemingly utterly conventional lyric of love and longing that hooks powerfully into the Morrissey persona. There's something about the lines "I'd Love to/but only with you" that is just very moving, coming from a writer who spent years and years embracing celibacy.

Years of Refusal - You were good in your time. Also not one of his strongest lyrical efforts, here too there is a nice musicality in the lyrics.

Swords - An embarrassment of riches. I'll go with Munich Air Disaster 1958, for being a football anthem musically conventional enough to be played at Trafford, but with alarmingly disturbing lyrics for the genre. :)

cheers

They do not understand
The Urgency of life"

"All your friends and your foes
would rather die than have to touch you"
(from Disappointed)

Kill Uncle:
"Won't somebody stop me
from thinking all the time
about everything
so deeply, so bleakly"
(from Our Frank)

Your Arsenal:

You must be such a fool to pass me by"

because there's nothing left to break"

And caress with your left hand
Everyone I know is sick to death of you"
(from The Operation)

Maladjusted:
"And I don't get along with myself
And I'm not keen on anyone else"

Also, any line from the title track.

The future is passing you by"

That somewhere there's a someone who can soothe me"

but the heart has a heart of its own"
