Right now, mine would be Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." It's just a perfect song. Other perennial favorites include "Temptation" by New Order (duh!) and, embarrassingly enough, "Oh Sherry" by Steve Perry.

Peter Murphy - I'll Fall With Your Knife
Jane's Addiction - Classic Girl
Ben Folds - The Luckiest
The Cure - Love Song
Love & Rockets - Haunted (When the Minutes Drag)
Roy Orbison - Crying
Crash Vegas - Smoke

Hmmmm....

"Oh Sherry" by Steve Perry?? hahhaha excellent song! and I am confident enough in my masculenity to agree that it is indeed a fine love song

My other Top 10 Love Songs at the moment:

1) Die Without You- P.M. Dawn
2) Faithful- Julian Lennon
3) #9 Dream- John Lennon
4) Every Breathe You take- The Police
5) To Look At You- INXS
6) Waiting For A Girl Like You- Foreignor
7) So In Love- Orchestral Maneauvers in the Dark
Nite and Day- Al B. Sure!
9) Message To My Girl- Split Enz
10) Keep On Loving You- REO Speedwagon

Of courtse this list will change instantly depending on my mood and on the woman I am dating at the moment...

"In Your Eyes" is a perfect song. And some horrible assholes have had the utter audacity to do a shitty, unnecessary cover of it. I don't know who they are, but they've been getting some undeserved airplay lately with it.
Oh, well.

My list, by no means conclusive and in no particular order:

The Church - To Be In Your Eyes
Stevie Wonder - Overjoyed
Stevie Wonder - Ribbon In the Sky
The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You
The Blue Nile - A Walk Across the Rooftops
Scott Walker - If You Go Away
Simon & Garfunkle - For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
Al Green or Tina Turner - Let's Stay Together
Terence Trent D'Arby - Sign Your Name
The Beatles - Long, Long, Long
The Beatles - Something
Steve Kilbey - Othertime
Marty Willson-Piper - Forever
Marty Willson-Piper - You Bring Your Love to Me
Peter Gabriel - Love to Be Loved
The Cure - This Twilight Garden
Prince - Condition of the Heart

Post-Traumatic Poetry

Another great Peter Gabriel Song.

"Games without Frontiers " has always meant a lot to me.

Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builts a bonfire, Enrico plays with it
- Whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside
- Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers - war without tears

Here's a picture of a dipstick (not Arthur Ellis's)

Train in Vain.

Temptation by New Order is just wonderful!

Hm, some favorite non-Moz love songs would be "In Your Room" and "World in My Eyes" by Depeche Mode. Well, these are the only two that come to mind at the moment anyway.

I like 'In Your Room' because it isn't your atypical love song (the narrator knows the relationship is doomed) and the subtext to 'World in My Eyes' is plain dirty

Re: The Ruts - Rich Bitch

Even though your so rich
Your such a big, big bitch
If it wasn't for your doh
I'd tell you to go go go

OOOOOOOO feel the luv

Seriously though Billy Bragg is the master of the love song for me, The Saturday Boy, The Price I Pay, Must I Paint You A Picture, Milkman Of Human Kindness, the list is endless. Paul Wellers done some great ones as well, especially with The Jam, for example 'Its Too Bad' among many others.

OK my favourite ones are Billy Braggs 'The Saturday Boy' and 'Last Day Of Summer' or 'Soho Square' by Kirsty MacColl.

There's so many springing to mind now, oh what was the question again ?

Oh yea 'Someone Who Cares' by The Only Ones.

Billy Bragg

I don't really "do" lovesongs, I tend to associate songs with people, whether they are "love" songs or not.

However, for pure emotion, you're definitely right about Billy. It took me a while to get used to his 'vocal style' but I can now really appreciate him.

'Must I Paint You A Picture' does bring a lump to my throat. My other choices for his emotional ballads are 'Ontario, Quebec and Me', 'The Boy Done Good', 'Valentine's Day Is Over' and 'Wish You Were Her'

I think B.B has a greatest hits package out in the next few weeks....

Nice choices.. the Boy Done Good is another of my all time faves.. Wordplay from the streets of London (or suburbia if you like) that pricks national conscience.. Did I really say prick and not smirk..

Anyway, without thinking too much and by no means conclusive..

'Hard Fast & Beautiful' - Cinerama (this is not a love song!)
'Sweetness Come' - Nick Cave
'Julia' - Beatles
'Always on my mind' Willie Nelson (acoustic.. has to be acoustic)
'Past Present & Future' - Shangri La's (I've cried like a baby to this)

Just about every track from the Cave fellow's 'The Boatman's Call'.

'Vincent' by Don McLean takes some beating for songwriting skills.
Might not be an out-and-out love song with winching and shagging on the agenda, but, hey, there's more to love than shagging. Right, kids? So I'm told anyway.

And a love song to a thing, a genre, a movement, a happening, is Patrik Fitzgerald's paean to Punk Rock - 'Safety Pin (Stuck In My Heart)'.
Comes with a McCann Recommendation (rarer than hen's teeth). Check it out kids. I wouldn't lie to you. Well okay, I would - but not about that.

What's "winching"?

It sounds painful.

Re: What's "winching"?

It's an ols scottish word for erm...snogging? is that what you call it now? or just going oot with a burd.

Now for a top 10 Pathos list

If 99%, random figure, of songs of love songs, why can't i recall any?

Blue Bell Knoll - Cocteau Twins is a mood song and there are lyrics to it somewhere but audibly undecipherable.

I recall love songs friends loved which i didn't - Depeche mode gaggable "someone to love" was requested put a damper in the party.
I prefer Dm' See you...not deep but fun New Wave declaration song, puppy love dating...

The The - Uncertain Smile ...

Violent Femmes - I held her in my arms --- but i only held him for a while but a good hug it was.Damn those associations!i love the part "in this world of wreckage"...

Blondie 's My dream became your dream...something of onscreen love...

Now for songs of pathos list....

Dalida - Avec le temps - Leo Ferre... Makes me feel melancholic and cry.

Cure's Love song was put there in 1980s but in hindsight other songs work....
I dunno I have the latter day misses "This is a Lie" comes to mind.

Her - Tindersticks....

Nick Cave- Lucy

But pen means lyrical strength alone. I dunno....
Cuban Bolero songs

Re: Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg's/Wilco Mermaid Avenue 1 has few songs- I guess Woody gets credit for the penning...
She came along to me - "A thousnad books could I write about her" line...If I could know her, I'd know all women."

One by One
Birds and ships

This is one my favourite albums of all tiem ..got me through sickness.
Wilco 's other song from AM gets me associating....

Re: What's "winching"?

Oh God ! PLEASE don't start the great "winching" debate again. Johnny will be coming in his pants having to explain it all to us AGAIN !
