FAO Bertie -- "I Am A Rock" by The Church MP3 + bonus track

Okay, here's The Church's version. It sounds like there's some kind of slight distortion in the recording, but that's how it is on the CD. Still very good. I'll throw in the other Church song I kinda like, "Unguarded Moment." I've heard a few other good Church songs, but these are the only ones I listen to much.

Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the words before;
It’s sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

So long, long between mirages
I knew you'd find me drinking
Tell those men with horses for hearts
That their jibes don't make me bleed
They only make me feel like shrinking
In an unguarded moment

This is an EXCELLENT cover ~ thank you so much! I love the 'church' organ -- how cool.

I am going to listen to the other song now.

Unguarded Moment is great!

I didn't realize how great this band is. I am going to check out some more of their tunes. Thanks.

Glad you liked those. I love that cover of "I Am A Rock." And everyone I've ver played it for loves it.

I haven't followed The Church too closely. Someone from my past was as into them as much I'm into Morrissey, and that's why I have a couple CDs. I was looking into them when they were going through a suckie phase and it turned me off, but they do have some good stuff here and there, and have had a long, low-key career. Their guitarist is excellent. I'd like to look into them again myself.

I have listened to UM about ten times now. I LOVE it. It is one of those songs that grabs you. The melody is great and I love the guitars. Did you ever see The Wedding Singer? Remember the song Somebody Kill Me, that Robbie sings to Julia? The guitar riff in UM sounds similar.

That was back when they were a young new wavey band, which they didn't remain. The funny thing is, in the liner notes to the compilation I got it from, the lead singer says the song means nothing to him, is a load of old tripe, but it's taken on a life of its own and pays the bills.

I'll check it out...after the Carpenters download is finished!

I love Karen Carpenter's voice. I have a couple of their CDs. If you are ever in the market for a great Christmas CD, "Carpenters Christmas Portrait" is nice.

I'm playing "Rainy Days and Mondays."

I like it!

Feeling like I don't belong...walking around...some kind of lonely clown..........rainy days and mondays always get me down...............

It is kind of depressing. I was just listening to it again. I grew up listening to their music. Karen died at age 32, sadly. What a waste.

FAO Bertie -- "I Am A Rock" by The Red House Painters MP3 + bonus track

N.B. I am following close in Theo's motivic footsteps.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

some escape some door to open
this path seems the blackest but i
guess it's the soonest
but there in the clearing i
know you'll be wearing
your young aching smile and
waving your hand
can't go with my heart when i
can't feel what's in it i
thought you'd come over
but for some reason you didn't
glass on the pavement under my shoe
without you is all my life amounts to

a final sleep no
words from my cutting
mouth to your ear or
taut wicked pinches
from my fingers to your bitter face
that i can't heal
i know tomorrow
you will be
somewhere in london
living with someone
you've got some kind of family
there to turn to
and that's more than i could ever give you

a chance for calm
a hope for freedom
outlet from my cold solitary kingdom
by the forest of our spring stay
where you walked away
and left a bleeding part of me
empty and bothered
watching the water
quiet in the corner
numb and falling through
without you what does my life amount to?

I really like this "Rock" cover -- very mellow. Thank you for sending it.

I am going to listen to the other song now.

"Katy Song" is so sad but so beautiful. Those lyrics are great.

Thanks for sending this. You have an rich catalogue of music to share -- and good tastes as well.

Oh, cool! I'm listening to "I Am A Rock" now. This is a very different take on it, which is interesting. I especially like the end.

Anyone have any other versions???? I want every cover of this song!!

Downloading the second track......

Wow! I think that is cool that you and Cod love this song as much as me.

I am going to see if I can find some other covers of it.

I found a Ritalin charged cover of "I Am A Rock"... one sec

LOL! About the band...

Punk's premier cover artists, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a conglomerate of some of the most recognizable faces in new-school punk. Drawn together by a mutual love of '60s and '70s music, the Gimme Gimmes work exclusively as a cover band. Their repertoire include songs from such acts as Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, and John Denver.

Singer Spike Slawson formed the Gimme Gimmes in 1996, drawing in the talents of NOFX bassist Fat Mike, Lagwagon singer/guitarist Joey Cape, No Use for a Name guitarist Chris Shiflett, and Lagwagon drummer Dave Raun. Never originally aiming to put out a record, the band made appearances on punk compilation albums through much of the year. In 1997, however, the band began releasing singles named after the singer they had covered. They produced Billy, Diamond, Paul, Denver, and Barry in this manner.

Finally, the group produced their first full-legth effort, Have a Ball, in late 1997. Two years later, Are a Drag arrived. This particular album was a hit at college radio thanks to the band's quirky renditions of popular show tunes. In 1999, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes reworked bubblegum classics from the 1960s and 1970s for Blow in the Wind. Once more, the band was a hit at college radio and pop kids started catching on to Me First and the Gimme Gimme's infectious pop sound. The R&B tailored album, Take A Break was released in July 2003, just in time for the band's fifth appearance on the annual Vans' Warped Tour. In 2004, the band tackled a set of classic rock hits, easy listening numbers, and even "Hava Nagila" on the "live" album Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah, which included enhanced video footage of the gig in question.
