Elvis Costello's "Toledo" is best song I've heard in six months.

"Toledo" is magic. Its melody borrows from a kind of '60's/jazz fusion that really works well. And the theme is particularly haunting for me, due to the stark, sad turns my life has taken in the last year. I listened to it about 12 times just to make sure I loved it as much as I thought I did (and I did). The song is on Costello's most recent album, a team-up with Burt Bacharach called "Painted From Memory." The best song I had heard previous to this one was by Jeff Buckley, and it was called "Witches' Rave."

I LUV, 'My Aim Is True'...

I understand it's Costellos best album. I also have his greatist hits album.

Magnetic Fields' "I Don't Want To Get Over You" is Best Song I've Heard This Week

So, I FINALLY got around to purchasing "69 Lovesongs" (it's a $35 box set that I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on, despite the fact that I absolutely loved every song [about 4] I had heard from it. I'd gotten a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com so I bought it with that, but when it arrived, the jewel boxes were all broken! The replacement came a couple of weeks later).

The lyrics are as follows:

I don't want to get over you
I guess I could take a sleeping pill and sleep at will
and not have to go through what I go through
I guess I should take Prozac, right
and just smile all night at somebody new
somebody not too bright but sweet and kind
who would try to get you off my mind
I could leave this agony behind
which is just what I'd do if I wanted to
but I don't want to get over you

cause I don't want to get over love
I could listen to my therapist, pretend you don't exist
and not have to dream of what I dream of
I could listen to all my friends and go out again
and pretend it's enough
or I could make a career of being blue
I could dress in black and read Camus
smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth
like I was 17 that would be a scream
but I don't want to get over you

This, my friends, is the current soundtrack to my life.

I like Elvis costello.

I especially like his bass player steve nieve. he adds lots to some songs and i've never been one to notice bass playing that much.

"girls girls girls" is a good overview of his early years before that period where he stopped shaving, started wearing flannel and a hunters/truckdrivers' baseball hat. we don't need english boys looking like they've returned home to Hooks after they've made a longhaul.

i like elvis costello and burt bacharach in the austin powers movie. burt gives a big cheesey smile and I always crack up when I see it.

I sometimes think there are only so many stories in the world. I also just this week finally broke down and bought this boxset (though the little independent record store I got it at charged $39.95!). I had to take it back too, though, because all the jewel boxes were broken.

Right now my favorites are "I think I Need a New Heart" and "No One Will Ever Love You."

Lots of slightly askew sad songs, just like Morrissey should be writing.

Coincidence????

Do me a favor and put your hand on a scalding pot handle...I just wanna see something.

I haven't listened to the entire boxset yet, but some of my faves are:

Sweet Loving Man
Reno Dakota
Come Back From San Francisco
Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side
When My Baby Walks Down the Street

I don't know that that's where Morrissey is "at" right now.

Well, I did nick myself shaving this morning......

Which of the three is the best?69 love songs

I've only seen 69 love songs sold with each disk seperately so my question is, which one is the best to buy?

Here's not the answer you want - none of them.

As a whole, it's a wonderful collection. But I couldn't choose just one of them. They each have wonderful songs. They each have true clunkers, too. I plan to pick and choose and burn my own cd of the best.

If you can only buy one, Vol 1 is the strongest, though.

Message to: GeniusIWas, please post your opinion on this work of art!! I know you cannot resist it!! You converted me after all.

Look at the enthusiasm for Merrits work.. Disc 2 or 3 are the best ones!

There are good and not so good songs on each of the 3 volumes.
But personally I like older Magnetic Fields albums better,
particularly The Charm Of The Highway Strip.
