I shopped around a bit for prices (ebay links included if anyone fancies trying the same products) and here's what I've ordered:
For £7.39 (delivered) I bought a pair of Etymotic musician-quality plugs, which knock 20db (SNR or Simple Noise Reduction) off the racket but leave you with the musical detail:
Eight pairs for £2.74 (delivered) of Safer Safety Detectaplug corded re-usables with a 25db SNR protection rating but which still have some of that attenuation palaver going on to allow clear conversation, etc:
Finally, at £2.49 (delivered), 22 pairs of single use foamies capable of quashing 36db (SNR) to which I can revert if I end up stuck too close to the speakers or if the support act/tinnitus risk doesn't calculate in the artist's favour.
I'd never in my life wear earplugs during a gig! Why not take advantage of great gigging experiences now rather than 'saving your hearing' for a later date? I could get run over by a bus tomorrow, it would a shame if I never enjoyed life to the max. Tinnitus love!

I'm 46 so for me it is that "later date". I already have some hearing loss and I don't want to be so deaf as not to be able to hear the abovementioned bus hurtling towards me.
All my earplugs have arrived in the post now. If Stig has one of his snoring nights tonight, I'll be doing a bit of testing.
