English version:

The Audio of DER SPIEGEL's Interview with Morrissey
British pop singer Morrissey has accused DER SPIEGEL of falsely quoting him in a recently published interview. The magazine stands behind its reporting and has made the decision to post the audio online in response.

On Friday, Nov. 10, DER SPIEGEL culture reporter Juliane Liebert told her editors that she had been offered an interview with British popstar Morrissey and that a decision needed to be made quickly on whether to accept. We agreed: The former lead singer of The Smiths doesn't shy away from speaking his mind - and he also doesn't grant interviews very often.

The following Monday, Liebert flew to Los Angeles, where she was to interview Morrissey on Tuesday. The interview appointment got delayed several times before finally taking place on Wednesday and lasting 40 minutes. Edited versions of interviews published in DER SPIEGEL are usually authorized by the interview subject before publication, consistent with established procedure in German journalism. But in this instance, Morrissey's team elected to forego authorization.

After its publication on Nov. 18 in DER SPIEGEL, the interview (available behind the SPIEGEL Plus paywall in German) generated headlines not only in the German-language media. English publications like the Independent also wrote about Morrissey's statements regarding Trump, Brexit, the #MeToo debate and questions of national identity.

The musician then sought to distance himself from the published interview. "Unless you see the words form in my mouth and then you see or hear the words come out of my mouth... please, if you don't see that, I didn't say them," he told fans at a concert. He said he would never grant an interview to a print journalist again.

On Monday, Morrissey followed up with a post on his official Facebook page casting doubt on whether his statements had been reflected accurately by DER SPIEGEL. He also alleged that the fact that the magazine had not yet posted the raw audio of the interview was tantamount to an indirect admission of guilt.

To counter that claim, the editors of DER SPIEGEL have decided to post the audio of the interview online.

You can listen to the interview conducted with Morrissey in Los Angeles on Nov. 15 here:

Yet thankfully millions of people outside this site continue to love Morrissey and his music.
The last living legend of British pop.

The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about

Morrissey lives rent free in that madman’s head, it’s actually pretty funny when you think about it, the steam coming out his ears as he bashes out another missive that ends with “get f***ed c***!!!”

Good times

Well it sounds like from this thread that this is the final nail in the coffin for a lot of people, moderators included! I would hope then, if you think of yourselves as well adjusted people that this is the last time we’ll see a lot of you posting around here. Afterall, if this evil man has nothing left to offer you and he outrages you so much, why not move on to greener pastures and fill your life with more positive things? To continue to hang around and beat a dead horse and talk over and over about how someone is so awful seems unhealthy, counterproductive and redundant. It would say a lot more about you than it does about Morrissey. So, yeah, I guess this is goodbye for a lot of you!

"And all those lies - written lies, twisted lies....well, they weren't lies, they weren't lies, they weren't lies...."

Personally I don't have any real problems with what Morrissey said in the interview. I don't agree with everything he said, but opinions are like assholes - everyone's got one, and it would be boring as hell if everyone agreed. Expecting your musical heroes to share your political views 100% , or you burn your record collection and never listen to them again, is very childish.

What I find more offensive is the fact that he blatantly lied about what he said, and effectively tried to ruin a journalists career by claiming they made stuff up. Changing your story in the face of a public backlash is a far cry from all that "Morrissey cannot and will not be silenced" guff. Bullshitting in public and getting caught out is extremely embarrassing. At least man up, and have the courage to stick with your views - even if they are very un-politically correct.

the best thing skinny can do is take the picture of johnny marr from his bedside table.

Blow it out your ass, shit brick, Morrissey is at in his career because you idiots cling to everything he says and does and thats given him an inflated ego beyond belief where he thinks he can do and say whatever he wants without consequence, look he’s made incredible music but it doesn’t mean he’s not above being criticized, the irony is that he can criticize everyone else but when it comes to him being criticized it’s a f***ing hissy fit from him and from you little croonie followers you give real fans a bad name. It’s time he mans up and takes responsibilities for his f*** ups instead ofhim blaming everyone else for screw ups and failures.

Still despite all his faults at least he doesn’t own a chimp called Bubbles nor have kids over for sleepovers while plying them with ‘Jesus Juice.’ :lbf::lbf: As celebrities go there are worse to admire.

Yes, but Moz wrote a good song for them a decade or so ago.
They hiss and groan and they constantly moan, but they won't EVER go away, because all they need is... Exactly!

they cant, its like a drug to them, their lives would be meaningless without this site so they will continue to post like the arseholes they are until Ms next album comes out and it will start all over again.
MORRISSEY MAY YER LUM REEK FOREVER.

At the threat of being berated by boring old RumplestiltSkinny, the interview does confirm that Morrissey did indeed say alot of what was alleged, but I do believe it casts a new light on those statements.

For example everything he says about the Weinstein case is dodgy, there's no two ways about it.
I personally don't really believe anybody would lie about being assaulted by this man because of ''disappointment''.
However this is then qualified by him going on to say he completely denounces violent assaults, rape, etc. In practice what we are seeing is Morrissey not literally brandishing everybody who has come out as a victim as a liar, rather there is the capacity for that to happen (I disagree with this also.)
It's like by introducing that topic, he then goes on to discuss hypothetical instances at length, the argument becomes more about the possible implications of censorship and puritanism going forward as opposed to the realities of the matter, which he had already acknowledged and vilified.

Again his views on Kevin Spacey aren't really acceptable.
I'm not sure what his point is that the 14 year old may have know the dangers of the situation he was putting himself in, the bottom line is at 26 Spacey is wholly responsible for his actions here. I especially find these views strange and contradictory of the man once so staunch in his pillorying of The Moores Murderers...
Of course you have to ask where the parents were in this situation as he states, but that's neither here nor there this far after the fact, maybe they were naive too. It is interesting that he says he has only tangentially followed these scandals, it is telling of his lack of knowledge on the topic.

I believe his comments are a mixture of wanting to give ''interesting'' copy by not giving ''the same answers'' as he has stated he likes to do in interviews, dated views on victimhood and simple ignorance, in that the wide scope of these cases is undeniable and not a conspiracy of failed fumblings.

(On a side note I would like to add this interview doesn't particularly abdicate the journalist either. It could be the symptom of wanting to encourage controversial copy from Morrissey, but she can be heard laughing and agreeing with almost everything he says on these topics, she's hardly giving him the Frost/Nixon treatment for somebody who went on to claim to abhor the views too...)

Ultimately I do believe people have reason to be outraged. However I do uphold that if you asked 90% of your idols (and almost everybody around you) what they truly thought of the things you hold dear, you'll come up against friction and disappointment. That's just the ugly truth of other peoples ''truth''. This mentality of casting people aside for their views just isn't progressive in my mind. God knows a million grandparents would find themselves on the fire this Christmas if that was the case. I do understand peoples reasons for doing so though, he has fallen in my estimations.

here u go bitches
Oh, how "professional"...o_O
So, as we can see from the "statement post" Morrissey doesn't refuse about all that he said, he just don't like context of his quotes that spreading all over the i-net right now. "Morrissey is fascist-sexual-rapist!" - well, actually, NO. He really didn't said or supported that, haha:p People is insane or just don't have much time to read the whole article? Clickbate era, coins for views/likes, you know...
Sincerely yours V, with face-palms and greetings from Russia.:)

This is how I feel.
Morrissey should have stood by what he said, if it is how he feels. Most people who will say 'I hate Morrissey now!' and such must have never really been big fans to begin with, to throw away their enjoyment over an opinion anyway.

Like you say, it's disappointing and strange to see him deny such things, when surely he knows he said them?

I have said goodbye, before this. Probably more around the time on the Manchester bombing statement. I haven’t heard the new album, I haven’t bought any tickets for the upcoming tour, etc. But I will still pop by here to watch this car crash unfold.

Good god. He is so patient with her. She appears to be anxious and unprepared; her only mission being to trap him in a web of nervous blabber. Why does anyone need to read a list of questions when you have a legend with such refreshing, open and clear views of the world we are living/suffering in right across from you?

When he speaks of the "German Empire" he clearly says what (I believe) most Europeans think. People are losing jobs, traditions, identity. You can not have in Europe what they have in Canada. Multiculturalism works here because Canada is a land of immigrants. Everybody is somebody else. Every European country has its own identity, nation, language, history. I am not against immigration, people can live in harmony if they respect the laws and traditions of their adopted country.
I could be here all night, elaborating on each and every subject he's talked about. My point is that there are people who agree with him or disagree. I do happen to share the same views as him, unfortunately, we are in minority. It amazes me how the majority can't see what is so obvious to me. I do think, though, that there is no point anymore in proving his argument. He would only suffer Sisyphean syndrome.

As a German I find it very, very strange that she spent two days waiting for the interview and was then so badly prepared. I expected journalists who work for magazines like the Spiegel to be more professional. However, I increasingly find that most people moving around in the public sphere only repeat what they heard elsewhere and many articles in newspapers are badly written, which has often been complained by others as well, because so many of them are opinion pieces without being labled as such. During the past three months I had free access to the whole FAZ in digital form and found those articles however very well written. Maybe it is just a problem with their online publications, I don't buy newspapers apart from the local one that isn't online. And I called the local newspaper earlier this year when they gave wrong information on these Trump inauguration pictures to which I was told that they took it from DPA, like most of their articles. Well...

That whole "German Empire" thing is utter nonsense. It is laughable that Morrissey claims that whenever the UK wants to do something it has to ask Germany. Hello? It was the UK thanks to which the EU has had no proper outer borders and no defence coalition so far outside Nato. It was the UK that continuously dropped out of many regulations and boiled its own soup to gain advantages over others. The EU isn't ruled by Germany, it is in the grips of the World Economic Forum which again is dominated by the USA and the UK with its very badly thought out country competitor indicators that are not for the common benefit but for the superrich who meet up at Davos every year. I have seen some seriously outrageous claims made in British newspapers that I find at best mischieviously misleading and since most people read English and don't know German, the people who are behind this misinformation are incredibly successful.

I mean, if you saw what I posted earlier I was far from worshiping everything he said. Sounds like you're having trouble letting go and moving on. You should probably work on that.
