Could/Should The Smiths have taken a year off after recording 'Strangeways'?

Fletcher's book concludes that the band may have survived if they'd given each other a long break. On the other hand, the scene was so competitive in 1987 that bands felt they had to be always recording or touring. It was the inability to step back from those pressures that did the band in, I think, plus the refusal of Mozza to give over control to a manager (although he seems to have done that in his solo career)
