Compelling Couplets

Your boyfriend he went down on one knee
Well could it be he's only got one knee

I love the childishly pragmatic surliness of those lines

And this even though it isn't a couplet and I'm not quite sure of the line breaks:

I never wanted to kill, I am not naturally evil
Such things I do just to make myself more attractive to you
Have I failed

"Oh the alcoholic afternoons
When we sat in your room
They meant more to me
Than any, than any living thing on earth"

Who can make Hitler,
Seem like a bus conductor?
You do.
Oh phoney, you do!

Reading these, it's really obvious what a massive, unsurpassed genius of a poet he is. It's so easy to take it for granted, but seeing his words like this really makes me appreciate his craft.

I agree and really I think the lyrics of his last few albums have been really strong. I don’t buy that he’s somehow declined lyrically in his later years

I do believe that
The more you give your love
And I do believe that
The more you give your trust
The more you give your trust
And the more you give your love
The more you're bound to lose
The more you're bound to lose

I had to post that, because only two lines would have lost the meaning.

Someone who's worth it
In this murkiness
Someone who's never
Seeming to be scheming

I do believe that
The more you give your love
And I do believe that
The more you give your trust
The more you give your trust
And the more you give your love
The more you're bound to lose
The more you're bound to lose
Found Found Found is massively underrated in my opinion.

Again, not a couplet but still has a beautiful ring to it:
"So how did I end up
So deeply involved in
The very existence
I planned on avoiding?"

When you cycled by,
here began all my dreams.

We are here,
your worst fear. (Early demo lyrics to Nobody loves us)

Your face is as mean,
as your life has been.

Where taxi drivers never stop talking

under slate grey Victorian sky

not the most profound lyric but it’s the one that always stands out to even more so than the opening line which is also pretty good

I think the lyrics lacked quite a bit on WP and LIHS (although there are exceptions), but he really stepped his game up on IANADOAC. The lyrics to River, Secret and Hurling are some of his best in many years.

I don’t agree there but I became a fan later and find I’m not looking for some of the things older fans are looking for
