Christchurch artist switches attention from superheroes to The Smiths - Stuff.co.nz

Excerpt:

Christchurch designer and artist Mark Catley describes it as a labour of love, but The Smiths: The Art Of…. is far more that an exhibition of albums and singles posters from the highly-esteemed 1980s Manchester band.

As a design exhibition, it is up there with the Goethe Institute's survey of posters by German designer Lucian Bernhard (1883 -1972) in Christchurch more than a decade ago.

Like Bernard's posters, The Smiths: The Art Of…. reveals an economy and certainty of design. The posters that accompanied the release of each new Smiths' album and single from 1984 to 1987 represented a near-perfect orchestration of black, white and tones of grey, off a single colour that framed a single figure.
