JJ, this was the game when we took over Highbury in 1984. 25,000 Chelsea fans descended into North London. A book was even written about this day. Have a look on ebay.

Not that again:rolleyes:
The clock end only held 10 / 12,000 so where were the other 13,000 in the ground:squiffy:

We took over the ground that day. Its well known Chelsea were all over the place that day. That morning actually. It was a noon kick off. In the 80's Chelsea were the best away fans in the country. We even came to your lot - Maine Road - and brought 10,000 on a friday night - some city fans still talk about it now. Kerry and Pat scored that night. After Nevin scored he had to stop the Chelsea fans from invading the pitch.

Re: Carefree, wherever you may be...

Chelsea had the best away following in those days. We took 10,000 away regularly. Pat Nevin and the like still talk about Chelsea's amazing away support to this day.

You keep saying ''it was well known''..... by whom?:squiffy:
Yes I was there that Friday night..... one of the most violent games I've been to. Kicking off all afternoon and evening in the city centre and around Moss Side. City had a ground where you could take that many away fans.

Most grounds couldn't accomodate 10,000 away fans:crazy:

Drew
I emailed a big Arsenal going fan I know about this game and the ''Chelsea support'' that day. Here is his reply..........

Phill

I was there. The crowd was c 40k at the start of the seaon in August/ It was a 1-1 draw on a warm sunny day. Chelsea had most but by no means all of the Clock End which then held 12,500 standing. It was pre strict segregation although this was increasingly used. With pay on the gate this was difficult at derbies.

I remeber a section of the Chelsea support singing about having "done the dagos down in Rio" (England had a three match summer to South America playing Brazil, Uruguay and Chile).

There was NO way there were 25k Chelsea there. 7-8k at most.More like 5k I'd say. Chelsea's average HOME attendance was only 21k that season!

Regards

Steven
