"California Son" slips down to number 33 in second week on the UK Official Albums Chart

Official Albums Chart Top 100

Not too bad, it'll no doubt be out of the top 40 next week.

You’ve just shit on your own point there by comparing it to Low In High School, (his worst ever), Malad (a commercial flop), and 2 live LPs.
Low in high school is his worst ever? You're so nostalgic. Kill Uncle holds that place.

Wonder why Doves first two albums have re-entered the charts after almost 18 years since their initial release?

‘Newly-available in 180gm. heavyweight coloured vinyl editions, Doves’ first three albums – Lost Souls, The Last Broadcast and Some Cities - are No.2, No.3 and No.4 on the vinyl album chart, and re-enter the Top 200 at No.50 (1,784 sales), No.56 (1,633 sales) and No.124 (1,033 sales), respectively.’

LIHS has no redeeming qualities at all. But there you go again. Same as thewlis. Comparing shit with shit.

Have you forgot how good Morrissey was, and prob still can be. The bar was set with Vauxhall & Viva Hate, it was reinforced with Quarry, Ringleader, Your Arsenal, even Maladjusted & YOR are looking better and better as the years pass.

Nobody really cares about covers albums. Period. It baffles me as to why Morrissey thought this was a good idea.

B-Sides? Sure, within reason. Live in concert? Sure, maybe one interesting cover per show, as has been his way all along. A whole album? Of mostly questionable choices? Nope. Nope. Nope.

Yet there are people on here ratings these songs an 8, 9, 10 out of 10! Completely incomprehensible.

Surely I can’t be alone in this overall assessment.

It's a boring album. Like the last two, only taken to a new level by purposely making it boring by choosing boring songs. Apart from Lady Willpower

I will not buy any album containing "Wedding Bell Blues" probably the cheesiest song ever written and recorded. That song alone is a legacy killer. Great job, Moz.

Lennys Tune could have been the closing track on The Smiths comeback album.. stunning, simply stunning.

Ive read some comments above and we all have our own opinions on his albums and i am no different. LIHS and World Peace were very poor albums. I dont think he has done a good album since YATQ.

I would love another couple of covers albums. just get it right from the sleeve to the production.

Cali Son sleeve is point blank ridiclous. In fact why not involve the fans for once?.....design the sleeve , select a song.......just a thought.

Vini Reilly , Mark E Nevin and Alain Whyte are sorely missed.

Quarry is so overrated. All the lazy dykes and America is not the world are trash. It also has some of his worst lyrics since Kill Uncle.

Let’s argue over chart positioning for a record that was bested by The Spice Girls and Susan Boyle this week, shall we?

Writers on the storm
Kill Uncle was way better and the excitement surrounding the impending tour was incredible.

I agree, and the concert I went to on that tour showed how much better the songs were performed live. Here are a few from the Music thread:

It is most likely the worst produced of all his records, and could have greatly benefited from being presented in a live setting such as Rank.

The Dallas tour was basically “Kill Uncle” live wasn’t it? Some of the tracks we’re electric! I can’t really listen to the album / studio versions, they’re limp and lacking in energy. I’d still rather listen to it over WPINOYB & LIHS, partly cos’ I enjoy it more, and partly out of stubbornness, I just hate those last two albums! And after a 5 years hiatus from Years Of Refusal, I was so pumped for WP, but try as I did, and I did, I forced that album and those tracks on myself but could never get into it.
