Billy Bragg on free speech, Morrissey, and the resurgence of the Far Right - GQ Magazine

New GQ Article by Billy Bragg:

https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/music/article/billy-bragg-interview-morrissey-free-speech

Excerpt: "So, call it what it is, says Bragg. Morrissey is now a man who knowingly shares white supremacist material on his platforms and, when challenged, doubles down. And while he is free to do so, that doesn’t mean he’s a victim when there’s a backlash. “Liberty without accountability is impunity, which is the most dangerous kind of freedom. Freedom isn't a universal good. There are kinds of freedom that are really, really dangerous.”

What's it to ya if the artist in question is no longer of interest?

Except, the video wasn't made by a "white supremicist". Such a lie.

Billy Bragg - I will ride this horse to money town

My friend
I mugged
For threepence
Morrissey was his name
I rode his press
Till it was mine
And my name
It
Is

Hey, Skinnybob! Nice to see that you're subscribing again! Hypocrite is you. But please, keep looking for those anti-Morrissey articles while subscribing to this site...

I posted this earlier in another thread. Skinnybob wasn't a subscriber at that time:

Hey, Skinnybob, I find it laughable that you search for anti-Morrissey articles every day and then propagate them on here, when Dave (site admin) allows anyone to post anti-Semitic, xenophobic, racist bullshit, that you very kindly allow Dave to get away with...

Btw, you've let your subscription slip...

Oi! Skinnybob! Why the hell are you subscribing to a site that allows users to post alt-right, racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic comments, while at the same time, you attack Morrissey? Why, Skinnybob?

Yep, Bragg is oblivious to his authoritarian tactics. And it honestly seems he’s out to settle old scores by the way he writes about Red Wedge and more. Freedom of speech isn’t freedom from accountability. We all know this. What Bragg appears to want amounts to more than accountability.

What the hell are you talking about? Who is stopping whom doing what they want to? Who has stopped Morrissey doing anything he wants to? The public are pulling back from him because he's become a racist arsehole. Comments and actions have consequences to the people who you want get money from. You can't say 'Migrant boats mean migrant votes' and ' Don't be afraid to be called a racist' and get away with it. It's hitting his income, and he has no one to blame but himself.

Have I mistakenly ended up on BillyBragg-solo.com?

This site used to be about music. Now it’s been hijacked by a handful op people, leftwing and rightwing, trying to be heroes and save the world by posting comments. How sad is that?

If you really want to change the world, throw your keyboard out the window and actually do something real for your community. Otherwise shut up or f*** off.

'do something real'? 'community'? we're Morrissey fans. we're box bedroom rebels. we don't go outside in the sun...

Far right-'Robinson' supporters attack reporters on college green. Video here...

Sadly, and unsurprisingly, one of them is wearing a Morrissey t-shirt. I'm sure he'd be thrilled.

Oh and one question to the inevitable unthinking goons - he broke the law. Do you advocate breaking the law?

[I don't condone violence. If anyone was assaulted with political violence, that is unacceptable; notwithstanding legitimate warring factions, including civil war]

Disclaimer out of the way... people that know, know Robinson is being politically silenced. UK lost free speech, very sadly. They are rightly upset. Here in the states, we are upset when grandma gets her door busted in by the bobbies for inappropriate tweets.

As to the shirt: you (and possibly the media) are reading so much into it. Aesthetically, that scheme goes with poster.

How difficult is it for you to understand? He broke the law - he goes to jail.

No one is silencing him. Like Morrissey, he can say and do what he wants. But his actions and words have consequences. REAL journalists know the boundaries. Little Nazi chancers like him are too thick to understand.

Again - how difficult is it to understand - he broke the law, he goes to jail. Do you advocate breaking the law?

I don't know whether he should have gone to prison or not, but now that he has, shouldn't the same justice be meted out to whichever journalist's decision it was at the BBC to fly a helicopter over Cliff Richards home to film a police raid and tell the whole world that he had been accused of paedophilia when he hadn't even been charged. I know they weren't actually breaking the law, but ethically....

Yes you do, we have a judiciary. He broke the law. He went to jail because he broke the law.
