Best song on Without Music the World Dies so far?

Thank you! Now that's just dreadful. Spreading conspiracies is one thing, but to write something this utterly devoid of wit or poeticism is an even greater crime. I have lost all hope of Without Music the World Dies being any good at all.

I wonder if this is the real reason why Alain and Gustavo left, to spare themselves the embarrassment.

When I listen to this stuff, it's hard not to feel that he's just writing and recording to fill his time. Putting no effort in because he knows it's not likely to be released, etc. He seems jaded and not particularly enthusiastic.

The music for both 'Pop' and 'Notre Dame' share a sort of funky 70's disco swagger - this could well be an interesting avenue to explore for a Morrissey album, and something a bit different. Unfortunately the lyrics are pretty woeful, so have negated any excitement I had about the album.

It's slightly unfair to compare when we've only heard 3 songs off 'Without Music' and 7 off 'Bonfire' - but on the evidence so far, it looks like 'Bonfire' might end up being the better of the two. Even with the awful 'Kerouac's Crack' on it.
I like Kerouac's. It might well be a filler but it doesn't want to be taken too seriously. Whereas Notre Dame's stupid message is even more ridiculous because it wants to be taken very seriously.

Lyrically, definitely, yes. The recording of WMTWD seemed rushed and maybe that's why these lyrics are so bad (or he's gone bonkers with conspiracy shit). As one other poster on another thread already said, he should maybe take a step back from recording and reassess where he wants to take his music. His heartfelt lyrics were always his strong point (and the only one he has musically because he doesn't compose/plays an instrument) and that's why he was/is so respected and loved. He really isn't forced to put new stuff out there, unless he wants that, of course. He could be touring with his back catalogue and all would be fine. Of course I don't know him, but from the outside he seems stuck and uninspired right now.
He had plenty of time to write these lyrics. I just think he is lazy and doesn't care much. And believe me I am sad for this.

No, I think it’s worse than that. I'm afraid he's convinced that anything he writes is brilliant gold.

A friend of mine aptly wrote that Morrissey is going through some kind of vocal Dorian Gray thing. His voice is better than ever, but everything behind it is rotting away.

He performed this Notre Dame song last night. The music was really good - a kicking track. But the lyrics are pretty dire. And why is he espousing a random conspiracy theory which surely was debunked long before he recorded this latest album?

I'm not sure if he believes everything he says or is just trying to be a contrarian and interesting person.

Yeah I know what you mean. The whole tone of that song reminds me of people I know who are heavily into conspiracies and you never really know if they actually believe it or just enjoy the drama and the opportunity to wind people up.
If he carries on like this soon we’ll have a song about how the moon landings didn’t happen 🫤

Because unfortunately Morrissey has been dragged down the alternative/alt.right/Alex Jones/InfoWars rabbit hole. The signs have been clear for several years - 'Notre Dame' just confirms it. It's a shame, but it happens to a lot of folk who get their news online. Morrissey needs to follow his own advice:

Stop watching alternative news
Because alternative news contrives to frighten you
To make you feel small and alone
To make you feel that your mind isn't your own

Pigsty has such lazy lyrics... Not his worst but overrated. The song is brilliant though.

"Even now in the final hour of my life I'm falling in love again" is pretty epic though.

Remembering Lonely Teardrops

“25th Sept 1975, Jackie Wilson had a heart
attack while performing live on stage at the
Latin Casino, New Jersey. Wilson collapsed into a coma suffering severe brain damage.
Ironically, he was in the middle of singing one of his biggest hits, 'Lonely Teardrops' and was two words into the line, ..my heart is crying" when he collapsed to the stage, striking his head heavily. He remained semi-comatose for the nine years until his death in 1984, at the age of 49.”

I swear he's trolling us by putting up that image of him on a mountainside with what looks like a German shepherd as part of the gig slide show 😅

Notre Dame is comical
I do have to say, whether intentional or unintentional, there is something funny about the song. It's the way he sings - this is not terrorism! - against the 'straight man' of the groovy beat. It's not quite like any other pop song.
