Belle & Sebastian back in the USA

> Did it take him 6 years like Morrissey?
> It takes more time as you grow older, it seems.

he really didn't say.....but he made it sound like he was in hibernation for a while.

he also made a crack about playing an acoustic gig in a venue with lit candles and where everyone was sitting down by saying, "it doesn't reflect my age one bit..."

> Should we remember their name? Are they the 'next big thing'?

i dunno. i can't really tell anymore. i was sorta in and out of the place and wandering about.

> Maybe it can work in a third way. Morrissey hears the rumor and then
> decides to join in. What Killborn did back then was nice.

but that's a TV appearance as the star of the show and not being beckoned to show up at someone else's gig.

> Yeah, he has a couple of songs on his website.
> It's tolerable.
> He has a Bono-ish voice at times.

the songs are fun, and it seems like he does have a bit of an appreciative following in dublin....

from the photo on his website it looks as though he is living in the 60s.

Oh, they left that of a big impression on you.

> but that's a TV appearance as the star of the show and not being beckoned

I meant the KROQ show, which you've mentioned. He could have been the star there too, but alas Robert Smith was too much for him to take.

> the songs are fun, and it seems like he does have a bit of an appreciative
> following in dublin....

Well, you know from experience how hard it is to make friends in Dublin
kidding.

we'll see what becomes of him.

> from the photo on his website it looks as though he is living in the 60s.

um, no he looked quite normal to me...

> Oh, they left that of a big impression on you.

partially. the sign at the Hub said the doors were at 8, so i would pop out and check, but strangely, the doors weren't open so i was beginning to get a bit confused and was wondering how much i really wanted to wait around for it as i was starting to develop some serious doubts. and i also wanted to wander around a bit and check out what the temple bar area was like and see if there was anything else going on to kill some time at.

> I meant the KROQ show, which you've mentioned. He could have been the star
> there too, but alas Robert Smith was too much for him to take.

i dunno. i think it probably would have been too much trouble rounding everyone up for just this one show.

anyhow, i did get a ticket to see B&S when they come to town....

> Well, you know from experience how hard it is to make friends in Dublin
> kidding.

too true. not that i really wanted to try because i was tired and wanted to be left alone.

> we'll see what becomes of him.

i can't imagine him being the break-out artist in the US at this point....

> um, no he looked quite normal to me...

He's no Morrissey

So is the Temple Bar area hot and exciting? or is it completely dead?

> i dunno. i think it probably would have been too much trouble rounding

It makes it easier on people don't you think?
Think of having Morrissey, BS and that Rufus guy all at once.

> anyhow, i did get a ticket to see B&S when they come to town....

Oh, you have a better time by just staying at home, it would seem.
A lot of bands are coming your way, you don't need to travel.

> too true. not that i really wanted to try because i was tired and wanted
> to be left alone.

That's what we all say ...

> i can't imagine him being the break-out artist in the US at this point....

Did he break-out in the UK yet?
His song 'Satisfaction' sounds very familiar.

> He's no Morrissey

no, he's not that strange....

> So is the Temple Bar area hot and exciting? or is it completely dead?

i stepped over some people who were falling down drunk. but its hard to tell because i left early in the evening. i think the couse show was over at 11:30 or so and i had half an hour walk back to the hostel and so forth....

> It makes it easier on people don't you think?
> Think of having Morrissey, BS and that Rufus guy all at once.

is there a big enough bed for that? :^P

> Oh, you have a better time by just staying at home, it would seem.
> A lot of bands are coming your way, you don't need to travel.

well, just one so far. we'll see who else pops up on my doorstep.

> That's what we all say ...

> Did he break-out in the UK yet?
> His song 'Satisfaction' sounds very familiar.

er....i don't know if he played that song or not.... :^(

> no, he's not that strange....

yeah, he has children.

An 'early bird' crowd.

> is there a big enough bed for that? :^P

A bad choice of words on my part, but there probably is (a big enough bed).

> well, just one so far. we'll see who else pops up on my doorstep.

your 'back yard'.
Morrissey seems to like El-Paso better.
Maybe if B&S&M tell other bands how much they love and enjoyed Austin ...

> er....i don't know if he played that song or not.... :^(

'you bring me, you bring me, the greatest satisfaction'. something like that.
Catchy is it not?

by the way, have you read this post? A very modest screenplay writer
http://www.morrissey-solo.com/discuss/index.cgi?read=126586

> yeah, he has children.

> An 'early bird' crowd.

nobody else was leaving....which is a complete opposite to the austin crowds where everyone hits the doors after the band is done...but then again, they have a full bar and nobody was being thrown out.

> A bad choice of words on my part, but there probably is (a big enough

maybe there is, but is there enough stamina?

> your 'back yard'.
> Morrissey seems to like El-Paso better.

oh that won't have any effect on him. i'm sure it gives him a cheap thrill not to play here.

> 'you bring me, you bring me, the greatest satisfaction'. something like
> that.
> Catchy is it not?

oh yes...i think i remember that one.

> by the way, have you read this post? A very modest screenplay writer

i saw that as well. good for them. that path sounds like a grandiose headache, but more power to them if they want to weather that crap.

> nobody else was leaving....which is a complete opposite to the austin
> crowds where everyone hits the doors after the band is done...but then

Those Irish, they don't live to the expectations. IRA me arse.
You should have told them there's a tourist in the building.

> maybe there is, but is there enough stamina?

Well, at least the conversation would be lively.

> oh that won't have any effect on him. i'm sure it gives him a cheap thrill
> not to play here.

As much as a thrill of not playing the east coast?
I think he just hasn't come round to it yet.
Has he ever been to Austin?
or does he first need to think of a pun on the name?

> oh yes...i think i remember that one.

> i saw that as well. good for them. that path sounds like a grandiose
> headache, but more power to them if they want to weather that crap.

Apparently they do and he's a super terrific underrated screenplay writer, who's looking to jump someone else's train.

by the way, you can listen to tracks from the new B&$ album on the NME's
website. I personally don't care for them much, the songs are just not
catchy and the lyrics, well ...

> Those Irish, they don't live to the expectations. IRA me arse.
> You should have told them there's a tourist in the building.

the one guy i work with warned me about going overe there because he said i might get blown up, and i asked him why they would want to bomb the country they want to join.

> Well, at least the conversation would be lively.

yeah, rufus would be drunk off his ass...

i bought his album yesterday. not bad, but i still haven't heard every last thing off of it.

> As much as a thrill of not playing the east coast?

he likes to choose victims and watch their anguish when they are denied his presence...

> I think he just hasn't come round to it yet.

er. maybe. we'll see when he goes on his next tour to support this album what happens, but i'm sure it will include at least 4 los angeles dates.

> Has he ever been to Austin?
> or does he first need to think of a pun on the name?

i think he's supposedly been here...maybe during the kill uncle tour, but i'm not sure. could have been the same tour that "live in dallas" was recorded.

> Apparently they do and he's a super terrific underrated screenplay writer,
> who's looking to jump someone else's train.

i'm glad for the super terrific underrated screenplay writers. i'm just super underrated period.

> by the way, you can listen to tracks from the new B&$ album on the NME's
> website. I personally don't care for them much, the songs are just not

i went there this morning and tried to play something, but when i clicked what looked to supposedly be the tracks, it took me to another page so maybe they aren't doing it anymore.

oh well. it comes out in less than a week and i'd buy it anyway. i have all their studio releases except for "fold your hands..." which i have yet to replace after it was stolen out of my car about 3 years ago!

> the one guy i work with warned me about going overe there because he said
> i might get blown up, and i asked him why they would want to bomb the

The Irish are just so 'crazy' and unbalanced (they wish)
Maybe they'll have more luck kicking the Irish out of Ireland,
than they had with the English.

> yeah, rufus would be drunk off his ass...

The fun begins ... rufus is his stage name right?

> i bought his album yesterday. not bad, but i still haven't heard every

So there's still a slight possibility it will be bad in the end

> he likes to choose victims and watch their anguish when they are denied

Somehow I think he's more selfish than that.
He only does what he wants to and for whatever reasons.
Austin just didn't fall into this category.

> er. maybe. we'll see when he goes on his next tour to support this album
> what happens, but i'm sure it will include at least 4 los angeles dates.

Well, that's because he wants to be home and rest.
who can blame him? you know what traveling is like.

> i think he's supposedly been here...maybe during the kill uncle tour, but
> i'm not sure. could have been the same tour that "live in
> dallas" was recorded.

Well I checked and according to MorrisseyTour.ocm he cancelled a show in Austin, TX, not once, but twice!. in 1991 and 1992.
Seems like he loves your town (but you're not alone).
By the way, I also saw the Smiths meetup site.
You are gunstreetgirl, aren't you?
http://smiths.meetup.com/members/27

> i'm glad for the super terrific underrated screenplay writers. i'm just

would you like it if someone bought your screenplay only to toss it in the bin?
I imagine you would

> i went there this morning and tried to play something, but when i clicked

The first one doesn't work, but the ones beneath it do.

> oh well. it comes out in less than a week and i'd buy it anyway. i have
> all their studio releases except for "fold your hands..." which
> i have yet to replace after it was stolen out of my car about 3 years ago!

Have a listen before you buy it.

That's the greatest compliment an artist can get.
Someone is willing to go to jail for a B&S album.
Did the police catch him?
or do they only retrieve radiohead albums?

> The Irish are just so 'crazy' and unbalanced (they wish)

that's pretty much what has happened, hasn't it?

> The fun begins ... rufus is his stage name right?

wainright? i think that's his real name as well.

> So there's still a slight possibility it will be bad in the end

you never know. there are more than a few albums that i own that i really can't tell you how they end. the beginning is OK, but i lose concentration towards the end.

the problem i'm having now is that i really like the first few songs and i'm afraid the rest of the album won't measure up.

> Somehow I think he's more selfish than that.
> He only does what he wants to and for whatever reasons.
> Austin just didn't fall into this category.

> Well, that's because he wants to be home and rest.
> who can blame him? you know what traveling is like.

reason #500 that being a rock star doesn't appeal to me. its OK being out of town for about 5 days, but after a while, it gets tiring....although i'm sure its not as bad when you get a very plush hotel room all to yourself.

> Well I checked and according to MorrisseyTour.ocm he cancelled a show in
> Austin, TX, not once, but twice!. in 1991 and 1992.
> Seems like he loves your town (but you're not alone).

even then, he knew...

an ex-roommate of mine told me about one of those cancellations and i think it was the '92 show.

> By the way, I also saw the Smiths meetup site.
> You are gunstreetgirl, aren't you?

nope! she's somebody completely different. supposedly even lives in the same part of town that i do, but i've never met up with her.

> http://smiths.meetup.com/members/27 would you like it if someone bought
> your screenplay only to toss it in the bin?
> I imagine you would

hey, if they pay me....they can do what they want.

i have no shame or delusions of success, and i'm sure the $5 anyone forks over for my screenplay would be the most money i'll ever see from any work i've created.

> The first one doesn't work, but the ones beneath it do.

ah...now i know.

> Have a listen before you buy it.

its not going to affect my decision to buy it.

although there are a couple of CDs i'm looking at otherwise. i'm a little bit interested in the Thrills, and someone named Cara dillon that i heard in a record store in ireland. i would have thought maybe her's would be in stores in america because it was released on rough trade, but i see no sign of it at my local store.

> That's the greatest compliment an artist can get.
> Someone is willing to go to jail for a B&S album.

he was singing 'the state that i am in" when they brought 'em in, and he claimed his life was completely changed.

> that's pretty much what has happened, hasn't it?

No. Don't look, they're still there.

The poor man.

> you never know. there are more than a few albums that i own that i really

Maybe you should use the shuffle option.

> the problem i'm having now is that i really like the first few songs and

Why not? it's not like they write the album in chronological order.

> reason #500 that being a rock star doesn't appeal to me. its OK being out

Good thing no one made you an offer
I guess it's not that bad once a year.

> even then, he knew...

he knew what? is there something I'm missing?

He cancelled a lot of show in 1991, but the story of the Austin cancellation
is here:
http://www.tmregistry.com/passion/moz-gi9105us.htm

in 1992 he cancelled only Austin and Finsbury Park, England:
http://www.tmregistry.com/passion/moz-gi9105us.htm

> nope! she's somebody completely different. supposedly even lives in the

I'm sure you can get a better offer on Ebay.
I'm sure there are a lot of drained Hollywood screenplay writers
looking for a screenplay to call their own.

> ah...now i know.

> its not going to affect my decision to buy it.

That's not the best strategy for shopping (in general).

> although there are a couple of CDs i'm looking at otherwise. i'm a little

I like the Thrills. Harmless, cheery pop, although they admit the lyrics are quite depressed while the tunes are uplifting.
One Horse Town and Big Sur are nice, while Santa Cruz is annoying, it is supposed to be about people they've met, who were living the good life on the beach with their beautiful girlfriends. But when they came back a year or so later, those people kind of 'lost the plot'.

> he was singing 'the state that i am in" when they brought 'em in, and

And he is finishing his sentence just in time to steal the new album,
you better hurry up and buy it

> if they had found any in my collection....

It's just the first name I thought of.
I bet the police confiscates tons of albums,
we should find out where the public auctions
take place.
The policemen usually take the good stuff,
but they probably have bad taste ...

> No. Don't look, they're still there.

darn.

> The poor man.

i don't mind. its more character than being the 5 trillionth person named "john" or "matt"

> Maybe you should use the shuffle option.

maybe....but then i'd want to try and press repeat or skip and i would get all thrown off....

> Why not? it's not like they write the album in chronological order.

no, but i think they frontload the good songs at the beginning. there is always a killer opener, and then it goes downhill afterwards

> Good thing no one made you an offer

right now, they'd be saying, "she's the laziest person in entertainment!"

> I guess it's not that bad once a year.

or like moz...once every 4 years :^P

> he knew what? is there something I'm missing?

that i'd want to show up!

oh well. we're a bunch of hicks anyway.

oh god. not unless i had electroshock therapy or began popping pills or something.

> I'm sure you can get a better offer on Ebay.

if they gave me a cut of the royalties, i wouldn't really care. i'd be too lazy to shop it around myself.

> That's not the best strategy for shopping (in general).

maybe, but i probably buy about 3 things per year on a whim if that many.

> I like the Thrills. Harmless, cheery pop, although they admit the lyrics

anyone who lives on the beach in california is crazy to begin with. the sand in their shoes probably drove them nuts.

> And he is finishing his sentence just in time to steal the new album,

i'll buy him his own copy and post it as a congratulations on his parole.

> It's just the first name I thought of.

the police probably stole all the AC/DC and Iron Maiden albums.

or 'Suzanne'?

on the other hand, you may discover new and exciting tracks.

Why? They already sold you the album?

> right now, they'd be saying, "she's the laziest person in

Yeah, she never released an album, how lazy is that!?

> or like moz...once every 4 years :^P

He's not that lazy, it's once every 2 years.
and an album once every 6 years.

> that i'd want to show up!

So you're on personal names basis, ha.

> oh well. we're a bunch of hicks anyway.

hillbillies. Love that word.

> oh god. not unless i had electroshock therapy or began popping pills or
> something.

that can be arranged.

> if they gave me a cut of the royalties, i wouldn't really care. i'd be too

a minute ago you were willing to take 5$, now it's royalties.

> maybe, but i probably buy about 3 things per year on a whim if that many.

It's not the number of things you buy on a whim, it's their scale ...

> anyone who lives on the beach in california is crazy to begin with. the
> sand in their shoes probably drove them nuts.

I would think there are worse places to have sand in ...

> i'll buy him his own copy and post it as a congratulations on his parole.

> the police probably stole all the AC/DC and Iron Maiden albums.

I would imagine there are enough of these in the trash.

> or 'Suzanne'?

there are fewer of me...even if my name isn't that appealing

> on the other hand, you may discover new and exciting tracks.

sometimes, yes.

> Why? They already sold you the album?

they have, but its still a statement on what the rest of the album is going to sound like....imagine if they had put "some girls are bigger than others" as the opener for "the queen is dead"

> Yeah, she never released an album, how lazy is that!?

on the same par as, "thank god she never released an album!"

> He's not that lazy, it's once every 2 years.
> and an album once every 6 years.

so that gap between '95 and '99 was all in my head?

> So you're on personal names basis, ha.

he probably doesn't know me by "suzanne" but instead by a 4-letter word as "that #*@% from moz-solo.."

> hillbillies. Love that word.

> that can be arranged.

> a minute ago you were willing to take 5$, now it's royalties.

i will take the most amount of money that i can get for the least amount of effort. if someone walked up and gave me a $5 to buy their own copy, i would take it. if someone shopped it around, i would take my cut.

> It's not the number of things you buy on a whim, it's their scale ...

but an album? its not like i'm living in Ethiopia and am dying in the famine and have $3 to my name and i must decide where it goes.

besides, i finally did hear a cut from the NME site yesterday and it sounds good to me. i couldn't hear more because there were server problems along the way and it would play 4 seconds of the song and then stop...

> I would think there are worse places to have sand in ...

> I would imagine there are enough of these in the trash.

there are cops we are talking about! not CMJ critics.

> there are fewer of me...even if my name isn't that appealing

oh, I don't have a problem with the name, I just thought it's
very common. what is the most popular female name?

> sometimes, yes.

> they have, but its still a statement on what the rest of the album is
> going to sound like....imagine if they had put "some girls are bigger

and what statement did 'the queen is dead' make as for the rest of the album,
when the album ends with a song like 'some girls'?

> on the same par as, "thank god she never released an album!"

It's better than people who did get to release an album and shouldn't have had.

> so that gap between '95 and '99 was all in my head?

what about the Maladjusted tour in 97? or does that not count for some reason?

> he probably doesn't know me by "suzanne" but instead by a

that lady from moz-solo?

> i will take the most amount of money that i can get for the least amount

Well, we'll work out the details when we'll have something 'real' on our hands.
You need an award winning screenplay, isn't there a shabby third graders competition anywhere you can win?

> but an album? its not like i'm living in Ethiopia and am dying in the

now it's an album, tomorrow it's a time share unit.

> besides, i finally did hear a cut from the NME site yesterday and it

those were the good 4 seconds, the rest is really bad.

> there are cops we are talking about! not CMJ critics.

Just said they don't have to steal these crap records.
And by the way TXPD has really been offended by your remark.
A patrol car is heading in your direction, police brutality you know.

> oh, I don't have a problem with the name, I just thought it's
> very common. what is the most popular female name?

what? i so rarely hear anyone with my name that when i hear it, i think, "ok, who stole my name????"

right now, i think the most common name is jennifer.

> and what statement did 'the queen is dead' make as for the rest of the

there are only so many notes the human ear can hear during the course of an evening....

but its better when you go from silence to an explosive beginning.

> It's better than people who did get to release an album and shouldn't have

i one-upped them in that area. now, if we could only get Michelle branch to follow my example....

> what about the Maladjusted tour in 97? or does that not count for some

oops! how stupid of me. i even flew out to boston to see a show and i STILL forgot! ha ha!

said with sarcasm...

> Well, we'll work out the details when we'll have something 'real' on our

no, they want to award the prize to the 3rd graders. i'm still in the 1st grade.

> now it's an album, tomorrow it's a time share unit.

stock in a company....a new ferrari...

> those were the good 4 seconds, the rest is really bad.

what? i have to disagree...it was good to hear that they were going back more to the old sound because they were getting really strange sounding for a while.

> Just said they don't have to steal these crap records.
> And by the way TXPD has really been offended by your remark.
> A patrol car is heading in your direction, police brutality you know.

i think they would be offended that some out of stater such as yourself thinks they would listen to sissy music like folk tunes.

> what? i so rarely hear anyone with my name that when i hear it, i think,
> "ok, who stole my name????"

I never said it was the most popular name in Austin, TX.
I meant in general.

> right now, i think the most common name is jennifer.

really? don't people get tired of it? Is it because of 'Friends'?

What I meant is that by hearing 'the queen is dead' (the song)
you couldn't foresee what the next songs will be like.

that's the first thing we'll do if we ever get a hold of a time machine ...

It could have been funny, if it wasn't a symptom of all sorts of debilitating conditions.

you look older than your actual age (sorry if that came out as an insult ).

The Ferrari might be a good idea actually.

Well, but the lyrics, I mean 'Billy was bullied at school ...' (or something)
what is that?

> i think they would be offended that some out of stater such as yourself

You know they're extra sensitive when 8 cops simultaneously fire at an unarmed youth.

maybe in france, but i don't bump into people with that name that often.

> really? don't people get tired of it? Is it because of 'Friends'?

no, these are now 20-something year old people.

> What I meant is that by hearing 'the queen is dead' (the song)

that's not the point! the first song is generally meant to convince you that this is the greatest album ever. by the end of the record, you are distracted and vaccuuming the floor and such.

its not too late to stop her before the next album...

hell, i don't care. i wish my brain would go.

i was held back a couple of years.

> The Ferrari might be a good idea actually.

unless it makes me so broke that it ruins my credit.

> Well, but the lyrics, I mean 'Billy was bullied at school ...' (or

is it as good as "you were a boy before you became a man...i don't see the joy..."?

> You know they're extra sensitive when 8 cops simultaneously fire at an

hey, the cops had no choice! the other 7 might have missed and they couldn't take the chance of him getting away!

> maybe in france, but i don't bump into people with that name that often.

Nah, in France it's Sezan. Maybe it's popular in Germany.

> no, these are now 20-something year old people.

but people are still giving this name to newborns.
it's a vicious circle.

If that were true then people would listen to the album from end to start,
before they buy it. By your theory, there can be only one song at the
beginning and the rest can be blank.

> its not too late to stop her before the next album...

she's got a new single out I think, we're too late.
why don't people undergo scrutiny before being allowed
into a studio?

> hell, i don't care. i wish my brain would go.

having a brain can be debilitating as well.
You can have a lobotomy.
Apparently back then in the 50s when it
was considered the magic solution to
all mental illnesses (like today's pills)
they took an ice pick and shoved it
in a certain spot near the eye socket.
That would disconnect the lobe in a sec.
The doctor's observation would then
be 'the patient looks giddy, relaxed and happy'.
quacks!

> i was held back a couple of years.

yeah, but how do you explain the other 10 years?

> unless it makes me so broke that it ruins my credit.

credit is all so important in America.
You can be a master criminal, but if you keep your credit clean ...

> is it as good as "you were a boy before you became a man...i don't
> see the joy..."?

This line is not that bad. it's in the same vein as 'used to be a sweet boy,
but something went wrong' i.e. as a child he had joy as every child has,
but where and why did this joy go when he became a man?
which also ties in with 'you ran back to ma, which set the pace ...'.

Although I find the line 'you were a girl before you became a man'
more amusing, but that's just me.
I also think that in 'First of the Gang' it should be 'such a busy boy'
but that's also just me.

> hey, the cops had no choice! the other 7 might have missed and they
> couldn't take the chance of him getting away!

yeah, they can't afford witnesses.
