A Smiths walk, art exhibitions, poetry reading and theatre performances are among the events being held to celebrate the first Shelagh Delaney Day.

A 90-minute guided tour, explaining the history of Manchester band The Smiths and their links to the Salford playwright, will start from Oxford Road Station, at 11am, on Saturday, November 22.

The Smiths used a photograph of Shelagh on one of their album covers and lead singer and lyricist Morrissey said she inspired his writing.

The route will visit the Opera House, which inspired Shelagh to write her first play, A Taste of Honey.

Salford Lads Club in Ordsall will be exhibiting photographs by Arthur Brougham between 11.30am and 2pm on the same day and from 12noon to 3pm on Sunday, November 23, and the following weekend.

Her play A Lion In Love will run at Salford Arts Theatre from Wednesday, November 19, until Saturday, November 22, and Eccles Town Hall will screen A Taste of Honey at 7.30pm, on Friday, November 28.

On Shelagh Delaney Day itself, Tuesday, November 25, Salford Museum and Art Gallery will display Salford artist Harold Riley’s portrait of Shelagh and Salford Arts Theatre has a sold-out programme of activities.

These include a new poem performed by Salford’s JB Barrington, a performance by Salford Theatre Company based on Shelagh’s unfinished work and a screening of Dance with a Stranger, her third screenplay.

Item shows Shelagh photographed outside her house on Duchy Rd, I spent the first 20 years of my life on Duchy Rd and never knew. I've been trying to figure out where on Duchy her house was but pictures not great, and was taken 4 years before I was born so I'm struggling with it.

Just googled it apparently they're putting a plaque up outside 77. It's 7 doors away from the first house I ever lived in.
