All New Misheard Lyrics

YOU'RE ALL WRONG!

It's both :p: http://www.oz.net/~moz/lyrics/louderth/sweetand.htm, I read somewhere that the "debt" lines were a reference to a comedian Morrissey was a fan of...

Ah, from the Sources page...

Sweet And Tender Hooligan

"In the midst of life we are in debt"
Peter Cook & Dudley Moore
"In the midst of life we are in death"
Coleridge (adapted by Cook and Moore for their sketch)
Also from The Burial Service in the Book of Common Prayer

I had a misheard lyrics last night & felt mortified!

"all the strings the family clings" was how I thought Handsome Devil started...but looking at the lyric book for the first time...was shocked to read it as "all the streets are filled with things". I was quite embaressed.

Another one that I don't so much mishear but kind of got myself into the habit of singing it the wrong way is in Rubber Ring

"and who were The Corrs?" instead of "In here with the cause"

I've got loads of boring ones such as:

"punctured bicycle and a hillside SOS"

my friend at uni thought it goes " Big Mouse strikes again" but then he was a bit simple

Indeed. Would have been a bit prescient, though. We all know he predicted Diana's death, but predicting the rise of The Corrs would be more than anyone could believe.

you can't think of any more words can you? I suppose if you have a day and a half to spare you can always trawl through LASID or Wor(l)d of Morrissey.

THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS!

I have cancelled all of my plans this evening so that I may comb through my itunes and figure it out.

That's what I thought it was. I've listened to it three times....I don't know what else it could be.

For the love of God CrystalGeezer
a little help please.?! ;)

Good guess, but I don't hear anything like "Burma" either.
Little help pretty please CG...

Okay this isn't much help because it gets complicated with age. I THINK it's from Late Night Maudlin Street. As a young girl I sang it wrong over and over and over. But now that I'm older and have studied the lyrics and know what they are, I can't relisten to this song and find the mistake because all the real words have imprinted in my memory. Either this is the case, or it's a song in the same key as Late Night. And maybe I'm just confusing Late Night because there's a mention of "police." But I distinctly remember as a young girl thinking "What business does Morrissey have with Burma?" I assumed it was some exotic country that one goes to where gayness is accepted. I'm totally serious.

I listened to "Late Night.." on Friday, and then a few times after you made this post. I don't hear it either. Must have been a childhood thing....
The line in "Paint a Vulgar Picture" is the closest I've heard to what
I can imagine you're describing.

Is "Unsolved Mysteries" still a TV show? ;)

I'll keep working on it and you'll be the first to know, I promise. Thank you for your interest.

A long time ago, I thought, "And I'm Still Fond Of You, A Ho' " :D

My cousin thought Sing Your Life said, "Senior Life." He told me, "David, when I get older I'm gonna be singing Senior Life..."

Ah, memories.

from "My Dearest Love"

At first I thought he was singing:

"...Where the grotesquely homely
meet the grotesquely lonely..."

instead of the correct

"...Where the grotesquely lonely
meet the grotesquely lonely..."

I've been singing this wrong since the first day I committed it to memory. Just learned I was wrong TODAY. (Shameful, I know.)

What she said:
"I smile 'cos I'm hoping for an
early death
AND I NEED TO CLING TO SOMETHING!"

What can I say? I've never been a smoker. :o

I always thought in This Charming Man, it was 'jumped up country boy'. I still sing it like that even tho I know better :p

I always sung that...still forget sometimes.

For "You just havent earned it yet baby I used to say "YOU JUST HAVENT EARNED IT, JEFF DALEY

When I first got into The Smiths, I heard Still Ill, and I heard 'Under the bridge we kissed' as 'Oh Liliana, bridge, we kissed.' :D I'll have to think of some more that a Morrissey or Smiths lyrics, because the only other ones I can think of are for The Clash and Blur.

I still don't know whether it is

in the midst of life we are in debt
or
in the midst of life we are in death

I think there was a debate on this before, but I don't think there was a conclusion! hahaha

(i think it's death :p)

My Louder Than Bombs LP says 'in debt'. It got Strech Out and Wait wrong, though.

Yes, mine comes from "Southpaw." I thought the lyric was, "You were a boy before you became a man / I don't see the choice."

It is actually, "You were a boy before you became a man
I don't see the join "

Strictly speaking, I like my interpretation better! ;-)

I always thought it was 'I don't see the joy'. Well, 'join' probably works better.
See, that's what happens when they don't include lyrics booklets! :D

i read somewhere that somebody was convinced that "and in the darkened underpass i thought oh god my chance has come at last" was actually "and in my darkened underpants..." :D
I dont think 'There is a light...' would be considered such a lyrical masterpiece if the protagonist had shat himself.

To begin with I heard it as 'And in the dark end of the past' not 'And in the darkened underpass'. It's not as funny as yours, though. :D
Certain People I Know:

"they break their necks and count to four to get them fixed"

i'm assuming it's actually can't afford but since there's no lyric sheet, who knows?

I've always thought it was 'count to four'. Yet again, the follies of skimping out on including a lyrics sheet!

There's probably tons of lyrics I've got all screwed up in my brain...but the only one I can think of is from "Your The One For Me, Fatty"

I used to think it was:
"All we're about to see is some hope and some despair"
not "All over Battersea, some hope and some despair"

I always thought that was what it was, and then I thought, 'Wait a minute, I could swear he's saying Battersea there!' when I was listening to Beethoven Was Deaf one day. And I live within half an hour of Battersea, so I can't blame it on never having heard of it!

I think I butchered "Nobody Loves Us" quite a bit:

"Nighttimes fine, never mind things can only improve..."

I heard that too. :D I could never really decide whether it was 'nine times' or 'night-times'.

'The Father Who Must Be Killed'

"Just as motherless birds fly high...and socialise...socialiiise...socialiiiiise..."

Ditto.

I totally thought it was 'can't afford' as well.

For years in Harsh Truth I thought it was:

'laughter's all now, here you can'

like he was just rearranging the words

haha
