Alanis Morrissey-ette?

A "friend" just recently tried to convince
me that Alanis has replaced Morrissey as "the
pop world's queen of angst." Blasphemy!!

My argument against it was that, obviously, Alanis
has little to no sense of humor, at least none
to compare to His Mozness. But I'm afraid my
protestations were lost on deaf ears. It's only
a matter of time before some Rolling Stoner
writes this in an article -- am I the only one
laughing at the absurdity?

Perhaps there is some truth to your friend's argument. Have you ever taken the time to read Alanis's lyrics? She knows how to take it deeper. I wouldn't say Alanis has "replaced" Morrissey, but they definitely have something in common.

I thought her first album touched on things in
a not-un-Morrissey-esque way, but listening to
her new one, which has it's moments, is more like
reading a book of therapy notes. I don't think
she has much in the way of Morrissey's self-
deprecating wit, either.

I think she's fine, I just don't think she (or
anyone) is "the new Morrissey", as my friend
put it. BTW, he's already off the speed-dial.
LoL

I haven't heard her new one yet and don't have any plans on purchasing it. I quite liked her 2nd album, but there's only so much of her whining and shrieking I can stand.

That's ridiculous, you should give your friends a smack on the head for that..... Most of her songs are enumerations of things she finds ironic or she is thankful for or whatever - I don't see the genius in there! Plus I had the pleasure of seeing her live ( I didn't pay for it!), her singing is even crapper then and her harmonica playing makes you cry...... Alanis is a big show-off and nothing else. Someone who through some miscalculation of circumstances convinced the world that they are good, just like Michael Jackson and Guns'n'Roses did once.

I won't get into her inability to grasp the meaning of "ironic," but...

...Alanis' lyrics are basically straight-forward; prose-like, without much poetry or witty arrangements. They can't compare to Morrissey's.
