There was an a-ha moment at the Nokia Theatre Thursday night -- and it came from a fan who says the '80s synth-pop relics have always been underrated.

"Everybody talks about Depeche Mode, the Cure and Duran Duran, but a-ha is just as influential," said Lower East Sider James Rodriguez, 30.

As evidenced by the packed house, plenty of people agree. But it was their last chance to catch the Norwegian band, whose 1985 hit "Take On Me" became an '80s anthem. Formed 28 years ago, the group is now retiring and is on the road with its "Ending on a High Note" worldwide tour.

Actually, a-ha has rarely been seen here: Since 1986, they've played in the US only once -- in 2005 at Irving Plaza.

The Nokia gig was a high note, indeed. Singer Morten Harket, 50, still has a superior multi-octave voice and a falsetto that makes men want to cross their legs. He has theatrical phrasing much like the late Freddie Mercury or an early slice of Meat Loaf, and his ability to sustain an impossible note, without losing pitch, is remarkable.
At 47, keyboardist Magne Furuholmen is the kid in the band, and he remains a nimble and inventive synthesizer ace. Guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, 48, is solid in providing the band's rhythm.

For lifelong fan Joan McCoy, a 50-year-old from Fairfield, Conn., the music still sounded fresh. "This music is from the '80s and it still sounds good . . . It has staying power."

After a two-hour show, during which the band worked to keep the performance lively, a-ha still had plenty of juice left to do an encore of "Take On Me" (the video, a combo of animation and live action, was one of MTV's first blockbuster hits) that was completely true to the original 1985 studio take.

Rodriguez, the fan who called a-ha underrated, added, "This is the first time I've seen them, and I'm a little sad this will be my last, but I'm grateful I'm here."
