‘The Perks Of Being A Wallflower’ soundtrack to include "Asleep"

We’d say the makers of upcoming film The Perks Of Being A Wallflower have the soundtrack almost right. (It’s out on the super-crowded release day of September 18.) The 1999 cult hit novel by Stephen Chbosky takes place over the 1991-1992 school year, so college radio classics like The Smiths‘ “Asleep”, XTC‘s “Dear God”, New Order‘s “Temptation” and Sonic Youth‘s “Teenage Riot” seem right at home on the tracklist for the film (also directed by Chbosky). But we said “almost” because we’re not quite sure how Cracker‘s 1993 tune “Low” made its way in there — especially given that it wasn’t even released as a single until 1994.

At any rate, jump below to see the tunes that made the cut for the Pittsburgh-set coming-of-age tale starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller and Paul Rudd.

Strange, I think "Asleep" is about the only song from the book to have also made it into the film - I'm glad it has because it was given the most prominence by Charlie and it wouldn't have felt right if they'd left it out. I thought they'd try to stick to all the original songs from the book though (eg Nirvana is mentioned in the book), but hey if there was one song to be in it I would've definitely have picked "Asleep". I'm curious to see if this film is any good because the book was awesome.

The book was pretty all right, but what I'd really like to see filmed is "The Wrong Boy" by Willy Russell.

Sounds okay. Cure's Wish was big when I was in high school during that time along with Check out the Songza playlist Graduating in Early 1990s Alternative for other awesome songs from that time by James, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, REM and The Trash Can Sinatras

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" - tons of Moz/Smiths references

Saw "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" tonight at Arclight and was pleasantly surprised to find that the main characters first try at popular music is "Asleep" by The Smiths.

He then proceeds to have posters all over his room of Morrissey and The Smiths/...as do his friends.

Very John Hughes type movie with a fantastic soundtrack!
