Dig!: How Gen Z Is Embracing The Smiths On TikTok

Very interesting article! Brilliant that this is happening and that TikTok is helping a new generation of people discover The Smiths. Have to say I don't understand the section about "This Night Has Opened My Eyes", though: Responding to lyrics that reflect feelings about toxic relationships...

This isn't really a "freedom of speech" thing exactly but if anyone fancies reading a very smart (and long) essay about the current start of what art is (and is not) allowed to do, then help yourself to this. it's brilliant. (No mention at all of Morrissey, mostly about Philip Roth, but still.)

    London - Eventim Apollo (March 19, 2023) post-show

To be honest, I can only see tiny cracks in the Wall of Woke, nowhere near enough yet to bring it tumbling down. But hey, that's a discussion for another thread/day/year...

It is tremendous, isn't it? I feel like we should credit the photographer - seems to a guy called Lee who has his own wedding photography business. I know it's grainy but that only adds to the image's power. It's almost religious, isn't it? Brilliant stuff!

Is it too soon to talk about IANADOAC?

I love "Bobby" as well, it's a blast! Daft lyrics, an unlikely duet, and the band going nuts in the background at times...

Is it too soon to talk about IANADOAC?

Once I Saw the River Clean was soooo good when they played it in 2020 or whenever that was. Wish he'd bring it back!

Yes, totally! It's one of those weird things where he basically sings the same note 6 out of 7 times, in the title phrase, but somehow it gets lodged in your brain.

Thank you! It's hardly poetry, is it, but I absolutely adore this song already and it would sound AMAZING on Radio 2 in the spring/summer...

I'm not that interested in the lyrics of this song (I much prefer the songs where Morrissey bears his heart, his soul, rather than clumsily tells us what to think) but as a catchy piece of music this is tremendous. And without music the world would indeed die - so, fair enough.

See "The Headmaster Ritual", 1985. Morrissey sees very little value in traditional school education.
