Rumors on Morrissey-solo answered by 'someone in the know'
Posted on Mon, May 15 2000 at 9:51 a.m. PDT
by David T. <[email protected]>
Regarding two recent postings of rumors on this website - I will try to be more careful from now on with what is posted on the main page. I've been susceptible to hoaxes admittedly, as I don't currently have a way to confirm things and I have had an inherent trust that people would not waste my time by making up news items. Although it may seem quiet here as of late, behind the scenes I have been very busy working on a technical redesign of the site's main page which will hopefully be finished within a month or so.

Luckily, whenever a rumor comes up it is usually confirmed or refuted fairly quickly. From now on I will be very careful about printing things that are sent completely anonymously unless I can confirm them. I don't mind posting 'anonymous' items at the request of the submitter, as long as the original submission includes some identification, such as the case of this one from 'someone in the know':

I am writing this to your website to put and end (hopefully) to the rumors that have been surfacing of late. I do not wish to give my name, but I am someone "in the know" that's for sure. First and foremost, let me say that the rumors of Moz and Johnny Depp are 110% untrue. It is true that Moz's LA home is next to Mr. Depp's estate; however the two have never met.

Furthermore; Gary Day does not presently own a computer (although he is looking to buy one). So, the  message posted a couple of weeks ago, was not posted by him (though I'm sure you probably knew that already).

Also, John Cale's name has been mentioned as a possible producer for the next album, but this is not ground-breaking news as this was announced almost a year ago via other channels. The same is true about the Maverick records deal, that had been mentioned months earlier.

There are no plans to have "old faces" returning behind the desk either. That includes the really old ones as well as recent ones. Morrissey has not written any duet period, not with Johnny Depp, Alain or anyone. I think he got his fill of duets last time around. And lastly; as for the "anonymously sent" email; I believe this person to be a fraud as well. First off, I cannot recall anyone who jumped on board with "Southpaw", where the author states he first worked with Moz. All the people that worked close to Moz on that album had worked with Moz previously. In all honestly, there is nothing to tell right now. All is quiet on the Morrissey front. I think that times like these are when the most untruths come out. A tour just ended... and everyone wants to know what Moz's next move will be... so people start making things up to toy with the masses. Nothing is going on right now, and nothing will happen for the next couple of months. There is a strong possibility of the tour picking up again this summer into the early fall, but again nothing is set in stone.

David T, I just want to say 'thank you' for maintaining this site. I'm sure some ungrateful people will come along after reading your posting today about the false rumors and say stuff like "I told you so" and other such negativity. But, the majority of us who come here on a regular basis are very thankful for your hard work and dedication. The information you provide is vital. It doesn't really matter that a false rumor or two made it's way onto the news page recently. At least it made things interesting around here for a couple weeks..... So anyway, thanks again.

PS: Who's the person 'in the know'???? Just kidding..........

1. David, I adore you and your work on this site! Words are not enough. Do not take too much blame because of this little slip. Your site makes my day (but clean up the general discussion forum, really).

2. More touring!? Nooooo. It has been too much of this. And I am tired of hearing all this "yeah the tour continues, maybe he will come to my little town now..." These people will not be satisfied until Morrissey has visited every single village on this planet. All this touring is becoming a poor excuse for not recording--seemingly active while doing nothing creative.

I agree that the touring has to stop. I've been thinking that for the past year and a half now. A new single with a new full length (non-recycled) album is long overdue. Hopefully that is in the works, and a real, believable news item will be released that no one can refute.

Bucktooth, The Oye Esteban tour began in October of 1999. You claim to have been hoping for this tour to stop for a 'year and a half.' (since Nov of 1998)...11 months previous to Oye Esteban and 11 months after Malajusted. What gives??

First of all I'd like to give a little praise to David T. for his thankless but oh go gratifying job that he does with this site. Keep up the good work amigo.

Secondly, I would love to see Morrissey play live agin this summer as much as the next person, but not at the expense of a new album. Let's just be thankful for the tour that just concluded and let Moz and the boys have a rest and see if they can get a record deal and some new songs out. I can understand that we as fans are, well fanatical about the man and his music, but let us have priorities people!

Happy belated birthday wishes Moz and here's to you!

I think we all agree that David is doing a superb job on this vital site. Plus, i think that considering this is the INTERNET that eveything you read is not 100% true, come on...this is not the Wall Street Journal report or something. Its a freakin Fan site and i think we're liable for a little gossip or fantasies now and then to keep our spirits ups. It was fun to read about Johnny Depp and all. It seems that the rumor post seem to get the most reaction out of people.

keep up the good work David...

but i'm not condoning (s/c) anyone to report false rumors...but the posts with some evidence such as a link or the words out of a disc jockey are just to be among the others. As Long as people have a source i think that people will accept the news...

The other day my best friend suggested that Morrissey-Solo should become the Mozzers official web-site... I agreed with him of course.. there is no doubt about it... but even if this site doesn't get the that official title.. we all know that there is no other place that we would go for the truth about the Man we so much care about.. I honestly appreciate all the hard work david put into this site.. why else would I have it on my fave places, and check it out every single day..

All of the rumours.....
There would be no moz without a smokescreen. Maybe that's one of the reasons he's happy to let David run 'the' site....just the way it is. David gets little credit for just how good this site is and what a great job it does of keeping a large group of us together, as well as being as clued up on Mozz as we could be. It is style.

I just have to say congratulations to whoever
pulled off the Gary Day/Johnny Depp hoax!
Very impressive! I didn't believe it 100%,
but 80% of me DID get suckered!! haha

Hey, it helped ease the boredom around here,
if nothing else!

Why would some of you not want Moz to tour?
Are you crazy? He can't tour enough for me.
The albums are fantastic, but nothing is as great
as the performance. Now if only he'd play some
new material if he tours this summer. We could pass them around on bootlegs and have a great
time of it.

And, anyway, I don't see why it has to take much
longer for an album to come out, even if he tours. The songs are supposedly written, and I don't think they need to spend too much time in the studio. He can get a single out while he tours, and then the album by fall. Get
on it, Moz!!! In the meantime, we also have the
Johnny Marr/Healers album! Things will pick
up, don't worry.

Oh, sorry, forgot to say, the fact that Gary Day owns a computer or not does not mean necessarily that he cannot post messages here or in any other webpage. Havfine
Porto - Tue, May 16, 2000 at 03:23:42 (PDT) | #26

Well....where to start?

I suppose I'd better come clean straight from the off and let you know that I was responsible for both the Gary Day letter and the anonymous Johnny Depp rumour. It started with me posting a fake message from Gary on the discussion board in an idle moment (and also in protest to some of the non-stories that populated these pages - not your fault I know, but if I see another Salford Lads news report, I'm likely to tear up my West Ham Boys Club T-Shirt and buy a Travis album in protest).

No-one was more surprised than me to log-on again merely a few hours later, and find the letter adopted as the main news item. This set my mind working on over-drive, and I thought I'd submit a news item directly to Dave regarding the duet. The idea of J.D came as I recalled something about the two living close to each other, and that J.D had something of a musical bent. My original idea was to be Terence Stamp, having heard his dulcit tones (I appear to like that phrase) in last years magnificent film 'The Limey'. However, the SLEEPY HOLLOW (not-so) cryptic clue was too tempting for me.

Sorry to have duped everyone, but I hope you'll admit, it was fun for the week or so the story ran, and it was my aim to get the story into the music press, and maybe even the mainstream media.

Apologies to you David - I meant no harm, and my ulterior motive - to elicit a response from the notoriosly reticent Morrissey camp so we'd find out what was happening in lantern-jaw's world, seemed to work.

If you guys are suffering withdrawal symptoms waiting for the new album, there is some excellent new stuff out there right now. If I may be so bold, try 'The Great Eastern' by The Delgados, "Hot Rail" by Celaxico, "Lost Souls" by Doves and "Dongs of Sevotion" by Smog. If you're feeling adventurous, and would like to chill to some mellow hip-hop grooves, you could do a lot worse than Blackalicious's superb "NIA", or "Spectrum" by The Quannum Collective.

In the meantime - it was fun, amigos...

And now, something completely different: the l... (well, sorry, could not prevent myself from doing that). Seriously now, I confess that I resented that affirmation from "somebody who is in the known" (whatever that means). Saying things like "toying with the masses" is legitimizing the state of "faceless, fawning and boring". I've been researching on narcissism for years now (just because I think this subject is interesting, and researching on my own), and in my opinion Morrissey knows all about that, or would not have written the lyrics of "Paint a Vulgar Picture". It's rather shocking, therefore, that someone who is associated with him writes such a phrase to refer to his fans. Not like the person Morrissey is at all (probably Razor agrees with me here). One has to analyse fame, social status, the concept of importance etc., to understand how identity is formed, and how many people would seek social approval by telling others that he/she knows very well someone who is is famous, etc. Well, why bother explaining all this? Morrissey did that SO WELL in "Paint a Vulgar Picture"... So, let's try to be good fans before boasting and spreading mindless rumours. The opposite would just mean that we, Morrissey's fans, don't have a clue about him, ourselves and about the world. And yes, we must cultivate a bit of self-criticism. It's decent.

well, i'll just butt in again, because I'm an expert at picking out liars. I've had years of experience, and I can do it even if the person thinks they are smarter than me.

First, they always screw up the continuity, as with this dude saying he was with Moz around Southpaw. Look at the facts. Moz is not on a record label, and he hasn't even been in the studio, so his "staff" is at an incredibly bare minimum.

Also, there are no "old faces" for him to work with left. He hates the people who did the first Smiths's album. All the rest of the Smith albums were basically produced by themselves. He and Stephen Street hate each other. Winstantly butchered Kill Uncle. Mick Ronson is dead. Steve Lillywhite has a rule of not producing more than 3 albums with the same artist, as I have read he told some fanzine a while back that it was time for Moz to shop it elsewhere to get a breath of fresh air. In otherwords, anyone he brings in will be new.

Second, just because it appears people have no reason to lie, they do it anyway. Yes, as you can see, people intentionally go out of their way to make up bizarre yet "true" stories. They do it for attention or they feel inadequate. Once you accept that, then life is much easier.

Third, they become incredibly vague at the important details. If you talk to them, they change the subject when you start poking around for details. Everything on that page that this guy had written was culminated from everything ever posted here. That's very easy to do.

I dunno, I think it sounds like this bloke is pretty honest. I don't believe for one second that Gary Day wrote the earlier message: It just doesn't make sense, I just wish it wasn't so quite on the Moz front: we're crying out for stuff!!!

MARIBEL: You are so very right! I know, because the bloke that was in the Pink Fairies is an old mate of mine. He was moving to L.A. at the time and was selling off a lot of stuff. Well done and thanks for getting back to me!

HAVFINE: Re: you last post (#52) were you going to type "the larch"? If so, we have even more incommon!!!

Yes, I agree, what is the point in spreading mindless rumours? If one does not feel adequate within one's own skin, telling "tales" will not change a thing - you still have to live with yourself just as you are...also, as Morrissey sang: ACCEPT YOURSELF. And I'd like to add: bugger what anyone else thinks! We are (or have the potential to be) interesting and should not have to pretend otherwise.

Razor: yes, I was going to type "the larch", but then a strange fear gripped me... :)
I agree completely with what you say about identity: it's not the fact that we know someone who is famous, per se, that is going to change the person we are. Now, if we wonder why somebody who believes so much in his/her own fame does not look at us, we could understand the lyrics of "Paint a Vulgar Picture".... By the way, I read somewhere that that title is a quote from Oscar Wilde. Probably from "The Picture of Dorian Gray"?

Havfine: There are those who forget their roots and where they come from that do end up like Dorian Gray; yet they are not able to have a picture to take on all the harmful results of their caprious activities. Indeed, Morrissey is, as you say, not one of those people: He will never forget "those ugly new houses" that are known as council estate housing in England. Remembering one's roots keep one honest and one's soul pure. Morrissey has a brilliant mind and no doubt an equally brillant memory - he will never forget. If there are those who continue to spread rumours about Morrissey's agenda, as you wrote Havfine, "Morrissey's fans, don't have a clue about him, ourselves and about the world." Let's all not try and be Morrissey personal assistant - as I am sure he would have very high expectations, and it would be hard to qualify by just telling him how much we all love him. He knows all too well the dangers of love!
