Miss Truth - June 5, 2000

Moody music icon Morrissey paid a visit to check out the band which his years as lead singer of the Smiths influenced, Gene, at the band's sold-out gig at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. on Friday (June 2). The Moz's presence set off a bit of a frenzy, as many fans of Gene were once (and still are) crazed followers of Morrissey and the Smiths. In the V.I.P section of the club, Gene's Martin Rossiter, Morrissey, and Morrissey's guitarist Alain Whyte shot the shit about life in general before the Moz sped off in his car trailed by a group of screaming fans. Rossiter later said, "We're both fruits, we just taste different."

Gene will play another one-off show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on July 10.

I don't much care for Gene's music, but you have to feel kinda bad for the guy. He plays a show and everyone runs out after Morrissey...I would have felt like crap, imagine if Robert Smith had come to a Morrissey concert and all the fans left screaming and running after his car...

Gene is one of the best bands in the world if you take the time and effort to actually listen to them. Sure, in the beginning they were a little too influenced by The Smiths, but now itīs time to stop comparing...

I was there and "NO" the crowd did not follow Morrissey until after the show. Gene are an awesome band! Great music and great musicians! Lots of people did not care for Morrissey. Gene did wonderful shows and you all are probably mad because you were not there and Morrissey was. Gene is great and so is Morrissey!

Gene is great!

and if you think that comment is funny, you obviously haven't heard enough gene music to judge correctly.

I went to the Wednesday show, and have been to previous Gene concerts. What really irks me are the moz/smiths fans who show up wearing their moz/smiths t-shirts. I counted 10+ moz shirts, and not a single gene shirt. Maybe this is partly Gene's fault for not selling shirts at the show, but some of you idiots need to have a little respect for the band you paid money to see!

Since concert patrons do pay money they have the inherent freedom to display whatever image they want to wear. Perhaps it's really not a big deal and Gene should be thankful that they have these desperate smiths fans who look to them for semblence, or they would not have had the degree of success they have achieved. I'm sure they count their lucky stars when they see pathetic smiths fans going to their shows.

I believe that going to the show alone is enough support, telling people what they should or should not wear to the shows is moronic.

Wear whatever you want to wear, thats your right. Its my right to think you're an idiot for doing so.

It is nice to see some dissension on this matter. Not that I agree with the criticism's of Gene, I happen to think their incredible. But for the pure fact that Morrissey obviously seems to be quite fond of them, and for once...the vast majority of you have developed your own so-called opinions about them rather than act as Morrissey's own little mouth-pieces and voice whatever it is you think he would like to hear!

Anyone who wears the shirt of the band they are seeing to that band's concert is sad and therefore one can assume that Gene's fans have at least a little common sense
