Las Vegas show (10/7) cancelled due to Alain Whyte's back injury
Posted on Fri, Oct 8 1999 at 8:00 p.m. PDT
by David T. <[email protected]>
As you have probably already heard, the Vegas House of Blues show was cancelled last night, word coming at around 7pm.

A statement regarding Alain's condition from an anonymous source:

To dispel rumours and clarify matters, Alain wishes to state that he is resting following a back injury which led him to hospital rather than onto the stage at Las Vegas last night.

He is extremely sorry that the show was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances and very much hopes that immediate medical care will put him back on the road tomorrow.

We all hope so.

The Coachella festival on Saturday is still on as of this posting (Fri. night). Will post if I hear any updates.

I have heard that Morrissey will be on stage at approximately 6:30 in the evening.

Morrissey will not return to Las Vegas on this tour. Too many tour dates in Europe. Goodbye and good luck, Moz.

Yeah, I don't think that Coachella is going to happen...Is it just me or is this a bit odd? Some strange force is keeping Morrissey and Marr apart...why? What is Coachella without Morrissey? This show is going to SUCK!!!

Good news. While on the way back from Las Vegas my friends and I ended up speaking to a few other tour followers at a gas station. They told me that they ran into Morrissey at Caesars palace. And they asked Morrissey whether or not he was going to play at Coachella. And Morrissey's response to them was that the show is still on. This news is current as of Oct. 8, 4:00 pm. Please Alain, get well.

tell me about it! Its not enough that we just get the ticket money back! It cost me alot of money to get there and to stay in a hotel and eat etc etc. I saw him in mandalay bay before the show, he looked great I was very exited. I also saw boz at about 6:10 and he said they were going on at 9:00. How dissapointing. They must know that their fan base is like no other, in that people come from all over to see them. They have to do something to make this up. At least he couldve done an accoustic set or something of that sort. I mean really. A back spazm? take some vicoden and sit in a chair. Now I'm out 800 bucks. Arseholes

Best wishes to Alain & rest of the crew!
This is probably as much a physical blow to Alain, as a mental one to the other guys. I don't think ANYONE of them enjoys cancelling gigs, seeing how the whole band loves the stage and the response they get.
I'd comfort you all if I could - but the rose turned red, and I'm almost dead.

Oh my gosh thank goodness i didnt go to Las Vegas...I would of flown out there to see no one play, but i do hope Alain recovers soon. The best of luck MOZ, I hope this tour is the greatest. And yes...it is time youve returned to your element!! "England for the English." I'm sure most California people know nothing of irony....you are Europe's son....welcome home. Havent you seen what Los Angeles has done to other BRIT stars??? Mainly Dave Gahan's (Depeche Mode's lead singer)life!!!! Los Angeles is for burn-outs!!!

Sit in a chair? Come on, Alain didn't hurt his legs. If you've ever hurt your back muscles, you know you know how painful it is to move the slightest.

Hope Alain picks up and will play Coachella...on my way...

I agree with vulgarpic and daniel that this situation sucks. I paid a lot of money to fly out there (from CT), stay in a hotel, and for food. To refund $30 for my concert ticket is a joke, because that was the least expensive part of the trip. I don't even like to gamble. I would never go to Vegas if Moz were not going to be playing there. The lesson that I have learned from this experience is to never travel a far distance to see the man, or you could get burned.

Hmmm. Morrissey is to play festival that former songwriting partner and guitarist Marr also is to play. Morrissey's current songwriting partner and guitarist conveniently has back spasm a couple days before festival appearance. Does a "forced" reunion seem plausible because Moz urgently needs a guitarist? Manipulation or just hopeful thinking? Well I wonder...

First of all, Morrissey/Marr will NEVER happen. Regardless of how badly the media and his fans may want it to. Secondly, with regards to Alain, I can't believe how ignorant and selfish his "fans" are. Honestly, an acoustic set? Refunds? The show was cancelled due to the fact that Morrissey's band members are not as "replaceable as parts of a broken-down lawnmower."

I hope Alain is okay, but I still smell something fishy. Coechella is on, I know it. The nearest thing to a reunion we are going to get tonight is Morrissey saying something really witty about Johnny Marr on stage, that'll do for me.

Morrissey goodluck with your tour, don't forget about your sexy hometown Los Angeles, come back to Los Angeles because England cannot handle someone like you.

I know all of you are upset about the Vegas show being cancelled but there is no need for you to act out like this. Think about how selfish you are being. And as for you Mauricio, why don't you save your ignorant comments for people who care...if you knew anything about Morrissey you would know that Los Angeles is one of his favorite places to play.

Too bad about Alain, but I don't think his absence made their playing an impossibility -- I mean, the Smiths got by with just one guitar player most of their days! Ask the fans which they would rather have, no show or a show that doesn't sound as good because only one of two guitarists is there, and the votes would've poured in for the latter. Tours involving Morrissey just seem fraught with needless drama....

I am not asking for anyone to turn on their friends and family. In fact I think that's what the whole point was. The people responsible for this fiasco (and it's not the injury that was the fiasco, but the handling of the injury) turned on a thousand or so "friends" and it wasn't like the situation was so traumatic. It's not like someone got shot or something moments before the doors opened. They knew about the possibility the night before! They did nothing. They posted nothing. Where was the consideration?? Respect for others obliges one to tell them about what's going on so others can make informed choices. How hard would this have been, "Attention Morrissey fans. Last night Alain Whyte suffered a back injury that threatens the possibility of this show going on as scheduled. If the show does get cancelled, we will try to reschedule the show or we will refund your money. Please keep in mind that no attempt will be made to contract a replacement guitarist, so if Alain is not feeling better by the time the gates open, the show *will* be cancelled." Those people who did fly and drive in from long distances could have made informed choices on their own to either stay and wait. They could have decided whether or not they wanted to stick it out and gamble on those odds in the city of Lady Luck or to cash their chips and have fun elsewhere. Personally, having already seen him in Tempe, I'd have walked, but I'm not a betting person. My walking would have not have made me wish Alain well any less, and if they show had opened as planned, well then I would have lost. But I'd have done it of my own volition/on my own terms, not on some @#!!!bag promoter's terms. The only reason they waited to tell us was because *they* thought that there was the slightest possibility that the show could go on as planned, and they wouldn't have to suffer any financial losses themselves...or negative backlash. I guess they can have both. The fact that they'd wager so heavily against the odds by not speaking a peep could only be idiocy.

Jesus.. I´ve never seen Morrissey , and I am eager to see him , this thing just make me feel sad and angry about my fellow Moz fans , I agree completely and I ´m just with you in pain Truly Dissapointed...:-(
since I got to this wonderful site I´ve learned that this is quite usual on Morrissey cancelling events at the last minute , and never truly know what is going to happen ..and I think this is sadly unrespectful to people generally.
What leds me to cnclude that something really fishy is happenning and that I might be dissappointed for the show I´ve planned to go in Barcelona ..geeez I´ve evrything ticket, money ..etc... Please don´t disapoint us Morri.....

I just want to say one last time. Everybody makes decesions on how to spend their money. If I choose to fly to Europe and try to see Morrissey in London and something happens and the show doesnt happen can I have a free trip to Europe too? It sounds quite absurd to even think one deserves to have their expenses paid. Listen to what is being said man! I know most of the fans are not this selfish and immature and that only a few that are posting here have this view but its still sad to see. The good news for some of us though, at least we now know where a lot of those morons from the KROQ chat room came from. Read back at some of these prior posts for details. One thing that is so unfair. Somebody said Alain had taken drugs and was in hospital for overdose. Just remember take each of these posts by everybody including this one with a grain of salt, people trying to speculate for reasons for the Las Vegas show that didnt happen is just not necessary. Please just wait until the facts come out before jumping to your conclusions. If one believes what they read here Alain was either a. sitting out voluntarily as a publicity stunt, (as if). b. had a legitimate back injury, (possibly sustained by selfish morons in Santa Barbara jumping at him on stage). c. really had over dosed on drugs. (there is no foundation for this either).
Lastly I've been to many concerts with Alain and Morrissey. For those who have been fortunate enough to be up front you know Alain is quite friendly and seems to really enjoy the fans and vice versa. If anybody from the band ever reads these posts please know the majority of the fans are not like this and are hoping sincerely for you all to live long and healthy and happy lives. You have given us so much, I for one am greatful thank you!

my empathy with Alain - I know what back pain feels like. Hope you feel better soon.

my sympathy with the fans - you have a right to be angry and disappointed, but please remember this was not planned or done on purpose to spite you. you were in vegas and could have had a great time anyways. you didn't have a chance to see morrissey this time around but it's gonna happen someday. please wait. don't lose faith....

Yeah, i was very dissapointed as everyone else..i have been a long time Moz fan, but have never had the oportunity in seeing the man live..i can think of several different occations that extream situations made me miss shows..i was hyped as one could be, with my tix in hand and in line.. then the news hit me, i was at first angry, on the way back home i didnt even want to listen to him, which was still in the cd player...but by the time i got home i ended up anyway...for the last message that was wrote, (thanks)...i am going to keep the faith..

I just got back from the Coachella Festival, and I'd have to agree with Eddie: It was the best concert I've seen Morrissey put on. He was really upbeat and expressed some true empathy with the crowd. He even paid tibute to his Mexican-American fans (I think every Mexican high school kid in L.A. loves Morrisey) by exclaiming "muchas gracias, MAY-HEE-CO!" Thus, from the way he appeared on stage, it seems like morrisey is really loving this tour...and I felt the love.

Muchas Gracias, Steven.

I'm disappointed in the hatefulness that so many people seem to feel towards others at this site. I don't think the use of the "F" word is appropriate at all and is completely immature. Sometimes things don't work out perfectly in this world and money is often lost. For those that wanted to inject Alain with pain medication just so your money wouldn't go to waste, I suggest you take a long look at your priorities and beliefs. Human life is always more important than money and there is no room for hate.
