Spencer definitely NOT in the band

Thanks to David Edge for the following:

Well, I ran into Spencer Cobrin on Mott St. in New York City over the weekend. He is definitely not in the band anymore. He wouldn't really give me all of the details, but... he said that it was a very bad situation... and that he was disappointed that he wasn't going to be on this tour. He alluded to a lot of inner turmoil in the band, and that he was at least partially glad that it was over. He has a new band called SONNENBLUME, which means "sunflower" in German. They will be playing at Acme Underground In NYC on September 4th.

He was a good drummer but I don't care for the way he licked the ice cream cone in the "We hate it when are friends become successful" video. Why
couldn't he be cool like Alain? Who agrees? OUT!

Morrissey's probably scared that Spencer will sue him. :)

I wonder why Morrissey has such bad luck with the rhythm section. Mike, Andy, Gary, Spencer ... catfights and court battles all over the place. Morrissey must have something against bass and drums.

How sad after playing for so many years. He wrote a killer b-side and was "lost" soon after. Very suspicious.

Our sympathies are with you. You can drive my car anytime.

would you like beer with that? - Tue, Aug 24, 1999 at 16:13:06 (PDT) | #7

Well, I'm pretty sure he dosen't like drum and bass.

how can I get in touch w/ Spencer? I want to ask him to compose a song with me (if Moz doesn't mind of course.) who is that person who has a Spencer page? maybe she'd know.

I love spencer's ice cream licking. I also like him alot. Much more than alain. I am really disappointed that spencer is not going to be with them. Definately would like to know why. damn.

Too bad for Morrissey. I thought Spencer was a good drummer and it seems that he's a good songwriter as well.
Who's going to replace him? Where's Woodie Taylor these days?

Wait, Spencer was actually the one behind such beautiful songs as "Wide to Receive" and "Lost" - I had hoped he would contribute to the new solo-album. Maybe he will, I sure hope so.

Morrissey always had an interest in drummers, and, at least in his early days, it always seemed to be the skill of the drummer that redeemed a crappy band in his eyes. So Morrissey doesn't have something against drummers. Perhaps he's too stringent in his expectations of them? - Ryan

I loved the way he licked that ice cream cone. So very homoerotic, just like the band itself. He can lick my ice cream cone any day!

Chris and James,
You guys are both gross. I wanted to take the
video and chuck it at my neighbors loud mouth kids. But of course I couldn't go through with it. The Malady Lingers....OUTTTTTTTTTTT!

Hi everyone, I'm the girl with the Spencer fanzine... thank you Morrissey, this tour is bitter sweet indeed. Rip my heart out with a spoon, why don't you. Right everyone: if you go to David's 'Fanzines' section I think you might find a page about my Spencer fanzine 'Operations'. If you go to my website you'll find my fanzine 'Loved & Lost', including in full the letter Spencer wrote me having seen 'Operations' on here. Spencer didn't leave a return address (unfortunately but understandably) but SPENCER, IF YOU'RE OUT THERE, WRITE ME AGAIN!!! I only made nine copies of the original zine, which I gave to friends, but I've had a great response since - somewhat amazingly considering his obscurity, it seems Spencer has a cult following. WE LOVE YOU SPENCE - BRING SONNENBLUME TO BRITAIN!!!
Oh and PS - I LOVED the way he licked that Cornetto - and I'm not the only one :)

Will anyone in the NYC area be attending Spencer's show?

Oh, and for MY two cents...I LOVED the ice cream-licking part, and Morrissey's breakdown into laughter - priceless!

Forgot to ask: will Spencer be drumming in this band? I could've sworn that, in the letter he sent to Alison, he mentioned playing guitar and singing. Did I remember correctly?

Spencer was the Beast drummer Morrissey has ever worked with and its a shame they will have to bring in someone new (and probably less a drummer)!

Morrissey probably decided to get rid of Spencer when he saw that letter. No unauthorized communications with fans, please. No self-promoting shenanigans, now, not around Morrissey.

ok, so you guys are a little too hung up on the ice cream(however, it was rather hilarious).
anywho, it's a shame to see spence go. he was one hell of a drummer, and not a bad songwriter to boot. best of luck to you spence.

I think it's a shame Spencer is out: the B-sides to "Roy's Keen" were co-written with him, and they're two of the best b-sides I've ever heard.I do agree that the ice cream cone bit on "we hate it when our friends become successful" was @#!!!.

Pity, Spencer was the hottest lad yet. My rewind button got the best of my Malady video...catching the ice cream licking part over and over and over and over. Spencer made Morrissey smile with his licking...that was beautiful. Farewell, Spencer, my Love.
