Why is Bona Drag not a choice in the poll? I really like that album.

Easily Your Arsenal. The most origanal album he will ever do. Geez, there must really be nothing going on in the land of Moz for this to be the update!

Very difficult to choose a favorite, I personally think all of them (Bona Drag included) are wonderful in their own way. If pressed to choose a favorite, I'd say "Your Arsenal." What a wonderful blend of emotion, lyric and melody. I'm just pining for the next release.

bona drag is not on the list because it was not a true new album, just b-sides and other odd tracks. just like 'world of morrissey' and 'my early burglary years'

Strange with the low ratings for Maladjusted. In my opinion it's his second best album, only bettered by Vauxhall.

The Warrenmeister is definitely in the "in crowd"
on this one. I voted for Vauxhall and I. I've
never been more excited about getting home from school to listen to a CD than this one. Speedway rocks. Can someone tell me if it is pronounced
VOX or VOE hall? Troy's sister Emily and I have been fighting over this for years. Peace ouTTTTTTTT

At the moment, Southpaw is my favorite album. Not that it influences my choice or anything, but I think that Southpaw is exactly how the "new" smiths would sound like, a rocking sound coupled with simple lyrics yet very insightful if thoughtfully analyzed.

O.K. here it goes, for ME Vauxhall and I it's the best. And not just because I like it better, but,
we all have to admit that the album has a special
taste, something different, something so powerf-
ull that really makes you believe the man was com-
unicating with all of us, on the other hand, isn't
wonderfull to chose from all those great albums?

Viva Hate, then Vauxhall & I. It's a hard choice. As for Southpaw Grammar, I really like the music, but the lyrics are weak. On this one,Boz and Alan rock, Morrissey doesn't.

Maybe there should be a second favourite poll. Everyone seems to like Vauxhall (like I do) or Viva Hate. Maybe they're the best selling ones too...?

Dear Warren, it's pronounced like "Vox-hall"! I think Morrissey referred to that suburb in South London, which is in fact quite closely located to Battersea (remember:"some hope and some despair"). But Vauxhall is as well the English name for the German automobile enterprise OPEL.

I definitely think that Bona Drag should be on the list of albums to choose from. It is probably the best one next to Your Arsenal.

This was a very hard decision btwn Viva & Vauxhall but I went with Viva. Suedehead, Last Night on M..., Alsatian Cousin, Bengali... so dynamic both in music and lyrics. But "Why don't you find out..." and "Speedway" rock. Know what i'm sayin'?

What about best LIVE MOZ song, since he'll be in concert soon? - "November Spawned..." without a doubt.

See you in Santa Barbara & Coachella.

vauxhall and i is just a play on the film/book? withnail and i. vauxhall is a tube station in london, the movie is a movie from england.

anyway, your arsenal hands down. vauxhall might be nicer to listen to, viva hate might have a really enchanting sound, southpaw grammar might be curiously interesting, but your arsenal is just so damn good.

I think that everyone who has slagged off "Southpaw Grammar" should give it a second listen. I think it was very brave of Moz and the Lads to step away from the successful "Vauxhall And I" formula, and try something radically different. Brilliant album, very sonic, very powerful.

Are You Kidding??????
Vauxhall is a good album, however, I believe it was the beginning of the end for our dear friend. Everything after Vauxhall is ...well pretty bad - except for a few tracks.

Viva Hate and anything with Stephen Street
is far better than the others!!!!

Viva Hate
(Bona Drag - if it counted)
Your Arsenal
Vauxhall
Kill Uncle
Maladjusted
Southpaw (ugly ugly album)

Oh God-this was quite a little dilemma; both Vauxhall and I and Your Arsenal have to rate up there, but i think I gotta go with 'Your Arsenal'-its just got a truly awesome mix of rock(abilly) numbers and more introspective (and truly moving) cuts (e.g., Seasick...). By the way, anyone interested in joining a Smiths/Mozzer tribute band in the Austin, TX area, lemme know...:)

How could anyone vote for Southpaw? There is a reason this is the only Moz album that one can find in the used section of a record store. It makes very ill when I listen to the transformation from orchestral to guitars in "Teachers...". As for you silly fools who think that this is what the Smiths would sound like if they reunited- You are sadly mistaken. Though Boz is good, he not in the same league as Marr. Southpaw isn't even close to Johnny's style.

Vauxhall is great, Southpaw is terrible, Maladjusted is underrated! It's such a welcome return after such a one-dimensional album. I love Trouble Loves Me. Also, the B-sides to the Maladjusted singles are the best! I Can Have Both is one of my favourite tracks, although i don't know why myself...

I would have to say Viva Hate is my favorite Moz album, with Your Arsenal a very close 2nd. Just for the record, I'd still take The Queen is Dead over any of the solo stuff though.

All I can say is that "Southpaw Grammar" is definitely the #1 Morrissey album - I think he has never been so desperately at it as with this one... I mean, "The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils" is certainly eleven minutes too short... As for the worst, I must admit I hardly listen to Kill Uncle and Maladjusted, they´re just lacking in energy.

Karsten Runge <[email protected]>

Well, I gotta go with Viva Hate then Vauxhall. But if you listen to 'Live in Dallas' or any bootleg from that era, it seems that the 'live' versions of 'Kill Uncle' really rock.

It's just interesting to see what different things people like.

Kill Uncle is very under-rated - "Driving your girlfriend home" and "(I'm) the end of the family line" are absolutely majestic

N. Kimberley <[email protected]>
Liverpool - Tue, Aug 24, 1999 at 16:43:46 (PDT) | #34

I voted for Vauxhall, though it was a tough choice. I definitely agree that the live versions of many of the "Kill Uncle" songs are far superior to the studio versions (I'm watching Live in Dallas as we speak). As for "Southpaw," it is true that it is the only one that I see in the used bins around here. "Reader meet Author" is one of my favorite songs ever though. I probably listen to "Bona Drag" the most, but I understand why it was left off the list.

Although its mine, I always knew Southpaw was not everyones favorite. I am so suprised however at how many of you really think so little of it. In its defense, as an alblum, no other Morrissey alblum bleeds so much energy, dare I say passion. No other alblum is so much of a complete work, every song fitting in to the overall alblum. I think perhaps only Viva Hate is the only other record which works well as a whole like Southpaw does. Vauxhall is a fine alblum but Southpaw is just better. Morrissey dosent rely on any formulas or cliches, instead he makes a really original alblum. I think if any one else had made it, it would have been an instant hit. I guess people want Morrissey to stay the same. Its the intellgent as opposed to the commercial alblum. Just listen to it again, and again. My favorite is last track, it reminds me of "Never had no one"
it just sums up "lonliness" perfectly, its a very obvious and honest alblum. Hopefully Morrissey will return to a Southpaw like style on the next alblum. "The girl of your dreams, is sad and is all alone, the girl.. is sad ...and is all alone..

well, i figure i may as well put my two cents in, and post my first comment ever, as i only discovered this site a week or two ago, just in time for the tour news to start. anyway, hello. how could anyone argue with VAUXHALL AND I?? i agree bona drag is a wonderful collection, and your arsenal is probably the second best studio album, but YA contains 3 or 4 throw-away humour tracks......VAUXHALL is just one great, personal, beautiful song after another. and speedway...oh, oh...it makes me cry....beautiful.....

They are all great, and they all have special meanings to me. I was thinking about how I relate each album to a different time or event in my life. Ahhh memories......listening to "Viva Hate" on the way to the park with Mr. McNeill, playing "Your Arsenal" after skimboarding everyday with Paul Brousseau, and losing my virginity to a lovely young woman(name witheld) in 1995 while listening to "Vauxhall & I".

I like all the albums, but you can probably see that "Vauxhall & I" has an extra special meaning to me.

Thanks for the memories Moz. You're the best

It's close between Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I. Vauxhall is a beautiful record; I was also happy to hear no rockabilly. But Moz rocks on YA. And Mick Ronson is great, so how can you lose?

Kill Uncle is underated, though. And if you remember Morrissey's appearance on Carson (Ed McMahon announcing him - unbelievable!), how can you not have a soft spot for that album....

Vaxhaul & I was a play on Withnail & I? Ha! I kind of suspected as much. By the way, the movie is absolutely great. It's about two out of work, British actors who live in depravity and decide to go out to the country for a change. It's really hilarious and definately worth seeing. By the way, Lincoln if you're reading this, can I have your email address? Seeing as we both live in West Palm Beach, I'm sure you know how few Moz fans we have down here in this sweltering filth bucket. Oh, and down with 103.1 The Buzz! *spits on Florida radio*

Hey Guys,
I'm changing my plea to guilty. I'm changing my
vote from Vaux and I to Kill Uncle. I listened to it last night with some chick and I forgot how great that album really is, trust me when I say this is a great make out CD!! So David if you get a second will you take one vote off Vaux and move it to Kill Uncle? Thanks "Your taxi is here my dear."

Appears as if I fall in the Kill Uncle minority, which surprises me since it contains some true Morrissey gems: the tongue-in-cheek mirth of "King Leer"; the encouraging "Sing Your Life"; the rollicking "Tony"; and not least of all "There Is a Place in Hell". I know the album has been critically lambasted, but I (wrongly) assumed it would have been held in higher regard by true admirers.

Then again, Viva Hate and Vauxhall aren't bad records either.

I am having a problem remembering what site I am talking on so this was accidently posted on another area of this website and I meant it for this one: To all of the negatives regarding Kill Uncle - I agree it was a lighter album than his other releases - but that does not make it unappealing.
However I have seen a few people come around and remember what a good one this was - But Warren - who would make out with you??

I think I have a favorite from EVERY album. It would be extremely unfair of me to pose such a trivial opinion.
I wouldn't mind knowing what his reply was, however. I am a musician and I would be interested in his take on this question from a musical standpoint.

CT - Wed, Aug 25, 1999 at 11:01:21 (PDT) | #55

I know I just wrote but in scrolling down to see if my comment was actually posted I read through some of your comments regarding his albums.
For one, to critique his albums like you are some kind of newspaper column is borderline hilarious.
Why are you even partaking in Morrissey polls or his site in the first place if you have so many negative things to say about his music.
And to the person who made a comparison between Marr and Boz, c'mon.
They are both wonderful. They both have a very unique style, and are worlds apart in those styles, but that doesn't make one better than the other. That is such a childish comment.I can't even believe you had the audacity to say it.
To Morrissey (and your band) I apologize on behalf of those who don't have the respect for your work that you so richly deserve.
Cheers!

My favorite Moz album is Vauxhall & I because it seems like Moz really poured his heart out on every song. "Spring-Heeled Jim" and "Speedway" are my faves.
Viva Hate is also a tremendous work of art. It really is tough to choose, because they are all good.

THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT YOUR ARSENAL IS THE BEST ALBUM MORRISSEY HAS EVER WRITTEN. THE MUSIC AND THE LYRICS JUST KICK BUTT. IT WAS NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY FOR A REASON AND THAT IS THE REASON. I GIVE A LOT OF CREDIT TO MOZ AND THE BOYS ON THAT ONE BUT MY HAT GOES OFF TO MICK RONSON WHO DEFINETELY MADE THIS ALBUM COME ALIVE. THE PRODUCTION OF THE ALBUM IS PERFECT.AND FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW WHO MICK RONSON IS WELL, THATS TO BAD.....

well, first let me confess: i`ve never heard southpaw. i`m seeking desperately, its just never on the mega-stores (i know, try the smaller ones, ok). my fave is of course YOUR ARSENAL.
i think i`m a bit more objective than others because i bought all albums in the last two years, and i have no emotions realted to the different time i`ve heard each and every one. all albums contain great lyrics, and great music on some tracks. viva hate? a bit too poppy, with some tired tracks that spoiles the fun like "bengali" "ordinary boys" "dial a cliche" and "margaret".vauxhall? there`s just a too long wait from "why dont you find" till "speedway" i dont like slow songs, unless they say something powerful. otherwise they make me fall asleep.
maladjusted was a not-sp-successful attempt to be hip and 90`s, but the lyrics were great.
your arsenal, therefore, is the fastest, most melodic, most rackabilly, most passionate record morrissey made since "the queen is dead".
well excuse me!
p.s. lisa, many people here think marr is better than boz, and that some of moz`s work was crap.
please learn to accept different opinions, won`t ya?

I keep hoping his next one will be my favorite, but I've been disappointed too many times. I voted for Viva, while not perfect it encompasses everything you've every loved about Moz in one album. Its also a sentimental favorite. Vauxhall's beautiful too but the production seemed a little drab or muddled sounding. I agree with Daniel that Southpaw could have been brilliant if Moz had bothered to participate. Dagenham Dave (repeated ad infinitum) is a poor excuse for a chorus.

i don't see how vauxhall is anyones favorite? granted it is good...but its definitly not the best..., with the exception of a few gems like the more you ignore me, why don't you find out for yourself and billy bud...the album is quite boring. its really something i listen to when i'm trying to fall asleep. and plus...woodie taylor plays like a wuss compared to spencer. its a damn shame that he's not gonna be in the band anymore. and as for southpaw, i don't think its really that bad....you have to admit the songs totally rock. and the good songs like the operation and best friend on the payroll make up for the crap like the teachers...., and dagenham dave. i don't see why they didn't put nobody loves us and you must please remember on it. if they did...i probably would have said it was my favorite. but for now...your arsenal definitly takes the cake.

Kill Uncle is such a gem. I believe it to be the only Morrissey album that works as a cohesive 'album'; there is a definite mood which lingers through the piece. . .his other records are generally a collection of great songs/singles which is fine. . .however, judging what is his best _album_ one must take the above in consideration.

I think Your Arsenal is by far the best album he made. Songs like "Tomorrow" or "The National Front Disco" are so wonderfully brilliant that you can´t stop singing them. The cover photo is one of the best Morrissey pictures I´ve ever seen.

Second best album is Kill Uncle . Rather short, but with my favourites "Sing Your Live", "Driving Your Girlfriend Home" and "Our Frank".

I´m looking forward to seeing once more on stage.

Well, obviously Vauxhall & I is the best.
I totally hated Southpaw when it first came out, but I tried it again recently and got quite into it. It's a shame the lyrics are a bit weak.
I now think Maladjusted is the worst, and Your Arsenal is the most overrated.
Viva Hate seems so long ago it almost exists in a world of its own, and I actually feel Kill Uncle is quite underrated.

And that's all I have to say! Cheers :-)

I have yet to get "Southpaw Grammer"
and "My Early Burglary Years", I think that's what
it's called. I can't wait to buy them, I want them
so much!!!

I love all of Morrissey's albums, but if I was to give advice to someone who wanted to expierence the whole Morrissey thing. I would advise them to listen to "Your Arsenal".

I don't see why any Morrissey fan would think that Kill Uncle or Southpaw are bad cd's???????? The live versions of the songs from the kill uncle album are awsome.

I'm surprised to see so many sprining up in defense of Southpaw Grammar! It is brilliant, though I like Vauxhall and Maladjusted better (and possibly Your Arsenal). How about a poll for top five or ten songs? My five are The More You Ignore Me, Southpaw, Alma Matters, Jack the Ripper and Maudlin Street. Still, there is nothing quite like I Know It's Over. sorry for the ramblings...

O.K. HERE IT GOES. THE REASON SOME MOZ FANS DON'T LIKE "SOUTHPAW GRAMMER" IS BECAUSE, I DON'T THINK THEY GET AROUND TO SOUTHPAW .........THAT'S TRACK #8, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO STILL HAVE THE CD AND HAVEN'T TURNED IT INTO A NEET LOOKING MOZ COASTER. THE CD I THINK IS TRULY MORRISSEY.... SOPHISTICATED AND VERY GOOD!!!!! HEY DON'T GET ME WRONG "VAUXHALL AND I" IS VERY GOOD, BUT I LOVE SOUTHPAW. ONE MORE THING A TRUE MOZ FAN ....NO A TRUE FAN LOVES ALL OF HIS FAVORITE ARTIST WORK. I LOVE ALL.....ALL OF HIS WORK FROM THE SMITHS TO THE PRESENT. HE'S ALL I LISTEN TO I LOVE HIM.....

In my view Maladjusted tends to be the best Moz album in modern times, clearly Satan Rejected my Soul really makes me feel good about listening to morrisey!!! (there's nothing wrong with you)

"southpaw" is awful, beau. there's a reason it wasn't successful...for an album with so few tracks and so few lyrics, it's painfully long.

and once again, for those of you who didn't know who morrissey was when "bona drag" was released, it's not a proper album, but a compilation.

a note to RIPPR5150: being nominated for a grammy says nothing about how good an album is. look at the other "artists" nominated for grammys and say that again with a straight face...

I don't understand why no one likes Southpaw! It's my second favorite behind Vauxhall... definitely the most daring and unique thing he's done so far.

I like how everyone comments on how bad the lyrics are on Southpaw but they never mention how atrocious the lyrics to songs like "You're the One For Me Fatty" are. "You're the one for me fatty, you're the one i really really love...etc" repeat chorus throughout entire song. And someone mentioned that "Dagenham Dave...(repeat over and over) as a chorus is unacceptible, but what about "We Hate It..."'s chorus of, "It's really laughable ha ha ha ha ha (repeat laughing noise)" or Suedehead repeating "I'm so sorry." over and over. No one would dispute that those are classics.

Your Arsenal is a great album but a little overrated. Kill Uncle is a great album (Sing Your Life, anyone?). Vauxhall is beautiful. Viva Hate is classic. Maladjusted is better than you think. And Southpaw Grammar is fantastic. I guess what I'm saying is it's impossible to choose a favorite when every album is completely different. Cheers.

Kill Uncle's Music and Lyrics are the best!!!
Bona Drag#2 Viva Hate#3 Your Arsenal#4
There is a great wall between these albums and what followed. Vauxhall is OK but shouldn't even
be mentioned in this discussion by any one who has good taste in Morrissey's music. Southpaw
and Maladjusted contain lyrics that Morrissey
pulled out of his arse, and he knows it.

Well la de da if Bona Drag was a compilation. Come off it! It has, with only three or so exceptions, songs that can be found on NO studio album. Please don't feel the need to comment if that number is incorrect, the point is the same.

Viva Hate rules merely on the coat tails of Suedehead alone! The rest of the album is perfection. It took Nobody Loves Us (a full 10 years later) to emulate the energy and cheek that Suedehead gives off.

It was definitely a tough choice between Vauxhaul
and Viva Hate. I had to go with Vauxhaul because
its strong all the way through. But damn, Alsatian Cousin and Breakup the Family are brilliant.

Bona Drag and Kill Uncle are God Awful!! Terrible.

A very difficult choice for me because i love all the albuns the live albuns the video tapes, everythink that morrissey do. But Vauxall repesents much more to me that's only the reson of my chice. But i hear every single day all the albuns that are im my car in the jukebox.for the best single of ever my choice is Boy Racer because the live song Why don't you find out for your self. Bye and don't forget this musics they Sing Your Life................

I've listened incessively to all the Morrissey CD's you've got listed and although there is much disagreement, I still think "Southpaw " is the best from that list. Not to sound cheesy, but "it says SOMETHING to me about my life!" I can really identify with his words(especially "Do your best and don't worry", "Best friend on the payroll" and "Southpaw" because they remind me of certain people I know who've been in those situations, including me!). That's what it is really all about isn't it? Real life experience and feelings sincerely validated by a man whom I owe much thanks to for helping me through tough times in my life through his thoughts and words. Of course, "Southpaw" is just my opinion, and I respect the views of everyone else here, simply because I don't believe there IS such thing as a "bad" Morrissey album! Hope you all have a great week! And if anyone has any views on "Rare Tracks", lets hear them! My fav is "The edges are no longer parallel".

What about Bona Drag? Are you bastards on cheap crack? Hello Mcfly! Take a look at the amazing tracks on this album. I am amazed that someone claiming to be a fan of Morrissey would neglect this album as an option on the "Best Morrissey album poll". I fail to see how such an oversight could occur. I would seriously consider running this poll again. You are obviously failing to be a true fan of the man and you should really think about pulling your head out of your rectum and smell the coffee and not your own feces. I hope I have made my point you numpty.

True fan of Morrissey

Viva Hate/Education in Reverse has a constant beauty that no other Morrissey album has. Stephen Street worked so closely with The Smiths, and it shines through on this album. Suedehead is up there with the best of The Smiths songs, and in my opinion, was intended to be one.

I personally gave my vote for "Kill Uncle". It contains some of my most favorite songs. It has that great Morrissey echo with some good rockabilly egde.

But overall I'm all for Morrissey & The Smiths ...

Definately "Viva Hate"!!!!!! Anything that Stephen Street co-wrote with Moz was far superior than the other crap he's put out since!! "Vauxhall"- a total yawn-fest, "Kill Uncle"- a pain to listen, "Southpaw"- OUCH!, "Your Arsenal"- a good attempt but seemed rather empty...
STEPHEN STREET RULED!!

Viva Hate definitely the best!!!!! Where else can you hear lyrics, "The silver-studded rim that glistens and an ankle star that blinds me".
Actually every Mozzer album has moving songs such as Asian Rut, Begali in platforms, and National Front Disco

Hey, how come nobody has come up with Vauxhall ("VAW-") as the french guy who owned whorehouses all over Europe in the 18th century or something? This seems to me more Morrissey's wry style.
