Johnny Marr to perform at Coachella Festival with Beck (rumor)
Posted on Fri, Aug 6 1999 at 8:51 a.m. PDT
by David T. <[email protected]>
From Gerald Acuna:

While listening to Richard Blade's flashback lunch on KROQ (106.7fm), here in Los Angeles, Richard mentioned that Johnny Marr is going to perform with Beck at the Coachella Music Festival the Opening Night. Curiously enough, that is the same night Morrissey is set to open. Richard later goes on to mention how it would be a treat if Morrissey and Marr teamed up again for old times sake. Nevertheless, the Coachella Music Festival is going to be a moment not to forget in Morrissey fan history.

Update (8/7): Looks like a rumor rather than a fact, according to this note from Jose Maldonado.

Well that about seals it for me. Even the POSSIBILITY of Marr and Moz together again is worth the trip! A full Smiths reunion may be a bit far fetched, but I have to say I don't know how Marr and Moz can resist this chance to shine again!

c'mon people!the site of moz&marr alone at the same festival,is enough to get me to go.say what you will, but, ill bet they'll not only acknowledge each other, but, wouldnt be surprised if they did a few tunes together too.i think it will, all those non-doubters out there,go to the show&see for yourselves.i hope that that means a possible smiths reunion is in the works?god,it would really be the greatest day on earth.lets cherish this moment people, not, ruin it.enjoy this show for all its not even going to the second day show.i only care to see morrissey.see you all there, jeff

Okay, come on. If Johnny is going to be playing with Beck there is no possible way he could resist the blinding temptation to play with Morrissey. I mean, just think of how crazy every one would get if he were to walk out on that stage with Moz. I don't think Moz still harbors any remarkably ill feelings towards Johnny, either. But based on recent events with the other 2 members of the Smiths, I certainly wouldn't count on a Smiths reunion. However, we all know how Morrissey is and he would probably get a big kick out of just teasing us with the idea that he might play with Johnny. He probably wouldn't do it just because we all want it to happen. That bastard.

I get goose bumps just thinking about the chance of a brief reunion...I can picture it now...sunset in SoCal; Moz and the band have just played 45 minutes of material spannig Moz's sparkling back-catalogue...lights out, then out of the darknes comes 'How Soon is Now' with the power of 3 of Rox best guitarists (Boz, Alain and John) united in a wall of sound that makes Beck decide he'd better give them an extra half an hour so the fans don'r tear down the place!

Moz & Marr together again? That definately does not "Paint a Vulgar Picture" in my head! More like...."October Spawned A Monster" reuinion in the desert! You don't even have to "Ask" me if I'm going!

South Beach - Fri, Aug 06, 1999 at 12:32:36 (PDT) | #17

I don't think Morrissey and Marr will play together, though I wish they would. Especially since everybody wants them to. There is just no way.

I think moz knows i exist and hates me!! (yes, wierd paranoia...) I will have a one month old baby on this occasion, and be stuck in London engorged and overtired...of course moz & marr will play together for a one off....he's doing it to spite me!!! So, all moz fans have my fate to thank for this most exciting once in a lifetime occurance which i will miss. I bet he's just jealous as i will have a man in my life that i love more than baby boy...(i've seen his 'bits' on the scan)!!! So thank me!!!

So the next soul that gets to meet the man, please put in a word for me, and tell him that i am truly disappointed that he can't wait till i am able to go to such an event, or at least put in creche facilities...or provide a motorcycle au pair boy to look after my little one...(and a venue slightly closer to London than one in the states).

Alright clones here is my take and I think you
will all have to agree with this. Marr wants to
play with Moz. Moz wants to be played with by Marr. However neither has the humility even for the sake of art to break down for one night and jam together for 20 or 30 minutes. Thats that someone give me a take that doesn't suck. Rack that call. Out............

i suppose i could say that since such a brilliant experience is happening to this morrissey fan (me), then morrissey & johnny are trying for me to make it up to the rest of their fans by providing an experience that won't quite measure up to mine, but an exciting one none-the-less!!!....

just using my experience to let mozzer fans know that it is more than likely that their dreams will come true (the irony), just as this summer has been unusually warm and enjoyable in the UK for everyone but me due to the fact pregnant women notoriously suffer in the heat....and i have/am!!

If both Moz and Marr may feel to proud to ask the other to play one for old time's sake, don't you think KROQ would STILL TRY to make this happen??? I'm sure KROQ would like nothing better... record it... and have all bragging rights. Do you think they'd at least give in to that?

Ok, here is what we should do to try to at least bring them out. when Morrissey comes out on stage evryone should chant this: MORRISSEY-JOHNNY, MORRISSEY-JOHNNY, MORRISSEY-JOHNNY, MORRISSEY-JOHNNY....and so on. And when Johnny along with Beck comes out on stage we should chant this: JOHNNY-MORRISSEY, JOHNNY-MORRISSEY, JOHNNY-MORRISSEY, JOHNNY-MORRISSEY....and so on. Lets remeber this at the festival. If anyone's going to the Beverly Center-THE WHEREHOUSE, to buy their tickets I'll be there waiting in line since 6 am. I'll be the guy with the Morrissey haircut.

You're not the only one who likes Boz and Alan. It'd be 'interesting' to see Marr and Moz jam again, but having Alan and/or Boz take a hike wouldn't be right. Marr might have the best guitar moments in Moz' career but Alan/Boz have the more impressive body of work.

Marr...ahh but only if, you're really interested.

There are several of us Moz fans here in Winnipeg, but I'm probably the biggest. :) (And I probably know every single one of the fans too.)

As for the "other stuff" you said about being perfectly happy with Boz and Alain: I'm not. Morrissey needs Johnny and vice-versa. Let's bring them back together! They need each other! I hope it happens...someday...:)

Johnny and Moz could not play at the same gig and not play a few songs together. Or even one song would be good. They don't hate each other or anything! Do it for US, boys!

Wouldn't it be nice to hear ...

Moz: "would you please welcome to the stage Mr Johnny Marr!!!"

Somebody please TAPE this concert and put it up in realaudio. I am poor and cannot go myself (plus I am afraid of Tool fans), otherwise I would not be encourging something horrible and immoral like bootlegging.

This is a really curious thing - the possibility of Marr and Morrissey reuniting. It does seem plausable, though. A few months ago when that Linda McCartney (sp?) tribute happened, Marr joined the Pretenders for a version of Meat Is Murder. Chrissy Hynde said that she'd tried to contact Morrissey to get him to come join the tribute, but hadn't been able to get ahold of him. It sounds like Chrissy and, maybe Marr, was trying to get something brewing then. So, maybe now, a few months later, its all been sorted. We'll see....

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing.Moz and Jonny at the same show same day and probably 2 hrs. inbetween them. First I thought what would they say to each other? Who would speak first? Would they at all do anything? Now I'm a little skeptical, Is KROQ trying to pull something off that no one ever thought would happen in this life time again (Moz and Marr reunion). Or could it be that their saying that Jonny will be there to get all us Moz fans thinking we might get lucky and hope that there is going to be a reunion. When infact Jonny might not even be there.

I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and I don't have any body that would want to take a trip out to L.A. because I don't know anyone around here who even knows who Morrissey is. Besides I never would want to be in L.A. I just think it's a dangerous place. As much as I would love to see Morrissey live I'm looking forward to the new album even more.

I have just posted an unreasonably long letter on the discussion board but since I dont' know if anyone will read it, I will put my message in a nutshell here. I feel I must be heard or I will die.

On Johnny and Morrissey reuniting, don't hold your breath. Please understand that I do love our Mozzer so much. I have been lucky enough to meet him on a couple of occasions here in LA and the dear man exudes his legend everywhere he breathes. He's quite cute as well. In a rugged sort of way (he's come a long way since the Smiths hasn't he?).

Anyway, that said, Johnny's fame, career, and most importantly his RELEVANCE at the moment makes Morrissey look like nothing more than a popular independent local band. Johnny is at the top of his game right now whether or not some of you dislike his current projects. The same can not be said of our Moz by any stretch of the imagination.

I don't like saying this, but if Johnny were to begin writing with Moz again, it would be extremely charitable of him to do so.

Amongst people who know, Johnny is the biggest and best guitarist on the planet right now and has been floating right at the top since he appeared on the scene in late '83. That's a long @#!!!ing time to be where he's been and continues to be and most likely will remain until the day his guitars go on the auction block.

We all love Morrissey's music here but I feel it's very fair to deem his career as being on life support with the plug firmly in Morrissey's own hand.

Boy Racer--You need to wake up. You are NOT the only person in the Pittsburgh area who knows about Morrissey. I have seen and met him several times, and I LIVE in Pittsburgh.

- Sun, Aug 08, 1999 at 10:01:48 (PDT) | #53

I personally would not buy a plane ticket for a possible reunion because people's imaginations are running away with themselves. Morrissey wore a black shirt in one video two years ago. Nobody has mentioned this as being a trend for what he still wears to this very day. It's not like he was spotted hanging around Beck.

Then, the fact that they happen to possibly be in the same building during a concert, and happen to be in LA right now: There were many times when they were not living that far from each other in Manchester, London, etc, and still never put an album together.

There is nothing really there that you could say, "this is going to really happen." It's pretty much wishful thinking filled in by a few coincidences.

And I suppose there may not be any more American dates announced for a while. Then, use that as your excuse to go. I'd rather have to scrape up a few hundred dollars to go to California instead of over $1,000 for a trip to Europe and have that possibly be cancelled.... Yes, Europe is much more intriguing, I have to admit....

I'm wide awake. Look it just gets on mine nerves that the only person I listen to that people know is Sarah McLachaln. Everyone I know, know who I listen to The Smiths/Moz, The Cure, Sarah, Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Belle and Sebastian, Peter Gabriel I'll stop there. I've introduced these people to everyone I know, but they still insist that I have really bad taste for music. I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE INTHE BURGH who listens to "music" and not a bunch of garbage.

Sometimes I just sit back and laugh at all the people I know. I remember back when I was in 5th grade I used to listen to Heavy Metal and I was told that I worshiped satan. In 9th grade Iwas still listening to the same groups like Slayer, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Pantera ect.. 9th grade was the time that I was the only one out of all my friends that new about Marilyn Manson and Korn. In 11th grade is the time when I discovered Morrissey and The cure and all of those people who i' had grown up with since 5th grade who questioned why I listened to Heavy Metal were talking about this new guy Marilyn Manson and this group Korn and I'd new about them 2 yrs before them. Now they all think I'm this big "sissy", because of the music they here me playing in my car or the way i dress. I always ask them why did it take 6 almost 7 yrs for them to listen to the same exact stuff I'd just dumped. They'd say something like well we don't remember that was to long ago. Yeah mmmm hhmmmm. I just tell them come back and say the same thing when you guys get into what I'm listening to now in another 6 or 7 yrs. I graduated in '98 so 2004 it should hit them.

Now do you fellow Pittsburghers understand why I get so damn frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen Boy Racer. Why do you care so much what other people think of the music you listen to? Stop trying to convert everyone to your taste in music, because it just won't happen. There are two kinds of people in this world: those who like Morrissey, and those that don't. Your friends make up the latter. They're probably sick of you shoving it in their face all the time. You're better off just doing your own thing, and not worrying what others think.

By the way...LA is an amazing place that should not be percieved as "dangerous." Anyway, Coachella Valley is more than 2hrs away from it. Sorry you'll be missing out.

...give yourself a break before you break down...

There will be no Moz/Marr reunion. But look they live practically next door to each other in Cheshire and I'm sure they see each other from time to time - maybe down the aisles in Sainsbury's.
The Pet Shop Boys have always said they would like to perform with Moz - how he would feel about this I don't know.

I'm the only person that lives in my town who has a mind of their own and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don;t worry about what people think about me. If I did i would be wearing those big ridiculous jeans everyone likes to wear. If u could see the way i dress u would know that I don't give a damn about other people think about me.
