Michael Stipe mentions Morrissey in Q

Thanks to everyone who alerted me to this item. From Jason Hajdik:

In the latest issue of Q (May), Michael Stipe of R.E.M. answers a list of questions submitted by fans. This was one of them:

Q: Is there any truth in the story that you were penpals with Morrissey and he wrote "Found Found Found" about you?

A: I don't think I know that song. We met three times and he sent me postcards. We went walking in London. He's a really nice guy. The judge in The Smiths court case said he was untrustworthy. Fuckhead.

The interview is transcribed at the R.E.M site http://www.murmurs.com. Thanks to Brian Cohen for the link.

I'm not too surprised by what Michael Stipe had to say about Morrissey. One of the times that Stipe and Morrissey met were in New York City, back in July 13, 1991. There's a picture of them together (Stipe and Morrissey) along with Rickie Lee Jones in a book called Morrissey Shot. It's a great book full of pictures of the band. I highly recommend it, though it may be out of print since I've never seen it anywhere since I got mine.

Damn it! That was (more or less) exactly the question I sent in when Q asked for it! Hell, they promised some 2 Pound 50 or something as a reward. Where is it?

I just wonder..."found found found"...?
I've never heard of that song. where can I find the text? On which album/single does it appears on?

I read somewhere that the song was "Michaelīs bones" instead of "found found found". Does anybody know anything about it ?

I don't know about you guys, but it doesn't sound like Stipe is being truthful. How could he have not heard Found Found Found? One of the times he was with Mozzer was during the Kill Uncle tour. Oh well, just a thought.

I think Michael's Bones is about "the moor murders".

Moz made some comments on this friendship in Q sept 1992 (with the aforementioned picture)which are quite funny and enlightening:
Q: Your relationship with Michael Stipe seemed promising at one stage?
M: Promising?! What did you think we were going to do? Become a Millican and Nesbitt? But, yes. The temperament is the same, the sense of rationale is the same.
Q: Do you thin you'll make music with him?
M:(laughs)I can't think of any reason why! No, the whole joy about the relationship is that music doesn't come into it. We don't ever talk about R.E.M. or whatever it is I do. There are other things to discuss.
Q: How did you actually meet?
M: Well he wrote to me for a long time and I wondered why. I was initially sceptical. I can't remember why. Then I decided that I would like to meet him, so we met and I was surprised that it was so easy and...compatible. It's very nice and, who knows, we may even get a cover on Hello!
Q: Michael and Morrissey invites us to their lovely home!
M: We can but dream.

These are remarks made by Michael Stipe in the Swedish music-magazine Pop(October 1994):
Pop: You and Morrissey are old friends, is that right?
Stipe: Friends is a bit too much said. We sent letters, thatīs all.
Pop: How did it start?
Stipe:I donīt know, really. Iīve read that i was mailbombing him, but that is absolutely not true. Two postcards, thatīs all. Then he answered.
Pop: What were those letters about?
Stipe: Oh, I canīt remember.
Pop:Of course you can.
Stipe: Mainly, it was about litterature. We share some favourites in that area. Weīve stopped mailing now.
Pop: Why?
Stipe: I donīt know. Just happened.
Pop: Heīs going big in the states now, isnīt he?
Stipe: Mmmm, thatīs nice isnīt it?
Pop: Yeah, but rather unexpected too, isnīt it?
Stipe: Why is that?
Pop: Well, i just imagined he was too "Brittish" to reach an American audience.
Stipe: I think thatīs in the margin, basically. If you are really great, like Mozzer, if you have something really important to tell, then youīll eventually reach an audience. No matter what your style of musicīs like.
Pop: What do you think about my picture of you as the American Morrissey, and vice versa?
Stipe(smiling): Isnīt that a bit too much?
Pop: Donīt think so.
Stipe: Hmmm, I can guess why youīre making those comparisons, we might have some common charachteristics. I still think youīre exaggerating, though. For one thing, Iīm not as anti-social like dear old Moz. Not at all(Hah, hah)
