Johnny Marr: ‘A lot of people don’t even want to see The Smiths reform’

I’d like to hear more Electronic but the Smiths’ body of work is complete as it is.

    Dexys Midnight Runners

All of their albums are worth a listen. Don’t Stand Me Down is Kevin’s masterpiece and One Day I’m Going To Soar isn’t far behind. Let The Record Show is patchier but their version of Curragh of Kildare is a work of utterly batshit genius.

    The Operation (2018)

As a Southpaw sceptic, this is my favourite song on my album. If he’d lost the drum intro, he’d’ve had a 3* record on his hands.

    I Starting Something/Suedehead connection

Suedehead sounds to me as though it refers to a one night stand which the narrator has grown to regret-“Still, it was a good lay.”. I Started Something... seems to relate to a more sustained dalliance-not necessarily romantic-which has inspired ambivalence in both parties.

Aye, “It’s not where you’re from, it’s where you’re at.” Especially if you happen to be from Timperley.

Morrissey's Kill Uncle turned 27 last March 4: after all this time what are your opinions on it?

Starts well but the momentum isn’t sustained. There’s enough for a good EP and a few strong B sides, but it’s not much of an album. And I like King Leer.

NME's 15 best albums from Manchester features 3 Smiths albums

At least six of those are by non-Mancunian bands, more if you count Trafford as a separate entity.

What have been your favourite albums of the year?

One of the things I like about Paul Draper’s music is the feeling it provokes that the whole thing’s about to collapse under the weight of its own pretensions. It’s probably not an intended reaction but it’s one of the reasons why I rate this album so highly. Obviously, the killer tunes don’t hurt.

What have been your favourite albums of the year?

That’s a great interview, with RD coming across almost exactly as I expected him to, and a timely reminder that I need to explore more of his stuff. Thanks for sharing it.

Biggest problem with Low In High School?

Mostly, I like the music-in fact, I’d say it’s probably his third or fourth best solo album. His voice is better than ever and there are some terrific arrangements on here. The lyrics aren’t top drawer Morrissey but I don’t think they're shockingly bad or even appreciably worse than anything...

Most stupid lie about Low in High School from the reviews

Maybe it’s the sweet corn in my ears, but I’m not hearing it. On closer listening, there is what sounds like a flugelhorn in the background, but it’s so subtle as to be almost unnoticeable. To be honest, I suspect Moz just laid it on as, good vegan that he is, he wanted some entertainment for...

Most stupid lie about Low in High School from the reviews

Not a lie as such but if you read most of the reviews without checking the ratings, you’d think they were talking about a four star album (fwiw I’d give ***, now I’ve had time to digest it and the peaks and troughs have coalesced into a homogeneous whole). It does feel as though they liked the...
