Miserable Lie
Alistair Fitchett ponders The Smiths and remembers Sophie and Peter Johnston

Excerpt:
...Strangeways Here We Come was a terribly empty record, a flaccid piece of irrelevance that seemed to capture the end of the group perfectly. It can be argued that Morrissey achieved something of a reprise with his Viva Hate solo debut, complete with the unarguably delightful 'Everyday is like Sunday' and of course Vini Reilly on guitar, but it's a moot point, because from there it was certainly a dramatic nose-dive. Except it seems in the USA where he simply rose to greater popularity on the back of a variety of postures and poses that in the UK merely cemented his image as the worst kind of Nationalist Englishman Abroad imaginable.

"Morrissey U.K. Singles Get Boxed" (Billboard.com, July 26, 2001) speaks about the release of the second boxed set. It is good to see that Morrissey can still garner the attention of major US music publications and be the subject of a "front page" article.

Today i received the cable magazine TV7 (previously ON7), on page 7 it has an article dedicated to UK Horizons week long hommage to pop music for the last century. What caught my eye was the mention of "Young guns- go for it!" The article, which I later found to be inaccurate mentions a 2 day salute to the 80's during which Young Guns would feature Culture Club and the Human league. I delved into this further by calling the station and found that five episodes would be shown over the two days.

Monday 6th August
9pm-10pm: Boy George & Culture Club
Tuesday 7th August
9-9.30pm: Human League
9.30-10pm: THE SMITHS
10.30: Bananarama

UK Horizons is available on Sky, ITV digital and cable.

leedoggpimp writes: A televison movie of the 50's icon James Dean will air on Aug. 5 at 8 pm. As most of you may already know Morrissey is a fan of James Dean and is featured in his video "Suedehead".

Tibby also writes: I thought this might be of interest to you Morrissey/James Dean fans out there like me. On August 5 at 8:00p.m ET/PT an original TNT movie called "James Dean" (of course) about the actor James Dean premieres. An actor named James Franco portrays James Dean in this film. You might have caught little glimpses of this forthcoming movie on TNT as they have showed a few previews.
