In the Friday Review section of the British daily newspaper The Guardian there is an article about the Morrissey/Smiths nights at The Star and Garter. A full page picture of Morrissey appears above the heading "We love Morrissey - a night at The Smiths disco."

DJ Dave Haslam tells of his experience at the Star and Garter and talks to Dave Cotrill, the one man disco behind the evening. Haslam also talks to a few of the people in attendance. The full article can be found at:

"A tale of two disc jockeys" by Dave Haslam - The Guardian (Sept. 21)

The next Smiths/Morrissey night at the Star and Garter is on Oct. 5...

Dave (who DJs the night), also writes: "...The text is taken from a new book about DJ culture. The article makes The Star & Garter sound like the seediest place on earth, it's not that bad is it?"
---
Journalist who lies also writes: There's a patronising account of a Smiths/Morrissey club night in today's Guardian, taken from a book on 'superstar DJs'. The author seems to think it's hilarious that young people like the Smiths, and that the DJ is just a normal bloke.

  • I did find the article a little patronising towards Morrissey's fans and the DJ but perhaps this is understandable when the author has worked with Fat Boy Slim and other "trendy" DJs.

I do think he was quite surprised that Morrissey can still attract a younger audience considering his lack of output in recent years, it's a pity that he didn't really express his admiration for Moz and his fans a little more.

Interestingly, he ends the article by saying that he returned to the Star and Garter around the time of Morrissey's birthday and he is now on the mailing list. I think the guy was semi-impressed with the evening but afraid to admit it - what would people think!

  • Well come on, not only is it in a seedy area, it's a bit of a red light area & I only know that because it's always fairly late when we leave the place & there are 'Ladies of the night' hanging about outside.
If you've been inside you'll also be able to varify it's hardly the Ritz, still I'll be there on the next Moz night.
    Because I love the place

  • Though having been to many, i would question his comments 'not many present would have seen The Smiths'. There are many of us 'oldies' attending who did see them.
Get to the next one 5th October - if you aint been, you are in for a treat!!

  • was what I thought of this article. people like dave haslam don't understand the joy that people have of singing along to their favourite song. the truly uplifting feeling when a fresh, original lyric is sung over a great piece of music; something that dance music simply cannot match.

all the criticisms he levelled at the morrissey night (it's effectively just a juke box) would have applied to any non-dance music night club where people go along to jump up and down, and sing along to their favourite song.

he criticised 'dave' or at least expressed surprise that there weren't any other styles of music. what in the lord's name do you expect when you go along to a evening billed as a morrissey/smiths night? what an absolute flipping idiot!

  • I dj'ed three Smiths nights in Leeds around 5 years ago, I'd love to do it again but there is a lack of venues who would be willing to put a night on. There is a night called "Strangeways" but they play far far far too much Belle and Sebastian for my liking. If anyone has any ideas or knows any venues in w. yorkshire do drop me a line.
