* (To put this in context, this review appeared immediately AFTER a long and rather negative review of Oasis’s new album.)*

Received wisdom is that another Manchester-Irish icon blew it long ago, but even on half-power, Morrissey still has more than enough individuality to make his solo records worth more than a cursory listen.

Maladjusted (Island) contains the usual mix of the sublime (‘Wide To Receive’, ‘Ammunition’, ‘Trouble Loves Me’ and ‘Papa Jack’) and the occasionally ridiculous (a song about a window cleaner called, gulp, ‘Roy’s Keen’), and even if it seems clear that he’s withdrawn completely into his own world, it’s worth remembering that it’s a world he created for himself.

Noel Gallagher, take note.
