Jemma Pixie Hixon covers "Asleep"

Jemma Pixie Hixon- Asleep- The Smiths-Cover

Performed as powerful and gentle as ever. Who would have believed it. A beautiful cover all and all.

That cooze knows as much about loneliness as a monkey does about quantum physics.

...or not. Apparently she's agoraphobic and hasn't left her house in 3 years. I suspect most people could never imagine the level of loneliness which results from a condition like that - but who cares, huh? She's got fake hair and part of her bra is visible, so she must be fair game. So stupid.

A very moving rendition. Jemma, a beautiful young women imprisoned in her house with agoraphobia for 3+years, fails to find reassurance from millions of besotted fans on the Internet.

Her voice is measured and balanced, the glamour of her appearance failing to signal the claustrophobia of her daily life. I hope Jemma rises above her illness and one day makes it to a real stage.

Cher Lloyd, the local pop star made good, must be very perplexed by Jemma's ascent. I can't imagine Cher handling a subtle song with restraint.

regards
BrummieBoy

ps: skylarker..you just put your foot in your mouth.

?? This girl has suffered with agoraphobia since she was 6 and she's been completely housebound for over 3 years, she is a prisoner in her own home and brain, completely cut off from the world the only contact being through the internet and putting videos on youtube, she can't even have friends over in here home due to her anxiety so if thats not loneliness i dont know what is!

If being housebound for over 3 years with agoraphobia isn't loneliness what is @Skylarker you don't have any idea what this girl deal with every day!

Wow. That was a beautiful cover...

I am sorry, but I still don't think anyone can do this song justice. Perhaps it is because this song meant so much to me in my younger days.

She is not bad, and I give her credit. However, I am not too fond of covers--probably because I am so narrow minded!

I don't know - doesn't she over-egg the pudding a bit i.e. the relentless emoting in the film clip and vocally ?

Of course , I'm biased ; I can't help but compare it to the original. The flat, resigned tone to Morrissey's voice in the Smiths version always seemed to me to be the appeal of the song.

Still , given she's been stuck in a house for years ...

Nothing beats the original, of course. I see what you're saying and agree. She's only emulating what she's seen on television - the puppy pout and low cut top. I think she's brave and has a pretty voice. I mean, It must be very difficult to go through something like that and still try to face the world...singing.

This is one of my favorite Smiths songs and it's nice to hear a different spin, I suppose. Wish he'd add this to the set list, but I'm not sure how it would go live. Or how Morrissey even feels about this song these days.

I can really see him singing it live, with nothing but a piano accompanying him, it would be perfect.

I love the original for its simplicity, but covers are meant to be a bit different, plus she has a lovely voice, so all in all, thumbs up.

Very sad about her condition - but not a fan of the song. I really am a harsh judge when it comes to covers of Smiths/Moz songs ... there is just something about the way Morrissey's voice is so unique, maybe it's the accent, I'm not sure ... but I struggle with anyone else's interpretations of the songs he sings. There's a handful I like, but that's it. As for this one here, it just seems overproduced and his voice is hidden behind reverb/echo and production tricks ... it doesn't sound natural.
But hey, more power to her, I hope she continues getting help to get over her condition.

To use a cliche instead of actually thinking, this cover is not my cup of tea. The agoraphobia is sad story though. But as I have stated before elsewhere, I truly do not like hearing Morrissey's words coming out of anyone else's mouth. It just sounds wrong to me.

hmmmn....when he emerged didn't Morrissey take an awful lot of flack for 'relentless emoting in film and vocally'? Doesn't he still?
She's young, she's beautiful and she's troubled. Moz is obsessed with beautiful historic female 'pop' singers. On her FB page an admirer writes:

' I love The Smiths, nice cover! Morrissey would be proud!!!'
Jemma Pixie Hixon 'I do hope so haha :) x'

She covered 'Asleep' as her Dad's a big Smiths/Moz admirer.
I hope she develops as a songwriter even if the agoraphobia stymies her as a performer. I've 'a dog in this race' as I had severe agoraphbia after being a victim of violent crime. It's no joke, folks. Moz was borderline agoraphobic in Kings Road. I'm sure he'd be intrigued by Jemma's biography. In an earlier 'anonymous' comment I seemed to 'shade' Cher Lloyd. Didn't mean to, ain't a hater! Another troubled local lass who's #8 in the US charts this week. It's interesting to live in a town with 2 emerging Divas.....

ps: After several requests, I'm back as BrummieBoy after a 5 year hiatus. 'Wayne Clooney' has now retired. I have all the Troll Bingo Cards i ever need, so won't be rising to any flame wars: hilarious as they were 'back in the day'. We're all going to play nice from now on, right?

Hope Moz has another creative surge and hope his obsession with a dying record industry model doesn't poison his prospects. 'Art Hounds' suggests there's still great days ahead.

Why was my "cooze" comment deleted?

Anyway, agoraphobia? Boo-hoo. Not even a real disease. Oh, she hates to go outside and enter the real world and be around people? Tough. Me too. Still gotta work and pay bills. Deal with it, honey.

I see a sheltered, pretentious little twat.

Blimey! Harsh.

I call BS. This looney broad has obviously left her home to see a plastic surgeon.

Well, this song isn't meant to be sung "powerful and gentle" and all. Just listen to the lyrics and Morrissey's voice and you'll understand.
