Alternatives to Morrissey

For those who can't listen to Morrissey and the Smiths every day of their lives (I tried), here are three alternatives every Moz fan should investigate:

Jeff Buckley: The greatest voice ever in music, a legend even though he died (drowning accident)after completing only one album ("Grace").

T. Rex: the melodies of two of T. Rex's songs - "Ride a White Swan" and "Metal Guru" - were shamelessly plagiarized by the Smiths ("Panic" from "Metal Guru") and Morrissey ("Certain People I Know" from "Ride a White Swan"). T. Rex's leader, Marc Bolan, was killed in a car accidient in 1977. If you've never heard T. Rex's music, be prepared for a shock: Bolan sounds like an elf. Nonetheless, the music is very interesting, and Bolan was one of Morrissey's early heroes.

Tom Verlaine: The former leader of punk group "Television," Verlaine saved his best work for his solo years in the 80's. Check out "Dreamtime" if you can find it (trust me...it won't be in your local record store). Don't bother buying any "Television" records; Verlaine's voice is highly annoying in those early days.

Final note: "The Shelia Divine" do not sound like the Smiths; they were overhyped and highly dissapointing. George Michael does not deserve to use the same restroom as Morrissey, so there is no longer any need to compare them.

You can't listen to the smiths everyday??
I certaintly can. I can also listen to the cure constantly but thats me...

Thanks for the recommendations. Didn't morrissey cover t. rex too?
I've heard two of their songs from the film "velvet goldmine" and have planned to check them out for awhile and never have. I defeintly will now!

I would strongly recommend Television's debut album
"Marquee Moon"....an excellent record.

Re: Any alternatives that AREN'T dead?

Shameless plug for one of my favourite recent albums (if two years is recent)... Rufus Wainwright. He almost beat Morrissey out a few weeks for living in my stereo.

Re: Alternatives to Leatherface Moz

I indulge myself by listening to those Japanese Commercial Jingles..oh the substance in those "new-new-new airline crunch" or "tomoki, so great great, great, wild wild, yes yes yes" songs have more emotion than Leatherfaced Moz releasing another umpteenth best of album.

Jack off ass, at least Boz is doing other things.

...yes, you are dumb.

True, The Sheila Divine don't sound much like Moz at all. But they DO make for a good show (i just saw them a few nights ago).

And I must agree with PunchDrunk, Tindersticks is a must.

He completed two albums in my opinion. I listen to "My Sweetheart the Drunk", and I think to myself 'that album was finished!' He must've wanted to sound like Seal if he expected more studio time.

He would've been a legend.

T. Rex was revolutionary, but only two of the albums were good, and the rest of their catalog is crap.

Television was excellent.

Not true. The Smiths comparisions aren't accurate, yes, but TSD is a great band. Sadly, they end up in the same bin as The Ocean Blue and The Mighty Lemon Drops, but their better than most of that bunch.
