Foals: "Morrissey Is A Bit Of A Dick" - Xfm

Foals have claimed that they think Morrissey is "a bit of a dick" after the former Smiths frontman went to one of their shows... and left after three songs.

Speaking to Xfm at the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize in London last night (September 7), keyboard player Edwin Congreave explained that the star had been spotted at Camden's Electric Ballroom earlier this year.

"We were told about an hour before that he was on the guestlist, and I was astonished. I was a teen fan of The Smiths, as a lot of people are, I kind of idolised them.

"And Morrissey is obviously famous for being a bit of a dick, for want of a better word. I was excited he was coming to our show and I wanted to know what he thought of us. And, true to form, he left after about three songs.

"So I think he told us what he thinks of us. And that's absolutely fine. We're not The Smiths and never will be."

I think they said it nicely. Foals were clearly excited Morrissey was on the guestlist, but were then disappointed when he left. Clearly Foals are nothing like the Smiths, everybody knows that! But for some reason Morrissey seems to be favouring some very bland indie bands, The Courteeners, Boyfriends, The Ordinary Boys, etc. Most of these bands have already gone (OB, Dead 60's)! Mozza seems to be keeping his finger on the pulse by checking out new bands every now and then. In fact, he has always championed and "name dropped" a few smallish indie bands in the past, such as The Primitives and Echobelly.
Somehow I don't think he is too impressed with the current offerings or the current collapsed state of the record industry! Perhaps not good times for Morrissey at the mo?

  • They don't know why Morrissey left the gig early, it may have had nothing to do with whether he liked the music or not. Maybe he felt ill, or someone was bothering him, or he suddenly remembered he left the oven on.

they just aren't very good. Or perhaps he had to go home and wash his hair.

They say they're fine with him walking out, but then they say Morrissey is famous for being 'a bit of a dick'. It's a statement showing that they were rather upset by him leaving. They also say they're not like The Smiths, but that doesn't matter to Morrissey, he's into lots of music that sounds most unlike anything The Smiths ever did.

Yes, Morrissey's famously difficult to get along with, but so are a lot of people in the public eye.

The very fact that people put themselves out there for the judgement, or adoration of strangers means they often have issues with ordinary social interaction and they resolve this with 'fame'. It doesn't necessarily make them 'dicks', it's all part of life.

In my (all too limited) experience most people fall into two socially comfortable categories - those who can enter a room full of strangers and fall easily into conversation with one, or several people there, or those who can stand up before a room full of strangers and sing a song / perform a play / recite a poem etc. Put those latter people into a one on one conversation and they go to pieces, likewise, stand the former people up to do a presentation at a conference and they become a gibbering wreck.

Morrissey is not a dick, he's painfully shy when it comes to ordinary social interaction. When he's on stage, or in interview (using his public persona) he's (almost) fine.

    The Foals are talking horseshit.

  • What has any of this to do with the fact they don't sound like the Smiths? Why should Morrissey only go and see them because they sound like the Smiths?

  • If Morrissey's in the venue and spotted, he's
    about to leave

From that moment people just focus on him rather than the band, a rush to the VIP loung, or guest list part

They must be happy, that he could manage to watch

  • -Agree? That's probably one of the reasons he went to the show.

Who knows... maybe he decided after 3 songs that he liked them, or that he didn't.

    BTW, who are Foals?

If Morrissey left after hearing just one of my songs, I would still be a happy camper
If Mozzer left after listening to half of my song
Ill feelings I would not pamper

    He may have felt sick
He may have had an epiphany
