The Smiths reunite for 3 million pounds and 12 concerts
As Thierry Roland said one famous night in July 1998, “on can die happy after this!” The news was announced via fax laconically addressed to the NME, signed by the hand of Morrissey, in his capital-letter writing, so characteristically: “JOHNNY AND ME HAVE DECIDED TO REFORM THE BAND. THAT’S OFFICIAL. ENJOY THE NEWS. MORRISSEY”. No mention of the group but everyone knew who was hiding behind “The Band”, he was evidently restless about the most improbable reunion of all reunions: that of the mythical English group, The Smiths, separated since 1986, and whose members, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce especially (the ‘honni’? drummer), who had turned around that there are some years crossing their leaders (Morrissey and Marr) for their claim for legal proceedings for the rights of their songs.
A little bit after the receipt of this fax the editors of NME, a news production of the Concertlive society, signed by Johnny Marr, Morrissey and Andy Rourke confirmed the news. The Smiths should reunite, without their original drummer, disgraced, but with their bassist, for a series of concerts which should start with the first date in Manchester in June 2010. The whispered rumours of a possible appearance of the reunited group for the summer festivals and for headlining Glastonbury. According to the rumour, the group has accepted more than 3 million pounds for this reunion, for a series of 12 dates. Any tours outside of the British Isles had not been discussed. No more new songs at this point have been assumed. Concertlive’s representative stated precisely that the auditions will take place soon to engage a new drummer and a second guitarist. One remembers their last American tour, the quartet hired a second guitarist to relieve Johnny Marr of certain guitar parts and to fill out the sound of the group.
This reunion comes as a bit surprising since Marr appeared to have joined the young group The Cribs and Morrissey had come to a close of a painful gigantic tour. The last had discovered some health troubles and was without a record company. What remains of The Smiths after that? One cannot say but he is not sulking in pleasure: after Pavement was in Paris in May, the return of The Smiths marks the collapse of the last bastion of resistants to reunions, at the same time the zenith of a massive movement of 80’s revival."
