Hello
A friend of mine, working at the (main) national TV station passed me this link today where an excerpt from a Smiths performance & interview was shown back in 1983 or 1984 on a show called 'Generation 80'.

I had never seen it before anywhere else on the web so i thought this might interest other old Moz fans around.

  • to see Johnny being surprised that the playback already starts... Nice footage, but why does it stop right in the middle?

  • On a scale of 1 to 10 how beautiful does Morrissey look on this video?

  • I am 36 years-old and a devout Smiths/Morrissey fan (since age 12)--

But why is so much footage from bands in the 1980s lip-synced? It seems that TV programs preferred this type of "filming"-- why?

The Smiths were a powerful live band. This footage is filled with intrigue--I love it.

As one commenter already stated, Marr looks surprised when the music starts.

    Nevertheless... I love it!

    Truly,
    Ken

If I'm not mistaken, it was shot before The Smiths' gig at Breekend Festival in Bree (22 april 1984). The gig is sometimes, erroneously, referred to as "Brecon". God only knows why - though I doubt even that. There's a good description of that gig on Stephane Daigle's wondersite.

Taped for RTBF, the French TV&radio station, presented by Fabienne Vande Meersche.

I never saw it on tv though - perhaps due to the too obvious "false start" - it's a fake surprise you read on Johnny's face; and the fact that hardly anybody had heard of The Smiths in those rotten belgian days.

To my knowledge, there were only 2 letters to a (Flemish) fanzine of that time, reporting back about the 1984 gig.

    And more I cannot say.

It appears to have been aired on 19/12/1983 (so says the website, if it's correct). However, I doubt this was actually shot in Belgium - and certainly not on that date (19/12/1983). Since Fabienne also mentions that it's their 2nd single (TCM), it must have been in 1983; since in Jan 1984 they already followed up with What difference does it make.

      cheers!

  • A man walked into a library and asked for a book on palindromes.

The librarian replied, "Yes Sir!" and under hushed breath "..romp, and I kidnap Morrissey."

Off topic I know, but interesting, i thought.

  • Johnny looks cool as f^ck and love the way he whips his strumming hand in an arc in the old days. Sigh. I can see why this is rare though, between the solemn leaf floating majestically in Moz's fantastic pomp and the song's start off-cue, it was a total mishap- but the unpolished footage is the most interesting of all.
