MESSAGE FROM MORRISSEY.

The slapdash release of Morrissey live at the Hollywood Bowl is done by Warner without any consultation to me whatsoever, and is in breach of their terms as laid out by themselves in an agreement made for the film between Warner and my ex-manager. Being Warner, predictably the sleeve art is appalling. It is the work of cash-hounds, and I urge people NOT to buy it. I am not signed to Warner, and no royalties from this dvd will come to me. Please spend your money elsewhere. thank you, MORRISSEY.

But the dilemma is whether to buy it or not. I'd hate to cross the Mozster, but I'd love to see the film.

  • Dearest Morrissey,

Seems you have all the right reasons to demand a boycot. you are totally clear.

    But..

I simply love your music and concerts, which means I follow you arround the globe to enjoy the Morrissey experience. unfortunately I have a job, and a mortgage so can't travel all year, so every now and then I watch dvd's like 'Who put the M in Manchfester' on a big screen, with the volume on ten. To satisfy my Morrissey gig needs.

Warner is simply giving us what we want. You. In order to make your boycot succesfull I suggest you bring out another recent, with equal quality setlist, live show on dvd. Otherwise the Hollywood dvd is like the forbidden fruit with no alternatives at hand. Just too tempty.

    Cheers

  • Moz just hates the cover cos his wrist is limp on it. It's not a bad cover, way better than 'M in Manchester'. Moz seems obsessed with royalties, how much money does he need? I respect his wishes to have a say in the release of a dvd, but it always seems to come down to money with him. Has he done a concert for charity in recent years? There are kids dying every day of starvation and abuse and all he can bleat about are fucking royalties. I'm getting sick of all the complaining about judges and court and royalties. Now that I'm complaining myself, what other artist charges full whack for a concert ticket and then plays for maybe an hour and 10 minutes? Now that's a scam.

I totally understand your view on this DVD and can empathise with your annoyance over the DVD and it's being released against your contractual agreement, but you have to understand something... I am an addict. I am addicted to your music.

I couldn't afford to fly to America to follow you there and, while I missed you during your epic American tour, I didn't begrudge the Yanks their time with you. But I have to have this DVD you see, because I want to see the show.

Equally, I want to respect your wishes, so what I am proposing is this...

    1. Select an alternative cover shot and make your selection known via true-to-you. I will then download the image and make a new cover as per your instructions.

    2. Work out what you think the royalties from one DVD should be and let us know, again via TTY. I will then send a cheque via your record company.

Thus, both you and I get what we want from this DVD debacle.

It's the best I can offer, I have to have the DVD.

    Sorry.

    Forgive me?

Fair enough he doesn't like the release of this DVD, he's entitled to express his views. But bringing royalties into it portayed him as a very selfish, money obsessed person, something I thought Morrissey was the opposite of. If he'd said he doesn't agree with the release, that he's got nothing to do with it, he doesn't like it, then fair play. But mentioning royalties just makes him look like yet another crashing bore!
I think the old Morrissey's dead. He doesn't seem to give a damn about anything now except earning more and more money. Its sad. So I'm going to buy the DVD, firstly because it looks great and I need to feed my Morrissey addiction like everybody else, but also because of what he said. I think we should all go out and buy it in droves, try to make it a high-selling Morrissey item and try to knock some sense back into old Mozza, maybe he'll wake up to see the kind of person he has become, or is becoming.

Let them make their money back I say.

It's the same thing we had when EMI re-issued Hulmerist on DVD and Morrissey called for fans to boycott it - Morrissey doesn't give a flying shit about quality of product, all he cares about is whether he makes any cash from it.

In the future I predict very few remaining studio albums, as Morrissey flirts with then burns off every remining record company who might be interested in him. He's already rich by most peoples standards, yet it seems all he cares about is money.

This isn't early Smiths work - this is him as a solo artist. Far less commercially successful artists seem to have way more control over what gets released whereas time and again shoddy stuff is apparently released without his permission. Someone must read his contracts - he's signed enough of them.

You see the problem? Its always about money now. Why? I can remember the days when you had principles (yes, principles remember them?) and you stuck two fingers up to the establishment, both the political and music types. Now you're just becoming another part of the system. You used to be an outsider, speaking for the underdog! Now, well you're just a part of a whole big system aimed at making more money. Why?

Morrissey, I love you. God you saved my life with your music. I used to adore you (I still do, I think). But you're undoing it all now! Why? You're above money surely? You knew where you came from, you've known how this life can wear you down, nobodies saying you don't deserve money from the music you create but don't you see its now becoming all about the money? This isn't what you stood for was it? Its not the person you wanted to be! Please, please, please take a walk back into reality and realise that this is not the way forward, this is not the way you want to be living your life.
