Morrissey to Release New York Dolls CD and DVD - Filter Magazine, Sep. 9, 2004

The much-awaited performance by the New York Dolls at the 2004 Meltdown Festival in London will be captured in all its glory with both a CD and DVD, titled Morrissey Presents the Return of the New York Dolls: Live from Royal Festival Hall 2004. The equally iconoclastic Morrissey took great pains to arrange the festival lineup around the punk architects and the performance itself did not disappoint. Feature tunes included “Looking for a Kiss,” “Jet Boy,” and “Trash.” The show was also the final appearance for bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane, who passed away shortly thereafter due to cancer. The CD covers all the tracks highlighted in the set, while the DVD includes all kinds of bonus footage, including band interviews and rehearsals.

  • A Christmas single?

I think from a blasphemy point of view, Christians would have a valid case in objecting to this.

Jesus is the only man ever to be without sin. The suggestion that he he has something to be forgiven for is clearly provocative.

And all this from a good Catholic boy.

The band have performed it superbly during the current tour, and as far as I could see it's destined to be a fan's favourite.

  • Pretty boring and obvious comment I`m afraid but I agree with above commentators that "I Like You" would be a better single; either that or Daddy's Voice (though I prefer the former.) I think ILY (abbreviations again!) is a cracking song and one of the overlooked highlights of the album, pretty damn groovy and dancey too. In fact its probably his most "dancey" song since Barbarism Begins At Home! The lyrics are pretty great too. People who don`t know shit from treacle have called them banal. This is a very poinient, touching and humorous exploration of a deeply misanthropic individual who has finally found someone they can get along with, something close to both Morrissey and many of his fan's hearts (and nothing whatosever to do with "moaning about court cases" as the nay-sayers have it.)

"Jesus" is quite a good song with dramatic moments but the tune overall is slightly leaden, and that "I was a good kid...." line is a bit too trite. I don`t think it will do well.

while id rather see 'I Like You' or even 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores' released asa single rather than '...Jesus' idont really care so much as long as we recieve as many original studio b-sides as possible. be thankful or at very least be quiet.

I do hope "I Have Forgiven Jesus" isn't his Christmas single for his Maladjusted follow-up! I remember in 1997, he announced "Satan Rejected My Soul" as his Christmas single and played it on TFI Friday. • I'm glad this one has been picked. It's funny, I started off hating this tune but now it's "First Of The Gang To Die" that I really despise. And for the life of me I can't understand why everyone thinks it's so bloody marvellous. My eyes roll into the back of my head whenever I hear it. It's the sonic equivalent, in terms of excitement, of opening a drawer. Lyrically I suppose it's a pleasant enough little tale, but the effect is rather like hearing some relative you've never heard of has to have an operation- you don't really care. Musically, it's Your-Arsenal-Period-Morrissey-By-Numbers.

Even so, it beats 'Chip Shop' Jamelia and any of the offerings from her forthcoming album: Open or Wrapped?

Anyway, I do like "Jesus" now- but it took a while. Good job on the releasing such an obviously Blasphemous single around the time of Kristian Konsumerfest as well...

And then have it as an bonus track on limited edition versions of the albums, attracting new fans to the album, while we can all just buy the single. Good for us, and Moz makes loads of cash! Genius, no?!

Now quit all your bitching and just be happy that there are yet more Morrissey songs coming soon! What an unappreciative lot you are!

  • 1. I can't stand the song itself.

    2. It's not a single anyway.

    3. A better choice would be "I Like You", even though the studio version of that doesn't equal its live potential.

    4. Better still would be "Don't Mkae Fun...", though a double A-side with an album track would be nice.

    5. The only reason for putting out "Jesus" in December is to grab some cheap controversy/press coverage by hoping some religious idiots condemn it (see also: "Ouija Board", released at Hallowe'en 1989)

    6. In my opinion that track should never have made the album at all, and should have been dumped as a b-side at some point. The whole comeback has been a complete mess as far as tracklistings go, with dull and lame songs put on the album and genuine gems chucked away on b-sides.

i know its contraversial but i think Morrissey should do a completely new song, and just PRETEND its on the album. the song he should do is "kill uncle"

    the lyrics are:

Oooh uncle, i've got a present for you
and it's not the kind you probably want
Oooh uncle, when pepole mention you
it makes me want to hit you with something blunt

and even though freud was almost right
(as i said to mother in bed last night)
its you not daddy that i want to fight
because you want to take her away
    (away-ahay-hay-hay)

    and i just

    Want to kill you uncle,
take your pick from all my kitchen knives
Oh I want to kill you uncle
don't you know its wrong to have two wives?

Oh you may think i'm just haveing some fun
but i've been wanting to do this since nineteen ninety one
so meet me on the front lawn when you've finally done
with your cup of tea and your vile iced bun

oh i just want what's naturally mine
i just want what's rightfuly mine

and even though freud was almost right
as i said to mother in bed last night
its you not daddy that i want to fight
because you want to take her away

    etc etc repeat to fade.

I dont know what he was thinking of (which proves freud was right i supose) but i think he should give it a go. i think it could be my favourite Morrissey song, and i hope it will be in your 'top five' or at least 'top ten'.

    best wishes josh.
