I was pleased to read in the latest 'New Yorker' magazine that Jonathan Franzen, the Oprah-embattled author and winner of the National Book Award for fiction for his novel 'The Corrections', made mention of our most beloved quartet of the 80's.

In his article entitled 'Meet Me in St. Louis', while describing the producer of the segment that he was filming for his supposed appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, he says of the producer: "He's[Chris the cameraman] wearing jeans and a corduroy shirt; he looks as if he'd listened to the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd in his youth. Gregg, for his part, seems like a person to whom The Smiths and New Order were important."

It's always nice to see the boys still popping up in our culture and remaining such a monumental band. In Jay McInerny's "Model Behavior", several Bret Easton Ellis novels and now in Franzen's article. Plus too many others to mention. The Smiths seem to be a favorite among authors. Cheers to all!

  • And, for all those early years when others scoffed at anyone who adored The Smiths...here's mud in yer eye! Back in 1985, '86 the only time I felt I was with kindred souls was at a Smiths concert, where we could all proudly unite in our common admiration of The Smiths. The rest of the time we found ourselves around people who thought The Smiths had no merit and that we didn't know what real music was about...but time has shown how many lives were deeply affected by The Smiths, many lives from ALL WALKS OF LIFE. Yes, here's mud in their eye!
