Boz Shines Brightly at the Blue Comet

Boz Boorer was truly on fire tonight. He played the Blue Comet in lovely Glenside, PA, just minutes from Philly. The Blue Comet is one of the preeminent rockabilly venues on the East Coast, attracting great talent and a devoted crowd. Two weeks ago, with a power outage, the bands hopped up on the bar and played "unplugged" by the light of dozens of votive candles. This place, these people rock! Sunday night is usually the big night at the Blue Comet, but tonight's show, organized by Mr. Brian Setzer himself, drew in a full house.

Boz opened the night, playing alone on the Blue Comet's small stage. Tonight was the first night that I'd heard him sing live and I was duly impressed. Boz is looking and sounding great. He's got a solid set of pipes with great range, even throwing in some vibrato and vocal change-ups with the ease of a natural-born singer. (And he's got that classic rockabilly curl of the lip down pat.) Having seen him so many times as a supporting player, it was so cool to see and hear him take command of the stage and the crowd. He wears the role well.

He stuck to a mostly rockabilly set, with just a couple of covers thrown in. I heard he played some Morrissey tunes at the NYC show on Friday, but we heard none tonight. It would have been cool, I suppose, but honestly, I wouldn't have changed a thing about tonight. It was so much fun- the music was great, the crowd was great, Boz was having fun and he took us right along with him. Here's the setlist, though, in the words of Boz himself, "not necessarily in this order". (It's pretty darn close, though, thanks to Boz and Tom.)

- Jeepster (T. Rex) -Boz mentioned how they were a great influence in his youth.
- John, I'm Only Dancing (Bowie) -anyone who knows me knows I was freaking out for this one!
- Rockabilly Guy
- Jitterbop Baby
- Shakem' Up Rock
- Slippin' In
- Barkin' Up the Wrong Tree- Boz's howls for this one were dead on. Go Boz!
- Riverside Jump
- Crash the Party
- Save Me a Stool at the Bar- a song Boz wrote for a good friend who passed on too early. Great song.
- Rockabilly Boogie
- Gotta Travel On
- Too Many Nights in a Roadhouse
- Doctor Jazz- a great song bearing fingerprints of both Brian Setzer and Kirsty MacColl

The Hudson Dusters took the stage next. Hailing from New York City, these guys really got the place hopping. I was surprised not to see a stand-up bass on the stage with them for most of their first set. "Chopper" eventually joined them, taking his stance high atop the bar. (Have I mentioned this place gets crazy?!) Boz joined the guys for a few more songs, really belting out some great vocals and playing a fierce guitar. He even nailed a song he said he'd never sung before! The place went nuts. I danced my head off. It was just one of those nights that I wish I could bottle. The music was just spot on and the band transported us all to a wonderful higher plane. I can't wait for tomorrow! Enjoy the pics!

Cheers,
