I have mentioned before that I am cutting down on Johnny Marr mentions unless there is something directly related to Morrissey, but I am still receiving lots of submissions. Please direct Johnny Marr news to those sites focused on him and do not be offended if your item is not posted here. It is apparent that neither one wants to be continually associated with the other.

neil g writes: Hi there. Johnny Marr was interviewed in Friday (2nd November)'s 'Metro' (free paper in London + other British cities). Final question was:

  • Sad to say, but there will also be no more mentions of Alam. It is obvious that Alam and Morrissey no longer want to be associated with each other.

Diddy: Would you consider stalking Moz again?
Alam: Julian Casablancas is the best songwriter out there, why would I stalk anyone else?

So, once again... my deepest regrets, but you will no longer hear articles on Alam. :*(

  • Dave,

I am sorry to hear that there won't be much more Marr news here. Especially since there is no preponderance of note worthy Morrissey news to entertain us. I imagine if given a choice between Marr news and no Marr news, the vast majority would rather have the option of reading the guitarist gossip. Marr and Morrissey may not want there names connected, but frankly it’s too late for that.

For years I have listened to all these off hand remarks during interviews, about one and the other. Watched them feign disgust that people are still interested in their previous collaborator. Every time I think, "will you please grow the fuck up".

Steve, John, listen up. The Smiths is what it is: your greatest accomplishment. Don't be surprised when people want to focus on it. When either of you create a comparable "Queen is Dead", an equal to, "I Know its Over" or "Draize Train", then and only then will people be a little more balanced, and concentrate less on the past. Its 15 years and lets face it we are all still waiting.

Get over yourself, cut out all the "no, I haven’t heard his album and frankly don't want to" crap. Grow up, you share a history and unless you can offer some good reason for the mutual disgust, you might well recognize that your legacy depends on one another. Maybe to you this public bickering seems like a defense of your artistic integrity, but to me it seems like way too much ego with no product to back it up. Its childish and its silly and honestly we deserve better.

So if you want to drop Marr news, because there is good alternative (there isn’t, jmarr.com is down for months), or because your wrists ache, or because of Ramadan or any other of million reasons. Then go ahead, god speed and god bless. BUT if its to fit into the childish warped logic of our dear Marr and Morrissey, I wouldn’t bother, cause IMO they are off base on this one. Let them start their own website, where they can pretend the other one doesn’t exist and that Last Ride and Last of the International Playboys are the reason they are pop stars.

Anyway I got your back no matter what you do –

    • Smiths, I appreciate your comments, you have definitely thought more about the subject than I have.

This is not a new decision though, it is a reminder to those submitting Marr items. I appreciate all contributions, but I do feel a bit guilty when someone spends an hour typing out an interview and I have to reject it because it has absolutely nothing to do with Morrissey.

One of the things mentioned, the idea that there is no alternative, tells me either that 1) no one is that interested or 2) the coverage here is just enough so no alternative is necessary. Personally, I am less and less interested in what Marr is up as time goes on so my coverage will naturally reflect that, and that is not necessarily fair to Marr or his fans. It shouldn't be my responsibility to keep up to date on Marr news even if there is no alternative.

You have brought up some good points though.

This is your website. It is called *morrissey*-solo.com. You can do whatever you want with it.

Actually, I'm more interested in what Moz does than in Marr's projects (which have often been rather disappointing, IMO). But the amount of news which is naturally generated about Marr is much much smaller than that relating to Morrissey. It seems a pity to operate a policy of excluding what little news there is about Marr when
    - it doesn't take up that much space; and
    - there really isn't much of an alternative

  • I have to agree with David here. The fact is that Marr wants pretty much nothing to do with Morrissey. Although I like both of them, I find pretty much no reason why Marr should be getting publicity on a *Morrissey* site (and vice versa)...

What I would say, to anybody concerned with any Marr topic, is to create a Johnny Marr club on Yahoo. This way, you'll be able to post up things about what's happening with Marr, without the distraction of it being on an irrelevent (read: Moz-solo) site.

Hope to have been of some assistance!

  • "How much coverage should Johnny Marr have on this site?"

It's fine as it is now - 50%
More Johnny Marr coverage - 21%

  • It's a bit dissapointing that no more marr news will be appearing on this site. I think many people who come to this site are smiths as well as moz fans, so wouldn't mind knowing about both on one site. if this was a website run by morrissey, i'd understand, but i was under the impression that its a site made so that fans can keep updated and contribute news items etc. it seems odd to suddenly stop covering marr because the two don't wanna be associated...they will forever be associated because they were in the smiths together, and many people consider the smiths to be on of the greatest bands of our "generation". hmmm...maybe someone should start a smithsandmorrissey-solo site and then we could have the best of both! :)

anyway, just want to say, that regardless, this site is excellent and one i rely on to find out the latest news, so thank you very much david! :)

  • Davidt,
I agree with your decision to eliminate Johnny Marr stuff from this site because the primary concern of this site IS Mozzer's solo career. Frankly, I'm not really interested in the ex-Smiths careers even though I've been a fan for over 15 years. Someone who is concerned with what Marr is doing at this point should either start a site for him or go to the many sites out there already dedicated to his work. We have no time for him here...try this for starters...http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~draize/

Personally, if the story dosen't have anything to do with Moz I don't read it anyway. So, after all that, I support your decision David, and thank you for your dedication to this site and to Moz ...you do it for the fans and most of us really appreciate it!

  • Does Johnny Marr actually have his own branch of fans? I was just thinking about that as I was saying that Marr news should be posted on Marr-devoted sites...

I'm pretty sure that all people that are even slightly interested in Marr's career are interested in Morrissey as well. I don't know anybody that likes Marr without liking his accomplice, SPM.

One thing, David - do you think you could, maybe, redirect any Marr news to a separate site? For example, if somebody does (foolishly) post you a story about something that Marr's done, would there be any chance of a small description, with a link to somewhere else? I know this may cause some unnecessary (and perhaps unwanted) work, but it'd possibly work as a solution to all those that regularly visit Moz-solo.com that still want Marr info...

    Just a thought...

  • I think this is a good decision. They're not working together, so why should I find news on Johnny Marr on this site? I never read anything about Stephen Street or Vini Reilly.

  • Although I understand your basic point David and as its your site you can develop it as you choose, I do think it's interesting that even a debate about whether Marr news should be on here or not has already had 30 or so responses.

The only reason I submitted the thing was that if something happens or is published in Manchester, no matter how minor or insignificant it is, unless someone from here submits it then no-one else will ever get to decide whether it was insignificant or not. Similarly, if Mozza stubs his toe in LA and no-one submits the story then how can I sit here and think "So What"? I for one have never thought "why does David post these things?" Unless of course if the Marr story knocks "Mozz tour announced" off the site.

  • of the smiths. Quite frankly i find what David said about not putting stuff up about johnny marr very ridiculous! i mean the old mozzer is just a guy, i beleive that most morrissey fans are smiths fans and vice-versa and are interested in new of the other three smiths. Also i mean the smiths werent just about the very femaleesque voice i mean. geez give the other three guys a chance. christine Adicted

  • For me, the Smiths was the most fertile and essential of the British music scene. It defined a lot of people in Britians lives at that time. Marr was an integral part of that with Morrissey..

I respect both, and it seems a shame that you have decided to take Marr out of the equation.

I suppose this Marr censure also goes for any Andy rourke, Mike Joyce and Craig Gannon articles..

I personally think you should leave things as they are.. but I recognise that it's your playing field here.. but remember that we are but the players.. and that without each other this site would be worthless.

I was there with the Smiths.. and I don't like to lose any part of that myth. I need to cling to something..

Maybe you should maybe take a poll in it..

I think Davidt is right, and I'm glad he will stop posting about Johnny because the Johnny bashing is just trite and hurtful to some of us.
