In yesterday's newspaper EL MUNDO (Sept 14), in their Friday magazine, Bernard Sumner is interviewed and when they ask him why New Order are back he answers: "I never understood why Johnny Marr refused to perform live with Electronic. As time went by I started to get bored of having an only studio band. I think the only way to check if your music works is to play it before an audience and see their reaction... Johnny used to sit in the studio and spend hours talking about music. It was unbearable. In New Order we never do that, we just get to work."

  • Johnny Marr is a dignified man. I completely understand why he wouldn't want to share the stage with Sumner.
I've seen footage of Bernard on stage before. Not only does he sing off key, but he insists on doing the 'white man over-bite' and trips over stage cords and fellow band mates! He's dangerously stupid on stage and Marr knows this.

  • Should we take this to mean that Electronic is no more? Certainly a shame, if so, the last album is rather good.

  • There was a massive interview (forgot where -- Uncut, maybe) with B & J circa their last record; the article made it seem as though Bernie & Johnny were the best of pals. In light of that piece B's remarks sound kinda' harsh.

Whatever the case, all their music sounded WAY too processed and premeditated to these ears. Also, I genuinely do not understand the appeal of Bernie Sumner as a writer and performer. I'm not being sarcastic. I'll happily read any explanations.

  • Yes, sitting in the studio and just talking about music MUST be way more appealing than playing with Bernie on stage. Or maybe it's that vile Morrissey's influence - y'know - just talking about something instead of actually doing it :-)

  • I thought Johnny was always a studio guy anyway.

  • Their best song was with Neil Tenant anyways and that is one of the most remarkable songs ever!!!! Regular Electronic songs are ok at best.

  • Whatever about Sumner's comments re Johnny Marr, a New Order record was long overdue. Electronic's last album sounded tired and over-produced. New Order's Get Ready sounds fresh and vibrant and Crystal is an excellent single. Studio or live, Electronic just didn't sound that good so I'm not surprised Sumner ran back to who he knows best. Sad as it might sound, I just wish Johnny would do the same and maybe another winning combo could give us something to look forward to. However, that'll probably be talked about ad infinitum without anything being done about it either.

Even though I thought it was physically impossible, this both sucks and blows.
  • Things must have massively changed with Bernard, because as any New Order fan knows....he has been notoriously against touring for the longest time himself (hence so few New Order tours, especially U.S. ones!), which honestly leads me to doubt this story. Though I could be wrong...

  • bernie sumner is hilarious. i mean, who talks trash about johnny marr? only bernie sumner could get away with that crap. the guy's so funny. i mean, the way he sings is so affected and he's just so funny. i gotta see him live. too bad marr doesn't wanna play live, though, that's everyone's loss. maybe bernie and moz'll get together for a few numbers. that'd be some monkey business.
