"I found this review in the Guardian (A British national Newspaper) today whilst I was on the Tube on the way to work. I didnt get to go to the gig myself but wish that I had."

The Cure vs. The Smiths -The Tribute Wars:

"This Weekend I was CURED by a man in red Lippy, then visually assaulted by a man holding flowers and wearing a rather nice cardigan". Along with six hundred other thirty somethings I found myself crammed into a dark basement below the world famous World's End Pub, In Camden Town North London. We were here to witness the climax of a fued held since the early 1980's between arguably 2 of Britain's biggest ever rock acts. The Smiths and The Cure.

Represented by in The Blue corner for The Smiths; All the way from LA USA "The Delicate Young Hooligans" & in The Red Corner For The Cure on thier home turf "The Cureheads". The tribute scene in England has been rife with awful Abba & Beatles tributes for years now, sparked off no doubt by the awful ITV Karaoke challenge; " Stars in Their Eyes" which sees Derick The Dyslexic Digger Driver put away his builder's crack for half an hour to truly believe that he looks and sounds exactly like Pavarotti to the applause of 200 pensioners who have been promised the autograph of that nice man Mathew Kelly if they behave themselves & clap in all the right places.

Tonight is definately different. The Cure although still hugely popular & active in Europe & The States, have faded somewhat in popularity in The U.K. over the last few years. This is echoed several times when I ask different people why they are here to spend money to see a tribute to a band that has not yet officially ended. "You maybe get to see the Cure in England once every 5 years. Even then they never seem to put the same effort into it as they do abroad", is the shouted answer I get from Simon a Plasterer who has travelled from Northampton in The Cure T-Shirt that he informs me is over 15 years old. "It's better than staying in and waiting for The Cure to come around and play. These guys (The Cureheads) are good too & they have a laugh", is Jenny's reason for travelling from Cambridge tonight. Not misled in the least by the fact that their heroes have seemingly desserted them The Cure fans seem to heavily out number the Smiths fans 2-1.

The atmosphere is building as we watch the sets of two other tributes to Gary Numan & The Essex boys Depeche Mode. After another hour and 3 more beers I am begining to enjoy myself and actually am quite excited when The Lights dim & Through the smoke I see a Ghostly Apparition of what really does appear to be; The Cure forming. The crowd push forward as the first heavy bass notes of a song I've never heard before pull me forward too. Then a song I recognise from The Cure's Last album Bloodflowers. Now I can compare.

The Hooligans have travelled from LA for tonight, which begin's their first UK tour. When their Morrissey man runs on and showers the crowd with Daffs & Gladioli they are in the palm of his hands till the end of the set, only breifly interrupted by a staged theatrical fight between Morrissey & The Cureheads vocalist which ended with the whole audience onstage for a drunken rendition of "Midnight" & The Cure & The Smiths arm in arm. So are tribute bands a good thing or a bad thing? I dont know. I'll leave it for you to decide. I was too busy enjoying myself to check.

Bryan Forbes"

  • where is the proof that Cure fans outnumber Smith fans 2-1?

Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me...
  • (For those that might me interested.. this is what I posted on the message board.. a 'review' of sorts)

Well.. It was interesting to say the least on Sat night. It would be easy to slate them.. but in the SATH's defence, the singer 'Jose' made it clear that they were performing not to replace or attempt to be Morrissey or the Smiths, but simply to play the songs as fans because they love his music.. I spent about 15 minutes with Jose at the bar (he had anecdotes about meeting Alain, Boz, and Morrissey which was interesting).. Jose was about 5'10, had a 'Vauxhall and I' period jacket on and a shirt.. But it is a bit difficult believing him to be a Morrissey 'lookalike' when, let's face it, Jose is Mexican American for a start, and OK, he has the hairstyle and the sideburns.. but that's where the similarity ends for me.. He's far too healthy, young and swathy to be the man himself!! He said something in one of his stories about Morrissey saying to him once when they met 'It's like looking in the mirror'.. and I had to smirk a bit, it would be stretching the imagination.. The rest of the band were nothing like the Smiths in look.. but..

As for the music though.. I thought they did quite well.. It was great to hear 'Barbarism Begins at Home' live.. even if it was a cover.. and to the SATH credit, they did try and avoid some of the more obvious songs to do.. As you know, there is a huge reservoir to choose from and they played the following (plus a load more I can't recall, too much drink I am afraid), but from memory, London was the opener, then in no particular order 'suedehead', 'Still Ill', 'Hairdresser on Fire' (I enjoyed this one a lot, 'You might be depressed, but you're remarkably dressed'....), 'Everyday is like Sunday' (great), Bigmouth, Ask (well done the American student girl for stealing the singers shirt and leading the stage invasion towards the end) and a heart stoppingly lovely and emotional 'I know It's Over'.. They also did 'Hand In Glove', 'Girlfriend', and 'Sing Your Life', 'What Difference' (the birthplace of my obsession along with H-Devil), 'There is a Light..' as well..

I had a laugh.. but we were very drunk (and la la la la interesting.. spaced out) I must say.. but if you ever have a chance to have a look, then go out of curiosity for sure.. it won't change your life, but that's not their agenda.. just go along and have a laugh..

..but another from Moz solo.. another voice, I believe 'Taste OF Honey' says about the same gig..

    "..THEY WERE TERRIBLE!!!

I'm sorry, musically I thought they were ok but come on people, don't kid yourself, there is only one Morrissey, and this guy Jose does not dance like Morrissey, look like Morrissey (he's Mexican for goodness sake - and from America!!!) or sing like Morrissey. He can sing, but not like Morrissey. It was a disappointment to see them last night. I thought it might bring back some of that old feeling I miss so much, but alas, no such luck. Infact, it just reminded me how far away we are from those most exciting few years in the 80's.."

Which is obviously judging them far too harshly I think, given my comments..

PS, and the obert Smith lookalike was a bit overweight to my eyes!!

PPS,And David t (other) remember me at the bar!!?

  • Just to add my two-pennys-worth on SATH - I went to see them at The Charlotte in Leicester on Sunday night. Although I unfortunately never saw The Smiths live, I have to say that SATH were absolutely excellent, both musically and in Jose's vocals - uncannily similar to the real thing!

They covered a wide range of songs from The Smiths and Morrissey's solo career and, although I had been waiting for nearly six months for this gig, it was not in the slightest bit disappointing - I would recommend any fan go and see them if you get the opportunity.

I also had the opportunity to chat with Dave (Johnny Marr) and Jeff (Craig Gannon) both before and after the gig - really friendly guys!

All in all, a superb night - I just wish I could now see the real thing!

  • I love both The Cure and The Smiths there only one of a few bands that have lived on since the Eighties there will always be that rivalry there but I'm more of a Smiths fan myself.
